This study was performed to assess the pharmacokinetics of morphine and its major metabolites after its rectal or colostomal administration in rectal-resected (ROP) or colostoma-constructed (SOP) rabbits, respectively. Pregabalin is widely used for treatment of neuropathic pain and is only approved for oral use. This is the first reported case of using pregabalin by the rectal route for treatment in a 70-year-old patient with chronic neuropathic pain and complete intestinal failure. UNLABELLED: Ileorectal anastomosis (IRA) is a possible surgical treatment for hyperacute and drug-unresponsive forms of ulcerative colitis (UC). UC relapses in the rectal remnant usually are prevented by chronic administration of 5-aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA) in topical formulations. The relationships between intestinal absorption and pattern of luminal spread of 5-ASA enemas are still unknown in patients with IRA. We correlated the absorption of a 5-ASA enema with its spread in the distal bowel of patients with IRA as assessed by 99mTc radioenema imaging.

An individual who has cystic fibrosis (CF) may suffer from gastrointestinal problems related to inadequately controlled intestinal absorption secondary to the pancreatic insufficiency. Two cases in which dermal absorption of promethazine hydrochloride resulted in a toxic neurologic syndrome are reported. The symptoms included central nervous system depression, acute excitomotor manifestations, ataxia and visual hallucinations. In addition, peripheral anticholinergic effects occurred. These symptoms are comparable with those of oral, intramuscular and rectal overdose of promethazine. The demonstrated risks of the topical use of promethazine outweigh any benefits.

Many surgical methods have been described for the treatment of full-thickness rectal prolapse. Rarely, unusually large lengths of colon must be excised, thus resulting in a significant loss of the absorptive function of the remaining colon. We present an unusual case in which an extraordinary length of the colon was excised and a perineal reservoir was created in the form of a colonic J-pouch to improve continence.

Plasma levels of diazepam and N-desmethyldiazepam were investigated in 19 children by a gas chromatographic method permitting the use of capillary sample. Intravenous administration was studied in 3 children and the plasma level curves showed a rapid decline during the first hour. Malassimilation is usually confirmed with oral glucose or D-xylose absorption tests, whereas the oral lactose tolerance test can be used to evaluate lactase deficiency in foals. The effects of presentation of hyperosmotic solutions of sodium salicylate to the closed and perfused rectal loop preparations commonly used in assessing drug absorption have been compared. Epithelial cell loss was quantified in control and treated loops. Tissue damage was significantly greater (P less than 0.01) in treated perfused loops. Fluid efflux, which was associated with a small but significant change in the haematocrit value, was noted in both systems.

The value of positron emission tomography (PET) and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging in differentiating recurrent rectal cancer and scar was investigated. PET with fluorine-18 2-fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose (FDG) and MR imaging were performed in 15 patients with suspected recurrence.
