A Comparative Study on Maternal and Perinatal Outcomes in Oral Hydration Therapy With Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS) Versus No Hydration Therapy in Term Pregnancies With Isolated Oligohydramnios.

Introduction Oligohydramnios, a condition characterized by reduced amniotic fluid volume, is associated with adverse maternal and perinatal outcomes, including increased rates of cesarean section, fetal distress, and neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) admissions. Maternal hydration therapy, particularly oral rehydration solution (ORS), has been proposed as a simple and cost-effective intervention to improve the amniotic fluid index (AFI) and perinatal outcomes in pregnancies complicated by isolated oligohydramnios. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of ORS therapy compared to no h

Oral rehydration solution coverage in under 5 children with diarrhea: a tri-country, subnational, cross-sectional comparative analysis of two demographic health surveys cycles.

BACKGROUND: More than 3 million children under 5 years in developing countries die from dehydration due to diarrhea, a preventable and treatable disease. We conducted a comparative analysis of two Demographic Health Survey (DHS) cycles to examine changes in ORS coverage in Zimbabwe, Zambia and Malawi. These surveys are cross-sectional conducted on a representative sample of the non-institutionalized individuals. METHODS: The sample is drawn using a stratified two-stage cluster sampling design with census enumeration areas, typically, selected first as primary sampling units (PSUs) and then a

Assessing safety and efficacy of a novel glucose-free amino acid oral rehydration solution for watery diarrhea management in children: a randomized, controlled, phase III trial.

BACKGROUND: Diarrhoeal disease poses a significant global health challenge, especially in children under three years old. Despite the effectiveness of oral rehydration therapy (ORT), its adoption remains low. Glucose-based ORS (GORS) is the standard, but novel formulations like glucose-free amino acid-based VS002A have emerged as potential alternatives. This study aimed to compare the safety and efficacy of VS002A against the standard WHO-ORS in treating non-cholera acute watery diarrhoea in children. METHODS: A triple-blind, randomized trial enrolled 310 male infants and children aged 6-36 m

Use of only oral rehydration salt solution for successful management of a young infant with serum sodium of 201 mmol/L in an urban diarrhoeal diseases hospital, Bangladesh.

A boy aged 4 months 7 days was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Dhaka Hospital of icddr,b, Dhaka, Bangladesh, with the problems of acute watery diarrhoea with some dehydration, pneumonia, lethargy, and hypernatraemia (serum sodium of 201 mmol/L). Correction for hypernatraemia was tried by using only oral rehydration salt (ORS) solution. Seizures occurred during correction of the hypernatraemia. These were difficult to control and required three doses of injection lorazepam, a loading dose of injection phenobarbitone, followed by injection phenytoin and finally two doses of inje

The benefits of the very early introduction of powdered rice and dried edible seeds (Dal moong) in the oral rehydration solution during the treatment of acute infectious diarrhoea of infancy.

We have examined whether the addition of powdered rice and pulses (Dal moong) to oral rehydration solution will decrease the purging rate and thereby increase the efficacy of the oral rehydration therapy. The study was carried out on 60 male infants, with acute watery diarrhoea, moderate dehydration but without fever, vomiting, or other conditions like septicaemia and meningitis. The infants were treated with either the standard WHO oral rehydration salt solution (ORS) or with a modified solution where glucose was removed and powdered rice and Dal moong were added. We found that the infants re

Evaluation of who oral rehydration solution (ORS) and salt tablets in resuscitating adult patients with burns covering more than 15% of total body surface area (TBSA).

Intra-venous (IV) burn resuscitation is effective; nevertheless it has its disadvantages. WHO Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS) has shown high effectiveness in treating dehydration. WHO-ORS, with salt supplement, seems to be suitable for burn resuscitation, where IV resuscitation is not available, feasible or possible. The objective of the study was to evaluate acute phase efficacy and safety, as well as limitations and complications of burn resuscitation using WHO-ORS and salt tablets. This randomized controlled clinical trial was conducted in the Burn Unit, Suez Canal University Hospital, Isma

Effects of intravenous rehydration protocols based on an acetate-containing electrolyte solution, isotonic saline, and an isotonic mixture of saline/sodium bicarbonate on acid-base status and plasma electrolyte concentrations in calves with diarrhoea.

Strong ion (metabolic) acidosis, dehydration, and electrolyte imbalances are common in neonatal calves with diarrhoea. Balanced crystalloids may provide advantages for rehydration purposes in those animals due to their polyionic composition and higher buffer capacity compared to conventional buffer-free fluids such as 0.9 % NaCl. This randomized clinical trial aimed to compare the effects of three infusion solutions - an acetate-containing balanced electrolyte solution (Sterofundin® ISO; Stero), 0.9 % saline (NaCl), and an isotonic saline-sodium bicarbonate mixture (NaClBic) - on acid-base sta

Modified oral rehydration therapy in a case with cystic fibrosis.

Infants with cystic fibrosis can develop episodes of hyponatremic, hypochloremic dehydration with metabolic alkalosis, and management is difficult. In this paper, we present a nine-month-old case with cystic fibrosis with pseudo-Bartter syndrome, who was rehydrated with two types of modified oral rehydration solution. Intravenous rehydration was impossible due to inaccessibility of route. With this oral rehydration treatment, her purging rate decreased, and serum sodium levels improved and remained stable. In cases with impossible intravenous route, one of these modified rehydration solutions

[Oral rehydration therapy in acute diarrheal syndrome. A critical analysis of various aspects].

The use of the "universal" glucoelectrolytic solution proposed by the World Health Organization (WHO) for the treatment of the acute diarrheal syndrome, has now been recognized worldwide and successfully employed in the treatment of diarrhea and the maintenance of the normohydrated state once the patient has recuperated. All in all, it is necessary to comment and distinguish its beneficial aspects once placed into practice. This article primarily focuses on: 1. The recognition that local health indicators will determine importantly, the evaluation of the results obtained from the use of oral r

Formulae of sugar-salt solutions recommended for treatment of diarrhoeal dehydration at home in African countries.

During a conference on diarrhoeal diseases in Tanzania in 1984, 19 participants representing 16 countries in Africa gave the formulae for oral rehydration solutions therapy (ORS) which they recommended or instructed for home use in their own countries. There were gross variations in recommended quantities of sugar, salt and water. Theoretical calculations indicated that the glucose concentration ranged from 29 to 174 mmol/l (recommended 30-112 mmol/l) and that of sodium from 9 to 116 mmol/l (recommended 30-80 mmol/l). It is very important that countries should ensure that the recommendations f

Hypernatremic diarrheal dehydration treated with oral glucose-electrolyte solution containing 90 or 75 mEq/L of sodium.

Of 33 infants with hypernatremic dehydration (serum Na+ of greater than or equal to 150 mEq/L) 7 were excluded, 6 because severe alteration of the level of consciousness or shock precluded oral rehydration and 1 because he was given glucose-electrolyte solution plus water. We studied the remaining 27 infants. Twenty (group A) were treated with the World Health Organization-recommended oral rehydration solution (90 mEq/L Na+) and seven (group B) were treated with Pedialyte-RS (Abbott Laboratories Ltd.; 75 mEq/L Na+). Experimentally induced hyperchloremic and DL-lactic acidosis in calves: an attempt to study the effects of oral rehydration on acid-base status.

Many diarrheic calves suffer from metabolic acidosis, which is commonly treated by oral rehydration therapy. Oral rehydration solutions can be prepared in water, milk, or milk replacer. Therefore, the aim of the study was to verify dietary effects of water- or milk replacer-based oral rehydration solutions on parameters of acid-base balance in calves with experimentally induced hyperchloremic and dl-lactate acidosis. In 12 calves, hyperchloremic or dl-lactate acidosis was induced by HCl or dl-lactic acid infusions according to protocols outlined in previous literature. Immediately after induct

[Rapid intravenous rehydration in acute diarrhea].

With the use of oral rehydration, the need for the use of endovenous rehydration has decreased considerably. Albeit, the use is still necessary in severely dehydrated patients or when oral rehydration fails. Textbooks produced in developed countries recommend slow administration of fluids to correct dehydration in 12 to 24 hours. In developing countries, due to the great number of severely dehydrated patients, this approach is not useful. We developed, during the last 20 years, an approach to intravenous rehydration that permits rehydration of the severely ill patient in a much shorter time (2
