BACKGROUND: Individuals living with chronic advanced cancer (CAC) often face distinct physical, functional, and cognitive issues. Their rehabilitation needs are not yet routinely met, warranting further CAC-specific rehabilitation-based research. Given the complexity of functional and symptom presentations, engagement of individuals living with CAC as partners in the research process is encouraged to better understand the lived perspective. Formal engagement requires both structured approaches and iterative processes. The aim was to co-design a conceptual framework to develop and integrate eng

This review aims to explore the various symptoms caused by ischemic stroke and summarize current clinical care and rehabilitation treatment options for post-stroke dysphagia. Stroke is the second leading cause of death and a leading cause of long-term disability worldwide, with the highest prevalence in developing countries. Among them, ischemic stroke is the most common type, accounting for more than 80% of the total number of strokes and is the focus of current stroke research. More than one-third of ischemic stroke patients will be affected by post-stroke functional impairments, including b

BACKGROUND: Partnered rehabilitation research, where researchers and knowledge users (e.g. clinicians, administrators, clients) collaborate on research decision-making and activities, may enhance the use of evidence in clinical practice. Previous research identified gaps in formal evaluation and demonstrated effects of the partnering process in rehabilitation research. This study explored evaluation and effects of partnering on the research process and outcomes, and how partnering contributed to those effects.
METHODS: We conducted a qualitative descriptive study. Eligible participants were r

After a stroke, abnormal changes in neural oscillations that are related to the severity and prognosis of the disease can occur. Resetting these abnormal neural oscillations is a potential approach for stroke rehabilitation. Transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) can modulate intrinsic neural oscillations noninvasively and has attracted attention as a possible technique to improve multiple post-stroke symptoms, including deficits in speech, vision, and motor ability and overall neurological recovery. The clinical effect of tACS varies according to the selected frequency. Therefore

Accidents or diseases may cause impairment or even loss of human motor function, among which stroke is a disease which is most likely to cause disability and seriously endangers social health. During recent years, as a new nerve regulation technology, non-invasive brain stimulation technology can achieve the application of nerve stimulation to the brain, induce and promote neuroplasticity and improve the excitability of cerebral cortex. Especially, transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) and transcranial magnetic stimulation(TMS) have shown high therapeutic potential in motor rehabilita

OBJECTIVE: The last 25 years have seen profound changes in neurocognitive rehabilitation that continue to motivate its evolution. Although the concept of nervous system plasticity was discussed by William James (1890), the foundation for experience-based plasticity had not reached the critical empirical mass to seriously impact rehabilitation research until after 1992. The objective of this review is to describe how the emergence of neural plasticity has changed neurocognitive rehabilitation research.
METHOD: The important developments included (a) introduction of a widely available tool that

Phosphorus (P) is often the limiting nutrient for algal growth, and P in sediments can be released under suitable conditions. To control P release, in-situ control technology with lanthanum (La) modified bentonite clay (Phoslock(®)) was proposed and its effectiveness was tested and evaluated both in laboratory and field trials. The results of static and dynamic simulation experiments under different environmental conditions showed that with the application rate of Phoslock(®) at 0.5 kg/m(2), the orthophosphate (PO(4)-P) concentration of the overlying water decreased to a low level (≤0.02 mg/L)

BACKGROUND: With today's specialized medical care, life expectancy of persons with a spinal cord injury (SCI) has considerably improved. With increasing age and time since injury, many individuals with SCI, however, show a serious inactive lifestyle, associated with deconditioning and secondary health conditions (SHCs) (e.g. pressure sores, urinary and respiratory tract infections, osteoporosis, upper-extremity pain, obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease) and resulting in reduced participation and quality of life (QoL). Avoiding this downward spiral, is crucial.
OBJECTIVES: To understand

PURPOSE: Disability stigma is a key under-addressed driver of health inequalities among persons with disabilities, including barriers to accessing rehabilitation. Many studies conflate disability stigma and health stigma despite the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) distinguishing between the concepts of "disability" and a "health condition." This paper applies the ICF to identify the conceptual boundaries between disability stigma and health stigma.
METHOD: This paper comprises a conceptual review of the disability and health stigma literature. The ICF

sEMG is a non-invasive biomedical engineering technique that can detect and record electrical signals generated by muscles, reflecting both motor intentions and the degree of muscle contraction. This study aims to classify and recognize nine types of upper limb motor intentions based on surface electromyography (sEMG) and apply them to the interactive control of an end-effector rehabilitation robot. The research begins with selecting muscles and data preprocessing, incorporating the generation mechanism of sEMG along with the anatomical and kinesiological principles of upper limb muscles. Next

INTRODUCTION: Doctors working in rehabilitation settings have specialized clinical skills and experience, but research activity may be constrained by time pressures and inadequate current skills. This means missed opportunities to contribute to the evidence-base for better clinical practice and outcomes for people living with disabling, chronic complex conditions. This research aimed to understand rehabilitation doctors' research needs, experience, and aspirations to enable future training initiatives that are tailored to their practice context.
METHODS: This exploratory sequential mixed-meth

BACKGROUND: Primary care clinicians frequently struggle to apply the International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health (ICF) in clinical decision-making, despite its relevance for holistic and community-oriented care. To address this gap, we used an educational action research approach informed by participatory principles to iteratively develop an educational program that enables primary care physicians and trainees to understand and apply the ICF in real clinical contexts. METHODS: We employed a multi-cycle educational action research design integrating both quantitative and

While digital cardiac rehabilitation (CR) is an effective alternative to center-based CR, its components and mechanisms of change remain poorly understood. The Multiphase Optimization Strategy (MOST) provides a framework that allows the effects of individual components of complex interventions to be studied. There is limited guidance within MOST on how to develop a conceptual model. This article describes the development of a conceptual model of digital CR. The conceptual model was developed based on several strands of evidence: (i) a systematic review of 25 randomized controlled trials to ide
