Disordered eating, oral health and sports.

Multiple studies have identified that eating disorders are more common in elite athletes than in non-athlete populations. There are a wide range of types of eating disorders that can impact the oral and general health of athletes, including anorexia, bulimia, binge eating disorder, avoidant restrictive food intake disorder and other specified feeding and eating disorder. In addition, athletes can be affected by disordered eating such as relative energy deficiency in sport. This paper will explore what we know about the impact of eating disorders on oral health of athletes. We will consider sug

Care of the Active Female.

Physical activity has many health-related benefits, including prevention and management of chronic disease, weight management, and improved mental health. Active girls and women of all ages and abilities are at risk of relative energy deficiency in sport, a syndrome encompassing low energy availability, menstrual irregularities, and disordered bone metabolism. Presence of amenorrhea or oligomenorrhea may suggest reduced energy availability. Active females are at risk of overuse injuries, including patellofemoral pain syndrome, iliotibial band syndrome, and stress fractures; treatment usually i

Apolipoprotein CIII correlates with lipoproteins in the fed state and is not regulated by leptin administration in states of hypoleptinemia induced by acute or chronic energy deficiency: Results from two randomised controlled trials.

BACKGROUND: Medications targeting the leptin and Apolipoprotein CIII (APOC3) pathways are currently under development for the treatment of hypertriglyceridaemia. Given that both pathways are implicated in triglyceride regulation, it is unknown whether they function independently or interact under physiological conditions and under acute or long-term energy deficiency. METHODS: APOC3 levels and their association with circulating lipids and lipoproteins were evaluated in the context of two randomised controlled studies. In Study-1, 15 healthy individuals were examined under three distinct condi

Running on Empty: Relative Energy Deficiency in a Military Endurance Athlete.

Relative Energy Deficiency in Sports (RED-S) is a clinical syndrome characterized by low caloric intake relative to energy expenditure, resulting in a cascade of endocrine, metabolic, and musculoskeletal consequences. In females, hallmark features include decreased bone mineral density and menstrual dysfunction, though the syndrome affects multiple organ systems in both sexes. We present the case of a 22-year-old active-duty military member who suffered recurrent stress fractures, irregular menstrual cycles, and chronic fatigue that impacted her duty status. She was noted to have a long histor

Health of Collegiate Athletes - An Investigation into Symptoms Associated with Low Energy Availability.

Chronic low energy availability (LEA) describes inadequate energy intake relative to expenditure and underlies Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (REDs), impairing physiological health and athletic performance. This study examined relationships between both anthropometry and body composition, cardiovascular function, and sleep quality in collegiate athletes with LEA-associated symptoms. A total of 109 collegiate athletes (Males = 43, females = 66) underwent anthropometric analysis (BOD POD), resting cardiovascular assessment, and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) questionnaire. The effect of underweight on female and male reproduction.

Chronic energy deficiency can impair the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis and lead to hypothalamic anovulation in underweight women. This review presents the syndromes related to underweight status that are associated with infertility, summarizes the underlying mechanisms, and reviews the available treatment options. Eating disorders, such as anorexia nervosa (AN), constitute the most common cause of infertility in underweight women, who, in addition, experience miscarriages, and sexual dysfunction. The relative energy deficiency in sports (RED-S; former terminology: athlete's triad)

Preparticipation examinations for varsity female athletes: The Canadian healthcare practitioners' perspectives.

BACKGROUND: Preparticipation examinations (PPEs) are widely used in sport to gather baseline health data before a competitive season. However, content is not standardized across institutions and is often not tailored to health needs of female athletes. OBJECTIVES: 1) Identify which female athlete-specific health concerns healthcare practitioners (HCPs) consider clinically relevant and important to include in PPEs, and 2) explore HCPs' comfort levels in addressing these concerns. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was distributed to HCPs who had worked with Canadian university varsity female a

Low energy availability, menstrual dysfunction, and impaired bone health: A survey of elite para athletes.

INTRODUCTION: The Female Athlete Triad (Triad) is a syndrome describing three interrelated conditions: low energy availability (LEA), menstrual dysfunction, and low bone mineral density (BMD). Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (RED-S) expands the Triad to include multiple physiologic consequences of LEA in both sexes. The purpose of this study is to determine the prevalence of factors associated with the Triad/RED-S in an elite para athlete population. METHODS: Athletes were U.S. elite para athletes training to qualify for the 2016 or the 2018 Paralympic Games. Participants completed an onl

Age and menstrual cycle may be important in establishing pregnancy in female athletes after retirement from competition.

BACKGROUND: Although it has been shown that amenorrhea associated with low energy availability or relative energy deficiency in sport affects body physiology in female athletes, the association between menstrual dysfunction during active sports careers and reproductive function after retirement is not clear. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association between menstrual dysfunction during their active sports career and post-retirement infertility in female athletes. METHODS: A voluntary web-based survey was aimed at former female athletes who had become pregnant and gave birth to their first ch

Hungry runners - low energy availability in male endurance athletes and its impact on performance and testosterone: mini-review.

Low Energy Availability (LEA) arises from the inability to cover energy needs and requirements of training or normal physiological functions. This value differs from the energy balance, which takes into account the total daily energy intake compared to all the energy expended, regardless of the amount of fat-free mass. Insufficient energy consumption affects recovery, adaptation processes, increases the risk of injury or illness, so all of this can negatively affect performance. This mini-review is written on research articles in Pubmed database related to LEA in endurance-trained men and its

Stress fractures.

Stress fractures (SF) represent 10%-20% of all injuries in sport medicine. An SF occurs when abnormal and repetitive loading is applied on normal bone: The body cannot adapt quickly enough, leading to microdamage and fracture. The etiology is multifactorial with numerous risk factors involved. Diagnosis of SF can be achieved by identifying intrinsic and extrinsic factors, obtaining a good history, performing a physical exam, and ordering laboratory and imaging studies (magnetic resonance imaging is the current gold standard). Relative energy deficiency in sport (RED-S) is a known risk factor.

Low energy availability surrogates associated with lower bone mineral density and bone stress injury site.

BACKGROUND: Exercise is an osteogenic stimulus that should increase bone mineral density (BMD) and protect against injury. However, some female athletes have lower BMD and increased bone stress injury (BSI) risk. Impaired bone health seen in athletes may be explained by low energy availability as described by concepts of Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (RED-S) and Female Athlete Triad (Triad). OBJECTIVE: To elucidate the relationship between RED-S/Triad risk factors and BSI to high-risk (femoral neck, sacrum) and low-risk (other) bones. DESIGN: Cross-sectional survey and retrospective ch

Patterns of energy availability and carbohydrate intake differentiate between adaptable and problematic low energy availability in female athletes.

BACKGROUND: Problematic low energy availability (EA) is the underlying culprit of relative energy deficiency in sport (REDs), and its consequences have been suggested to be exacerbated when accompanied by low carbohydrate (CHO) intakes. OBJECTIVES: This study compared dietary intake, nutrition status and occurrence of REDs symptoms in groups of female athletes, displaying different patterns of EA and CHO intake. METHODS: Female athletes (n = 41, median age 20.4 years) from various sports weighed and recorded their food intake and training for 7 consecutive days via a photo-assisted mobile ap

Common injuries and ailments of the female athlete; pathophysiology, treatment and prevention.

With increasing numbers of women competing in high school and collegiate athletics, it is important that physicians become familiar with injury patterns and medical conditions unique to the female athlete. Observations and clinical data have elucidated unique biomechanical, anatomic and hormonal factors that predispose skeletally mature female athletes to anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries, patellofemoral disorders and lower extremity stress fractures. Additionally, younger female athletes are particularly at risk of developing components of the "Female Athlete Triad" (more recently inc

Lower Bone Mineral Density in Female Elite Athletes With Menstrual Dysfunction From Mixed Sports.

Menstrual dysfunction (MD) in female athletes might be indicative of the syndrome of relative energy deficiency in sports (REDs), associated with, e.g., impaired bone health, an increased risk of injury, and decreased performance. In the present study, we investigated differences in objective indicators of REDs, bone mineral density (BMD), and blood-based biomarkers in female elite athletes with self-reported MD or eumenorrhoea (CON) from mixed sport disciplines. Athletes reporting < 9 menstrual bleedings within the last year were recruited in the MD group, whereas eumenorrheic athletes with n

Resistance Training and Skeletal Muscle Protein Metabolism in Eumenorrheic Females: Implications for Researchers and Practitioners.

Resistance training is essential for health and performance and confers many benefits such as increasing skeletal muscle mass, increasing strength and power output, and improving metabolic health. Resistance training is a major component of the physical activity guidelines, yet research in female populations is limited. Recent increases in the promotion of, and the participation by, females in sport and exercise, highlight the need for an increase in understanding of evidence-based best practice exercise prescription for females. The aim of this review is to provide an overview of the current
