Reinforcement learning and Tourette syndrome.

In this chapter, we report the first experimental explorations of reinforcement learning in Tourette syndrome, realized by our team in the last few years. This report will be preceded by an introduction aimed to provide the reader with the state of the art of the knowledge concerning the neural bases of reinforcement learning at the moment of these studies and the scientific rationale beyond them. In short, reinforcement learning is learning by trial and error to maximize rewards and minimize punishments. This decision-making and learning process implicates the dopaminergic system projecting t

Improving oral reading fluency: a brief experimental analysis of combining an antecedent intervention with consequences.

A brief experimental analysis was used to evaluate the relative effectiveness of combining two consequences (contingent reinforcement or performance feedback) with an antecedent intervention (listening passage preview and repeated readings) on the oral reading fluency of 6 elementary students. The antecedent intervention increased the number of correctly read words per minute for all 6 students. For 4 of the students, pairing the antecedent intervention with either of the consequences resulted in higher reading rates over the antecedent intervention alone. Undifferentiated results were obtaine

A behavioral approach to understanding and treating pathological gambling.

This report provides a behavioral account of gambling and its treatment. It describes the similarities between gambling and other behaviors maintained by intermittent schedules of reinforcement, the relationship between response cost and gambling behaviors, and how magnitudes of reinforcers affect gambling behaviors. In addition, the relationship between immediacy of reinforcement and behavior is described. Using these behavioral phenomena, behavioral and cognitive-behavioral treatments of pathological gambling are described. Finally, we present the rationale and framework for our cognitive-be

Behavioral approaches to promoting play.

A variety of techniques grounded in behavioral psychology, and more specifically in applied behavior analysis, have been established to increase and improve play skills in children with autistic spectrum disorders. This article introduces a set of efficacious methods, which range from highly structured techniques to more naturalistic strategies. It focuses on object play as other authors in the issue discuss social play in greater depth. Behavioral techniques that are reviewed include: discrete trial training, use of stereotyped behaviors to increase play skills, pivotal response training, rec

Effects of voucher-based intervention on abstinence and retention in an outpatient treatment for cocaine addiction: a randomized controlled trial.

The aims of this study were to assess whether voucher magnitude improved cocaine abstinence and retention in an outpatient treatment for cocaine dependence, and to determine the effectiveness of a contingency management intervention in a European cultural context. A randomized controlled trial was conducted in which 96 participants who were randomly assigned to 1 of 3 treatment conditions in a community setting: standard outpatient treatment, community reinforcement approach (CRA) plus low monetary value vouchers (each point earned was equivalent to 0.125 Euro, US$ 0.18), and CRA plus high mon

Effects of a cue associated with cocaine or food reinforcers on extinction and postextinction return of behavior.

Studies of instrumental responding often include the delivery of a cue that is coincident with the delivery of the reinforcer. One purpose of this is for the cue to be removed during extinction and then presented later to assess whether responding returns (cue-induced reinstatement). In two experiments, we examined the effects of having a cue associated with reinforcement present or absent during extinction. In Experiment 1, the cue was associated with fixed ratio responding for intravenous cocaine or food pellets in one context (Context A), followed by extinction in another context (Context B

Gambling despite financial loss-the role of losses disguised as wins in multi-line slots.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Slot machines pose serious problems for a subset of gamblers. On multi-line slots, many small credit returns are less than one's spin wager, resulting in a net loss to the player. These outcomes are called 'losses disguised as wins' (LDWs). We aimed to show that different proportions of LDWs could differentially affect gambling persistence (continuing to gamble despite financial loss), but that such LDW effects may depend on problem gambling symptomatology. DESIGN: Gamblers were randomized to play 100 spins on a game with few, moderate or many LDWs (between-subjects desig

Understanding active school travel through the Behavioural Ecological Model.

Active school travel (AST) is an important source of physical activity for children and a conceptual understanding of AST is necessary to inform promotion efforts. The aim of this article is to provide a conceptual analysis of AST. All currently identified AST formulations include intra-individual variables which are often recommended as intervention targets. However, existing literature lacks clarity on precisely how these intra-individual variables might shape specific AST interventions. Moreover, evaluative studies of AST interventions typically fail to specify an underpinning theory or mod

Persistence and resistance to extinction in the domestic dog: Basic research and applications to canine training.

This review summarizes the research investigating behavioral persistence and resistance to extinction in the dog. The first part of this paper reviews Behavioral Momentum Theory and its applications to Applied Behavior Analysis and training of pet dogs with persistent behavioral problems. I also highlight how research on Behavioral Momentum Theory can be applied to the training of detection dogs in an attempt to enhance detection performance in the presence of behavioral disruptors common in operational settings. In the second part of this review, I highlight more basic research on behavioral

Reinforcing effectiveness of midazolam, ethanol, and sucrose: behavioral economic comparison of a mixture relative to its component solutions.

Benzodiazepines (BZs) are relatively safe when administered alone. However, these drugs can produce severe side effects when coadministered with ethanol. Despite these adverse consequences, rates of concurrent BZ and ethanol misuse are increasing, and it is unclear whether this behavior is maintained by an enhanced reinforcing effect of the mixture. To address this issue, the current study compared the reinforcing effectiveness of sucrose solutions mixed with midazolam, ethanol, or both. Eight male rats were trained to orally self-administer solutions of either sucrose (S), sucrose+midazolam (

Bayesian reinforcement learning: A basic overview.

We and other animals learn because there is some aspect of the world about which we are uncertain. This uncertainty arises from initial ignorance, and from changes in the world that we do not perfectly know; the uncertainty often becomes evident when our predictions about the world are found to be erroneous. The Rescorla-Wagner learning rule, which specifies one way that prediction errors can occasion learning, has been hugely influential as a characterization of Pavlovian conditioning and, through its equivalence to the delta rule in engineering, in a much wider class of learning problems. A laboratory comparison of two variations of differential-reinforcement-of-low-rate procedures.

We compared 2 variations of differential-reinforcement-of-low-rate (DRL) procedures: spaced-responding DRL, in which a reinforcer was delivered contingent on each response if a specified interval had passed since the last response, and full-session DRL, in which a reinforcer was presented at the end of an interval if the response rate was below criterion within the specified interval. We used a human-operant procedure and analyzed within-session responding to assess any similarities or differences between procedures. Data revealed a positive contingency between responding and reinforcement und

Targeting social skills deficits in an adolescent with pervasive developmental disorder.

Social skills deficits are a defining feature of individuals diagnosed with autism and other pervasive developmental disorders (PDD), which can impair functioning and put the individual at higher risk for developing problem behavior (e.g., self-injury, aggression). In the current study, an adolescent with PDD displayed inappropriate social behavior (inappropriate comments, social withdrawal, and touching others without their permission) during social interactions. An intervention using instructions, differential reinforcement, and corrective feedback successfully reduced inappropriate social b

Reward Prediction Errors Drive Reinforcement Learning and Recognition Memory: Gender Differences in Methamphetamine Abusers.

OBJECTIVES: Methamphetamine (MA) abusers have impaired executive functioning with gender differences, which may be related to the reward prediction errors (RPEs) that drive reinforcement learning and recognition memory, as RPE signaling is impaired in MA abusers. We examined whether the driving effects of RPE on reinforcement learning and recognition memory are impaired in MA abusers and how they differ between women and men. METHODS: Eighty-two MA abusers (43 men, 39 women) from Zhejiang Compulsory Isolation Drug Rehabilitation Center and 86 non-users (45 men, 41 women) from Wenzhou medical

Flavor-independent maintenance, extinction, and reinstatement of fat self-administration in mice.

BACKGROUND: Mounting evidence suggests that overeating may be conceptualized within the same behavioral and neurobiological framework as drug addiction. One potentially important difference between overeating versus drug abuse refers to the sensory stimulation of oral receptors by palatable foods, a feature that may be required for reinforcement during intake. Likewise, postingestive effects and caloric content of food also contribute to reinforcing behavior and might influence the development of compulsive eating behavior. The purpose of the current study was to establish whether intragastric

Training generalized receptive prepositions in retarded children.

THREE RETARDED CHILDREN WERE TRAINED, USING PROMPTING AND REINFORCEMENT PROCEDURES, TO RESPOND CORRECTLY TO THREE CATEGORIES OF PREPOSITIONAL REQUESTS: "put the-next to the-", "put the-under the-", and "put the-on top of the-". Training sessions were alternated with probe sessions throughout the study. During training, a child was trained to respond to one request (e.g., "put the doll next to the cup"); during probing, the child was tested for generalization of this training to untrained requests. Responses to untrained requests were never prompted nor reinforced. The results showed that, as r

Any-step dynamics model improves future predictions for offline reinforcement learning via hierarchical roll-out.

Offline reinforcement learning constrains policy optimization within a given dataset, avoiding the high costs and unpredictable risks associated with online sampling in the real world. Model-based approaches provide a promising direction for offline reinforcement learning, as extensive policy explorations and evaluations can happen within the data-driven dynamics model, transcending the limitations imposed by the dataset boundaries. However, accurately predicting long-horizon sequential steps in the learned dynamics model remains a significant challenge. Model roll-out in previous methods reli
