[Mental retardation and family environment: role of emotional factors].

The authors present data from an experimental study conducted on 20 institutionalized mentally handicapped adult patients. Relevant family variables were investigated by means of the Expressed Emotion (EE) scales, then compared with similar variables obtained in a matched sample of 20 schizophrenic patients and their families. Results show, in relatives of mentally handicapped patients, a higher rate of Warmth than in relatives of schizophrenics (p = 0.009), while other EE scales appear to reach similar values in both groups. Within the mentally handicapped family group, a higher rate of Emoti

Beyond Core ADHD Symptoms: Clinical Evaluation of Antisocial Behaviours Within a Unified Externalizing Framework in Youth With ADHD.

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) frequently co-occurs with oppositional and conduct-related behavioural difficulties, raising questions about how these symptoms are structurally related within clinically diagnosed youth. Dimensional models of psychopathology, such as the Hierarchical Taxonomy of Psychopathology (HiTOP), conceptualize these behaviours as part of a broader externalizing spectrum characterized by shared patterns of behavioural dysregulation. However, empirical evidence examining the coherence of antisocial externalizing dimensions within paediatric ADHD clinical sa

The perspectives of individuals with incomplete spinal cord injury on measuring the intensity of balance challenge during reactive balance training: A qualitative study.

IMPORTANCE: Balance rehabilitation is an important component of recovery for individuals with incomplete spinal cord injury (iSCI), who are at heightened risk of falls due to impaired postural control. Intensity of balance challenge refers to the postural control demand of a task relative to an individual's maximum capacity. Achieving adequate intensity of balance challenge is essential for appropriate prescription of balance exercises. Balance intensity is often assessed through self-report on an ordinal scale. However, there is limited understanding of how individuals with iSCI interpret the

Development of a multidimensional body composition grading system for cancer prognosis.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Sarcopenia, adipopenia, and body mass are recognized as prognostic factors in cancer, but their combined effects on survival remain unclear. This study aims to construct a comprehensive body composition grading system (BCS) and assess its prognostic value for cancer patients. METHOD: Clinical case data from 5629 cancer patients were retrospectively analyzed. The BCS (Levels I-V) was constructed based on sarcopenia grading (defined by skeletal muscle index, ASMI), adiposity reduction (defined by fat mass index, FMI), and body mass index (BMI). Survival curves were analyzed

Scaling features in high-concentrations PM2.5 evolution: the Ignored factor affecting scarlet fever incidence.

As an acute respiratory disease, scarlet fever has great harm to public health. Some evidence indicates that the time distribution pattern of heavy PM2.5 pollution occurrence may have an impact on health risks. This study aims to reveal the relation between scaling features in high-concentrations PM2.5 (HC-PM2.5) evolution and scarlet fever incidence (SFI). Based on the data of Hong Kong from 2012 to 2019, fractal box-counting dimension (D) is introduced to capture the scaling features of HC-PM2.5. It has been found that index D can quantify the time distribution of HC-PM2.5, and lower D value

Positive Predictive Value: A Clinician's Guide to Avoid Misinterpreting the Results of Screening Tests.

Background: Recent studies have used self-administered screening scales in community and clinical samples to identify individuals who probably or likely had the disorder of interest. A better understanding of the statistics of screening, specifically positive predictive value, would indicate that the conclusions drawn from these studies are not justified. Methods: The principles and statistics of diagnostic screening and how screening is distinguished from case-finding are reviewed, followed by a review of studies that have failed to consider the positive predictive value of the screening scal

Multi-Scale Transient Thermo-Mechanical Coupling Analysis Method for the SiCf/SiC Composite Guide Vane.

In composites, fiber-matrix thermal mismatch induces stress heterogeneity that is beyond the resolution of macroscopic approaches. The asymptotic expansion homogenization method is used to create a multi-scale thermo-mechanical coupling model that predicts the elastic modulus, thermal expansion coefficients, and thermal conductivity of ceramic matrix composites at both the macro- and micro-scales. These predictions are verified to be accurate with a maximum relative error of 9.7% between the measured and predicted values. The multi-scale analysis method is then used to guide the vane's thermal

Minimally clinically important relative change instead of difference following surgery for degenerative cervical radiculopathy: a nationwide study on 5300 patients using prospectively collected data.

OBJECTIVE: The landscape of healthcare policies has undergone significant reforms, with a notable shift toward a patient-centered basis. This change has prioritized the use of metrics reflecting subjective patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs). However, these metrics are often limited, especially in terms of determining clinically relevant changes over time. The concept of the minimal clinically important difference (MCID) has been introduced to address this limitation. In this study, the authors aimed to assess the predictive capability of relative change and its corresponding threshold v

Psychometric properties and predictive validity of the Mt Scale of the MMPI-2.

The College Maladjustment (Mt) Scale is a 41-item supplementary scale of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory. It was designed to identify college students classified as maladjusted. Very little research has been conducted on the Mt Scale in the 40 years since its inception. The current study had the following four goals: (a) provide additional data on the internal consistency reliability, (b) examine the relationship between Mt Scale scores and various school-related domains, (c) examine the relationship between Mt scores and indices of distress (trauma exposure, post-traumatic str

Earthquake breakdown energy scaling despite constant fracture energy.

In the quest to determine fault weakening processes that govern earthquake mechanics, it is common to infer the earthquake breakdown energy from seismological measurements. Breakdown energy is observed to scale with slip, which is often attributed to enhanced fault weakening with continued slip or at high slip rates, possibly caused by flash heating and thermal pressurization. However, seismologically inferred breakdown energy varies by more than six orders of magnitude and is frequently found to be negative-valued. This casts doubts about the common interpretation that breakdown energy is a p

Scale matters: Patterns of inequity in measures of structural racism can reverse direction when using the relative vs. the absolute scale.

Quantifying the effect of structural racism on health is a subject of sustained interest. To measure structural racism, analysts often calculate contrasts between marginalized and privileged groups on measures of social determinants in health. These contrasts are predominantly calculated on the relative scale, rather than the absolute scale. In this paper, we investigated the rank ordering of 38 US states in terms of the relative and absolute difference in education and incarceration between Black and White individuals using 2015-2019 data from the American Community Survey and the National Pr

Saliva cortisol levels and physiological parameter fluctuations in mild traumatic brain injury patients compared to controls.

BACKGROUND: Evidence suggests that fluctuations of cortisol and physiological parameters can emerge during the course of mild Traumatic Brain Injury (mTBI). OBJECTIVE: To investigate fluctuations of cortisol and physiological parametersduring the acute phase of mTBI in hospitalized patients. METHODS: 30 participants (19 patients with mTBI and 11 controls) were examined for saliva cortisol dynamics, heart rate (HR), systolic arterial pressure (SAP), diastolic arterial pressure (DAP), mean arterial pressure (MAP) and body temperature (BT) fluctuations for four consecutive days. Also, the parti

Multiscale modeling reveals synergy between CCL19 and PD-1 blockade in reshaping the TNBC microenvironment.

Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) presents a major clinical challenge owing to its immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment, target scarcity, and poor therapeutic response. Recently, the combination therapy of immune checkpoint blockade and CCL19 has shown significant efficacy in TNBC. To systematically unravel the synergistic mechanisms between CCL19 and anti-PD-1, we developed a mathematical model by integrating cellular and molecular scales to capture essential tumor-immune interactions and predict the dynamics of tumor evolution under various therapies. In this study, we proposed three

[Nocturnal oxymetry in patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis: role in predicting survival].

Death is the most important end point along the course of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). It is commonly attributed to a respiratory failure in relation with a restrictive respiratory disorder. However, in clinical practice, it is frequent to observe that death has not direct relation with the values of the respiratory function, at least measured with vital capacity. It is also frequent that relatives report sudden death during nocturnal sleep. All these features raised the question of the possible relation between death and nocturnal oxymetry in ALS patients. In a prospective study, we s

Scoring systems for shoulder conditions.

We evaluated the comparability of four commonly used shoulder scoring systems in the United States. Fifty-two patients had 53 shoulder stabilization procedures. Surgical procedures included 34 open Bankart-type repairs, 15 capsular shifts, and 4 arthroscopic stabilizations. Results were assessed using the following scales: 1) Rowe, 2) modified-Rowe, 3) University of California at Los Angeles, and 4) the pre-1994 American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons scale. No consensus has been reached on the relative value of these systems. We observed significant variations using these systems. A majority of

Restoration Plantings Promote Functional Recovery of Soil Fungi.

The global scale of biodiversity loss and land degradation has prompted the establishment of ambitious international restoration agreements, with the goal of returning biodiverse and functional ecosystems. Restoration interventions are often vegetation focused, and while they yield positive, measurable outcomes, they do not always lead to whole ecosystem recovery. Although soil microbiota such as fungi are integral ecosystem components (e.g., as symbionts, decomposers and drivers of nutrient cycling), they are largely absent from restoration planning and monitoring. Therefore, how fungi respon
