[The effect of glycerol on regional cerebral blood flow, blood volume and oxygen metabolism].

Using positron emission tomography with 15O-labelled CO2 O2 and CO gases, the effects of glycerol on regional cerebral blood flow (CBF), blood volume (CBV) and oxygen metabolism (CMRO2) were investigated in 6 patients with meningioma accompanying peritumoral brain edema. The same study was done in 5 normal volunteers. The changes of blood gases, hematocrit and hemoglobin were also examined. After a drip infusion of glycerol, the regional CBF increased not only in the peritumoral cortex and white matter but also in the intact cortex and white matter on the contralateral side. The increase of CB

Elevated regional cerebral blood flow in adults with 22q11.2 deletion syndrome.

OBJECTIVES: Recurrent chromosome 22q11.2 deletions cause 22q11 deletion syndrome (22q11DS), a multisystem disorder associated with high rates of schizophrenia. Neuroanatomical changes on brain MRI have been reported in relation to 22q11DS. However, to date no 22q11DS neuroimaging studies have examined cerebral blood flow (CBF). This exploratory case-control study seeks to identify differences in regional cerebral blood flow between 22q11DS subjects and controls, and their association with psychotic symptoms. METHODS: This study of 23 adults used arterial spin labelling MRI to investigate voxe

Decreased regional cerebral blood flow in patients with diphenylarsinic acid intoxication.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Diphenylarsinic acid (DPAA) intoxication caused by drinking contaminated well water was found in Kamisu, Japan. The symptoms indicated cerebellar-brainstem and temporo-occipital involvement. However, it remains unclear how it affects the human brain. To elucidate the effect of DPAA on the human brain, we analyzed cerebral blood flow (CBF) data after the drinking of DPAA-contaminated water was stopped and investigated the correlation between DPAA exposure level and CBF by single-photon emission computed tomography (CBF-SPECT). METHODS: The DPAA-exposed inhabitants (n =

Effects of pacing rates on global and regional myocardial blood flow.

BACKGROUND: Information is scarce on the effects of right ventricular apical (RVA) pacing on regional and global myocardial blood flow (MBF). The purpose of this study was to assess the relationship between pacing rate and both regional and global MBF. METHODS: Four patients with exclusive atrial pacing and six patients with exclusive RVA pacing underwent three consecutive H(2) (15)O positron emission tomography scans at 60, 90, and 130 pulses per minute (ppm). For each pacing rate, regional and global MBF was determined. In all patients, the left ventricular (LV) function was normal. RESULT

Correlation between anosognosia and regional cerebral blood flow in Alzheimer's disease.

The purpose of this study was to determine the brain regions associated with anosognosia in Alzheimer's disease (AD). Anosognosia for memory disturbance was assessed in 29 probable AD patients, based on the discrepancy between questionnaire scores of the patients and their caregivers. In I-123-IMP single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT), a significant association was found between anosognosia and decreased perfusion in the orbitofrontal cortex, using regression analysis. This result is consistent with the previous studies that have reported an association between frontal dysfunction

Regional cerebral blood flow during gastric balloon distention in functional dyspepsia.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Hypersensitivity to proximal gastric distention as a result of abnormal central nervous system processing of visceral stimuli is a possible pathophysiologic mechanism in functional dyspepsia (FD). Increasing evidence suggests involvement of both lateral and medial pain systems in normal visceral sensitivity and aberrant brain activation patterns in visceral hypersensitivity. We hypothesized that there is involvement of aberrant brain activation in FD with hypersensitivity to gastric distention. Our aim was to investigate regional cerebral blood flow during painful proximal g

Regional cerebral blood flow in a patient with Nasu-Hakola disease.

We report a functional neuroimaging study of a 43-year-old woman with Nasu-Hakola disease (NHD). Regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) images were measured with technetium-99m ethyl cysteinate dimer single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT). rCBF was decreased in the bilateral frontal lobes and thalamus. This finding was consistent with the known underlying neuropathology in patients with NHD. Brain SPECT is useful for demonstrating the pathophysiologic brain region in patients with NHD.

Regional cerebral blood flow in Parkinson disease with nonpsychotic visual hallucinations.

BACKGROUND: Patients with Parkinson disease (PD) often experience visual hallucinations (VH) with retained insight (nonpsychotic) but the precise mechanism remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: To clarify which neural substrates participate in nonpsychotic VH in PD, the authors evaluated regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) changes in patients with PD and VH. METHODS: The authors compared 24 patients with PD who had nonpsychotic VH (hallucinators) and 41 patients with PD who had never experienced VH (non-hallucinators) using SPECT images with N-isopropyl-p-[(123)I]iodoamphetamine. Regional cerebral blood flow and cognitive deficits in chronic lyme disease.

This study examined brain functioning in patients with Lyme encephalopathy. Eleven patients underwent neuropsychological tests and Xenon(133)-regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) studies, using an external detector system. Each rCBF scan was age- and sex-matched to two archival, normal controls. While few differences were noted on gray-matter flow indices (ISI, fg), Lyme patients demonstrated significant flow reductions in white matter index (k(2)) (p=.004), particularly in the posterior temporal and parietal lobes bilaterally (p=.003). Flow reductions in white matter areas were significantly a

Regional cerebral blood flow and comorbid diagnosis in abstinent opioid addicts.

Studies using single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) have found low cerebral blood flow (CBF) in frontal and parietal cortices in patients with chronic opiate dependence. In the present study, SPECT with 99mTc-HMPAO as tracer was used to compare 27 detoxified opiate addicts with nine healthy control subjects. All the subjects were evaluated with clinical psychiatric (DSM-IV), psychometric and neuropsychological measures. Compared with normal control subjects, the addicts showed a non-significant reduction of whole brain perfusion values. Significant hypoperfusion in the right front

Frequency-dependent changes of regional cerebral blood flow during finger movements.

To study the effect of the repetition rate of a simple movement on the distribution and magnitude of neuronal recruitment, we measured regional CBF (rCBF) in eight normal volunteers, using positron emission tomography and 15O-labeled water. An auditory-cued, repetitive flexion movement of the right index finger against the thumb was performed at very slow (0.25 and 0.5 Hz), slow (0.75 and 1 Hz), fast (2 and 2.5 Hz), and very fast (3 and 4 Hz) rates. The increase of rCBF during movement relative to the resting condition was calculated for each pair of movement conditions. Left primary sensorimo

Continuous regional cerebral cortical blood flow monitoring in head-injured patients.

Continuous regional cerebral cortical blood flow (rCoBF) was monitored with thermal diffusion flowmetry in 56 severely head-injured patients. Adequate, reliable data were accumulated from 37 patients (21 acute subdural hematomas, 10 cerebral contusions, 4 epidural hematomas, and 2 intracerebral hematomas). The thermal sensor was placed at the time of either craniotomy or burr hole placement. In 15 patients, monitoring was initiated within 8 hours of injury. One-third of the comatose patients monitored within 8 hours had rCoBF measurements of 18 ml per 100 g per minute or less, consistent with

Regional cerebral blood flow and tissue oxygenation during hypocarbia in geese.

Very low arterial CO2 tension (PaCO2) experienced by birds during high-altitude flight may result in cerebral vasoconstriction and reduced cerebral O2 delivery. To examine this possibility, we measured regional cerebral blood flow (CBF) and tissue PO2 in pentobarbital-anesthetized geese (Anser domesticus). Twenty-five-micrometer Teflon-coated platinum electrodes for H2-clearance measurements of local blood flow or tissue PO2 were implanted in the cerebral cortex in 11 geese. Tissue H2 and O2 were measured by voltage clamping the electrodes at +0.30 and -0.5 V, respectively. Washout kinetics of

Cycloid psychosis: regional cerebral blood flow correlates of a psychotic episode.

Eight patients meeting Leonhard's criteria for cycloid psychosis were investigated on repeated occasions during a psychotic episode, with regional cerebral blood flow measurements and clinical ratings. The results showed that, at admission to the hospital, when the patients were clinically exacerbated, the mean hemispheric blood flow was significantly elevated compared with values from a normal control group. The hemispheric blood flow level covaried significantly with the degree of clinical symptoms, such that the more elevated the cortical blood flow was, the more behaviorally disturbed was

Obstructive hydrocephalus-induced parkinsonism. I: Decreased basal ganglia regional blood flow.

A 17-year-old male developed acute parkinsonism after obstruction of a ventriculoperitoneal shunt with subsequent hydrocephalus. Following a previous shunt replacement, he developed florid parkinsonism which was associated with Parinaud syndrome. The initial single-photon emission computed tomography of the brain using 99mTc-hexamethylpropylenamine oxime demonstrated decreased cerebral blood flow in the regions of the left caudate and putamen. The patient underwent shunt revision with minimal improvement and therefore levodopa/carbidopa (Sinemet 100/25) was administered. Subsequently, he exper

Alterations in regional blood flow during positive end-expiratory pressure ventilation.

PEEP improves the gas-exchange abnormalities that accompany adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). However, since PEEP decreases cardiac output, it may also alter regional blood flow and therefore, substrate delivery to specific organs. To test this hypothesis, radiolabeled 15-mu microspheres were used to directly quantify the effects of mechanical ventilation with PEEP on regional blood flow to individual organs in animals. Mechanical ventilation alone produced a -21.2 +/- 3.6% and a -28.1 +/- 5.2% decrease in cardiac output at 30 and 60 min, respectively. The addition of 14 cm H2O PEEP
