Co-contraction of antagonist muscles is characteristic of spasticity arising from perinatal brain damage but not in spasticity occurring after brain damage in adulthood. Such co-contraction is a normal feature of early post-natal motor development. Heteronymous, monosynaptic Group Ia projections from biceps brachii to both the antagonist triceps brachii and to other synergist and non-synergist muscles of the upper limb occur in the newborn baby and become restricted during the first 4 years to motor neurons of primarily synergistic muscles. Longitudinal and cross-sectional studies have been pe

Oxaliplatin (OX) chemotherapy can lead to long-term sensorimotor impairments in cancer survivors. The impairments are often thought to be caused by OX-induced progressive degeneration of sensory afferents known as length-dependent dying-back sensory neuropathy. However, recent preclinical work has identified functional defects in the encoding of muscle proprioceptors and in motoneuron firing. These functional defects in the proprioceptive sensorimotor circuitry could readily impair muscle stretch reflexes, a fundamental building block of motor coordination. Given that muscle proprioceptors are

The clinical scales used for the evaluation of the spasticity have some drawbacks, in spite of their simplicity and ease of assessment, and their inter- and intra-rater reliability remains controversial. The aim of this study is to develop a portable system for the objective and reliable evaluation of the spasticity based on the K-means clustering of the tonic stretch reflex threshold (TSRT) and to compare the discrimination performance of the level of spasticity determined by our method with that by the conventional modified Ashworth scale (MAS). Fifteen hemiplegic patients (7 males and 8 fem

Imposed static hip stretches substantially modulate the soleus H-reflex in people with an intact or injured spinal cord while stretch of the hip flexors affect the walking pattern in lower vertebrates and humans. The aim of this study was to assess the effects of dynamic hip stretches on the soleus H-reflex in supine spinal cord injured (SCI) subjects. Sinusoidal movements were imposed on the right hip joint at 0.2 Hz by a Biodex system. H-reflexes from the soleus muscle were recorded as the leg moved in flexion or extension. Stimuli were sent only once in every hip movement cycle that each la

The differential nature of the modulation of excitatory inputs from various cardiovascular receptor groups by pulmonary stretch afferents, driven by lung inflation, and the central inspiratory neuronal activity, has been demonstrated. At levels of activity of pulmonary stretch afferents and of central inspiratory drive that almost completely suppress the bradycardia of stimulation of the carotid bodies, the response to stimulation of the arterial baroreceptors and cardiac C fibre endings was reduced by 30-58%. In contrast, the bradycardia evoked by pulmonary C fibre stimulation was not signifi

BackgroundAfter a central nervous system lesion, the ability to control muscle activation and relaxation in specific joint ranges may be impaired. The underlying mechanism of this sensorimotor impairment is related to a decreased ability to regulate the tonic stretch reflex threshold (TSRT) through descending and peripheral control processes. In dynamics, the reflex threshold and its velocity-sensitivity (μ) describe how movement in specific upper limb (UL) joint ranges is impaired after stroke.ObjectiveTo examine the relationships between measures of elbow flexor impairment using TSRT and μ,

BACKGROUND: Spasticity and rigidity are serious complications associated with spinal traumatic or ischemic injury. Clinical studies show that tizanidine (Tiz) is an effective antispasticity agent; however, the mechanism of this effect is still not clear. Tiz binds not only to α2-adrenoreceptors (AR) but also to imidazoline (I) receptors. Both receptor systems (AR+I) are present in the spinal cord interneurons and α-motoneurons. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the therapeutic potency of systematically or spinally (intrathecally [IT]) delivered Tiz on stretch reflex activity (SRA) i

Levator palpebrae superioris muscle (LPSM) and facial muscles comprise fast-twitch fibers (FTFs) and slow-twitch fibers (STFs) but lack muscle spindles required to contract STFs reflexively. Voluntary contractions and microsaccades of FTFs in LPSM stretch mechanoreceptors in superior tarsal muscle (STM) to induce phasic contractions of STFs in LPSM and frontalis muscle via mesencephalic trigeminal nucleus (MTN). They also induce prolonged contractions of STFs in bilateral frontalis and orbital orbicularis oculi muscles and physiological arousal via MTN and rostral locus coeruleus (LC). We hypo

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal, multisystem neurodegenerative disease that causes the death of motoneurons (MNs) progressively and eventually leads to paralysis. In contrast, delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) is defined as delayed onset soreness, muscle stiffness, loss of force-generating capacity, reduced joint range of motion, and decreased proprioceptive function. Sensory deficits and impaired proprioception are common symptoms of both ALS and DOMS, as impairment at the proprioceptive sensory terminals in the muscle spindle is theorized to occur in both. The important cli

OBJECTIVE: To identify the role of hyperexcitable short-latency stretch reflexes (SLRs) on balance control in people with hereditary spastic paraplegia (PwHSP).
METHODS: Sixteen PwHSP with triceps surae spasticity and 9 healthy control subjects were subjected to toes-up support-surface perturbations. EMG data were recorded from gastrocnemius, soleus and tibialis anterior. Furthermore, center-of-mass trajectories were recorded.
RESULTS: PwHSP were less able to withstand the perturbations. Triceps surae SLRs (40-80 ms post perturbation) in PwHSP were increased compared to healthy subjects. Fur

Spastic movement disorder is characterized by reduced ability to selectively activate muscles with significant co-activation of antagonist muscles. It has traditionally been thought that hyperexcitable stretch reflexes have a central role in the pathophysiology and the clinical manifestations of the disorder. Here we argue that the main functional challenges for persons with spastic movement disorder are related to contractures, paresis, weak muscles and inappropriate central motor commands, whereas hyperexcitable reflexes play no or only an insignificant functional role. Co-activation of anta

OBJECTIVE: The mixed orbicularis oculi muscle lacks an intramuscular proprioceptive system such as muscle spindles, to induce reflex contraction of its slow-twitch fibers. We evaluated whether the mechanoreceptors in Müller's muscle function as extrinsic mechanoreceptors to induce reflex contraction of the slow-twitch fibers of the orbicularis oculi in addition to those of the levator and frontalis muscles.
METHODS: We evaluated in patients with aponeurosis-disinserted blepharoptosis whether strong stretching of the mechanoreceptors in Müller's muscle from upgaze with unilateral lid load indu

The aim of this study was to describe five patients with cerebellar ataxia, neuropathy and vestibular areflexia syndrome (CANVAS) with chronic cough and preserved limb muscle stretch reflexes. All five patients were in the seventh decade of age, their gait imbalance having been initiated in the fifth decade. In four patients cough antedated gait imbalance between 15 and 29 years; cough was spasmodic and triggered by variable factors. Established clinical picture included severe hypopallesthesia predominating in the lower limbs with postural imbalance, and variable degree of cerebellar axial an

To maintain eyelid opening and arousal without proprioceptive or visual fading, microsaccades of fast-twitch fibers (FTFs) in the levator palpebrae superioris muscle (LPSM) and the global layer of the superior rectus muscle (GLSRM) continually stretch mechanoreceptors in the superior tarsal muscle (STM). This stretch generates proprioceptive signals that induce reflex contractions of LPSM slow-twitch fibers (STFs) and regulate arousal via the mesencephalic trigeminal nucleus (MTN) and locus coeruleus (LC). Concurrently, counteracting microsaccades of FTFs in the global layer of the inferior re

STUDY DESIGN: The effects of electrical stimulation of the sciatic nerve on background electromyographic and static stretch reflex activity of the trunk muscles were studied.
OBJECTIVES: To verify the hypotheses that sciatic scoliosis is induced reflexively by radiculopathic pain, and that scoliosis might be maintained by prolonged asymmetric alteration of the trunk muscle tonus caused by central sensitization of the spinal neurons that constitute the postural reflex pathways.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Sciatic scoliosis usually occurs with convexity to the side of the herniated disc. The n

STUDY DESIGN: The effect of noxious electrical stimulation of the peroneal nerve on the stretch reflex electromyogram activity of the hamstring muscle (semitendinous) was studied.
OBJECTIVE: To verify the following hypothetical mechanisms underlying tight hamstrings in lumbar disc herniation: stretch reflex muscle activity of hamstrings is increased by painful inputs from an injured spinal nerve root and the increased stretch reflex muscle activity is maintained by central sensitization.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: It is reported that stretch reflex activity of the trunk muscles is induced b

The levator palpebrae superioris muscle (LPSM) and facial muscles comprise both fast-twitch fibers (FTFs) and slow-twitch fibers (STFs). Still, they lack the muscle spindles to induce reflex contractions of STFs. Because reflex contractions of STFs in the LPSM and frontalis muscle, which are the major eyelid opening muscles, are induced by stretching of mechanoreceptors in the superior tarsal muscle, those in the palpebral orbicularis oculi muscle (POOM), which is the major eyelid closing muscle, should not be induced by stretching of the same proprioceptors but instead induced by the proprioc
