Isolated absence of the Moro reflex in a baby with CHARGE syndrome could reflect vestibular abnormalities.

We describe a term baby girl with (CHARGE syndrome coloboma, heart anomaly, choanal atresia, retardation, and genital and ear anomalies association) who had persistent complete absence of the Moro reflex but preservation of other primary neonatal reflexes. A computed tomography scan revealed bilateral absence of the semicircular canals and hypoplastic vestibules. We suggest that isolated absence of the Moro reflex may reflect underlying abnormalities of the vestibular system and may, therefore, not necessarily be associated with a generalized disturbance of the central nervous system as is usu

Differences of blink-reflex abnormalities in patients suffering from idiopathic and symptomatic trigeminal neuralgia.

We investigated the brainstem blink reflex in patients suffering from idiopathic and symptomatic trigeminal neuralgia to establish possible dysfunction in the reflex cycle and determine eventual differences between the two disease types. The study included 35 patients with idiopathic disease and seven patients with symptomatic disease, their results compared with those of 50 normal controls. We stimulated the forehead afferents of the supraorbital nerve and recorded the response from both orbicularis oculi muscles. We tested latencies of bilateral late components (R2, R2'), irritative R3 compo

Abnormalities of the acoustic startle reflex and reaction time in gilles de la tourette syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: To study the startle reflex and the effect of the startle reflex stimulus over reaction time (start-react effect) in Gilles de la Tourette syndrome (GTS). METHOD: Ten GTS patients and ten matched healthy volunteers underwent a simple RT paradigm (4 blocks of 50 trials). Forty acoustic startle reflex stimuli (110 dB) were randomly delivered with a 20% occurrence probability and presented unexpectedly at the same time as the imperative stimuli of the RT. Variables of interest were: amplitude, onset latency, degree of spread and rate of habituation of the startle response, and RT and

Visual oculomotor abnormalities and vestibulo‑ocular reflex dynamics in polyglutamine spinocerebellar ataxias (Review).

Spinocerebellar ataxias (SCAs) are a group of autosomal dominant neurodegenerative diseases that are characterized by cerebellar ataxia. The most common types of SCAs are caused by polyglutamine (polyQ)-encoding cytosine-adenine-guanine repeat expansions. Autosomal dominant SCAs share similar pathophysiological mechanisms. The cerebellum plays an important role in the generation and control of eye movement, and neuropathological findings indicate that cerebellar degeneration is commonly present in polyQ-SCAs. As a result, various patterns of oculomotor impairment are present in most SCA subtyp

Exercise Pressor Reflex Contributes to the Cardiovascular Abnormalities Characterizing: Hypertensive Humans During Exercise.

We investigated the impact of hypertension on circulatory responses to exercise and the role of the exercise pressor reflex in determining the cardiovascular abnormalities characterizing patients with hypertension. After a 7-day drug washout, 8 hypertensive (mean arterial pressure [MAP] 130±4 mm Hg; 65±3 years) and 8 normotensive (MAP 117±2 mm Hg; 65±2 years) individuals performed single-leg knee-extensor exercise (7 W, 15 W, 50%, 80%-Wpeak) under control conditions and with lumbar intrathecal fentanyl impairing feedback from µ-opioid receptor-sensitive leg muscle afferents. Autonomic Reflex Screen Test Abnormalities in Cold-Induced Sweating Syndrome Type 1.

Cold-induced sweating syndrome (CISS) is a rare autosomal recessive disease due to mutation in the Cytokine receptor-like factor 1 (CRLF1). The characteristic symptom of CISS is the tendency to sweat profusely especially in the upper body and hands when the patient is exposed to cold temperature. We sought to first report the findings of autonomic reflex screen in a case of CISS type 1 with Cytokine receptor-like factor 1 mutation. Valsalva morphology, Valsalva ratio, and heart rate response to deep breathing were normal for the patient's age. Quantitative sudomotor axon reflex test showed non

Morphological abnormalities of the recto-anal inhibitory reflex reflects symptom pattern in neurogenic bowel.

BACKGROUND: Bowel dysfunction amongst multiple sclerosis (MS) and spinal cord injury (SCI) patients often manifests as fecal incontinence (FI) or constipation, but the pathophysiology is poorly understood. Anorectal physiology provides an objective assessment of lower bowel functions and is increasingly being used in clinical practice. AIM: The purpose of this study was to correlate symptoms of bowel dysfunction in patients with spinal cord disease with findings in anorectal physiology. We hypothesized that specific abnormalities will correlate with symptoms: prolonged recto-anal inhibitory r

Abnormal H-reflexes in periodic limb movement disorder; impact on understanding the pathophysiology of the disorder.

OBJECTIVE: To get more insight in the pathophysiological basis of periodic limb movement disorder (PLMD) with or without restless legs syndrome (RLS), we investigated whether these patients have spontaneous changes in H-reflexes or show altered reflex patterns after (external) inhibition or excitation of the relevant spinal segment. METHODS: The ratio of the peak-to-peak values of the maximal soleus H-reflex and the maximal direct muscle potential (H/M ratio), H-reflex recruitment curves, vibratory inhibition and recovery curves of the soleus H-reflex in double stimulus experiments were measu

Testing the vestibular-ocular reflexes: abnormalities of the otolith contribution in patients with neuro-otological disease.

Conventional vestibular rotation testing with the head centered on the axis stimulates the semicircular canals evoking compensatory eye movements. If the head is placed forwards of the axis in an eccentric position the otoliths are also stimulated by a tangential linear acceleration acting laterally to the skull. In normal subjects the additional otolithic stimulus evokes compensatory eye movements with a higher gain than with head centred, particularly for high frequency (greater than 0.1 Hz) stimuli. The responses with head centred and eccentric in various patients with known/suspected neuro

Abnormal quantitative sudomotor axon reflex test results in patients with tinnitus as a possible indicator of small fiber neuropathy.

A few cases of small fiber neuropathy (SFN) and tinnitus (TN) associated with coronavirus disease 2019 have been reported. However, the relationship between SFN and TN has not been studied. This study investigated a possible relationship between SFN and patients with TN (PwTNs) using autonomic function tests (AFTs) including quantitative sudomotor axon reflex tests (QSART). We performed QSARTs and other AFTs such as the Sympathetic skin response (SSR), Valsalva ratio (VR), and heart rate variability (HRV). The QSART results, obtained at seven hospitals using same protocols, were compared betwe

Abnormal development of biceps brachii phasic stretch reflex and persistence of short latency heteronymous reflexes from biceps to triceps brachii in spastic cerebral palsy.

Co-contraction of antagonist muscles is characteristic of spasticity arising from perinatal brain damage but not in spasticity occurring after brain damage in adulthood. Such co-contraction is a normal feature of early post-natal motor development. Heteronymous, monosynaptic Group Ia projections from biceps brachii to both the antagonist triceps brachii and to other synergist and non-synergist muscles of the upper limb occur in the newborn baby and become restricted during the first 4 years to motor neurons of primarily synergistic muscles. Longitudinal and cross-sectional studies have been pe

Prolonged asystole induced by trigeminocardiac reflex accompanied with abnormal heart rate variability during percutaneous balloon compression: a case report.

Trigeminocardiac reflex (TCR) can result in bradycardia and even cardiac arrest, and is reversible with elimination of the stimulus. Here, we report the case of a 68-year-old man who experienced cardiac arrest during percutaneous balloon compression for the treatment of trigeminal neuralgia. In this patient, sinus rhythm did not recover after stimulation removal, causing us to successfully perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). The patient regained a sinus rhythm and was pretreated with atropine 0.5 mg, allowing the operation to be started again. The operation was completed successfully

Frequency and longitudinal course of autonomic reflex testing abnormalities in isolated REM sleep behavior disorder.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Autonomic dysfunction is common across the α-synucleinopathies including isolated RBD (iRBD); however, the presence, severity, and distribution of autonomic dysfunction as a risk factor for phenoconversion in iRBD remains unclear. We aimed to characterize autonomic reflex testing (ART) abnormalities in a cohort of participants with iRBD and assess them as phenoconversion biomarkers. METHODS: We performed ART on 45 individuals with iRBD and evaluated the ability of ART components (sympathetic cholinergic, cardiovagal, and sympathetic adrenergic) to predict phenoconversion usi

Brief report: HIV-exposed newborns show inferior orienting and abnormal reflexes on the Brazelton Scale.

Assessed 48 infants of HIV-positive and HIV-negative mothers on the Brazelton Neonatal Behavioral Assessment Scale. Infants exposed to HIV-positive mothers were disadvantaged from birth due to their mothers having obstetric complications and to the infants having orienting problems and abnormal reflexes on the Brazelton Newborn Scale. These problems may be early precursors of the later visual-spatial delays and hypertonicity noted in these infants.

Abnormality of circulatory reflex and aldosterone response during head-up tilting in patients with primary aldosteronism.

Abnormality of the circulatory reflexes has been reported in patients with primary aldosteronism. However, changes in blood pressure, heart rate, plasma renin activity (PRA), and plasma aldosterone concentration (PAC) after head-up tilting in primary aldosteronism have not yet been reported. Seven patients with primary aldosteronism were tilted to a 65 degree head-up position which was maintained for 30 min. Systolic blood pressure decreased significantly 5 min after tilting and remained at this level during the period of tilting. Diastolic blood pressure did not change during the tilting. Hea
