Therapist-Assisted Internet-Based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Versus Progressive Relaxation in Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder: Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a highly disabling psychological disorder with a chronic course if left untreated. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) has been shown to be an effective treatment, but access to face-to-face CBT is not always possible. Internet-based CBT (iCBT) has become an increasingly viable option. However, no study has compared iCBT to an analogous control condition using a randomized controlled trial (RCT). OBJECTIVE: A 2-armed RCT was used to compare a therapist-assisted 12-module iCBT to an analogous active attention control condition (therapist-assist

Effects of cognitive behavioral therapy with relaxation vs. imagery rescripting on test anxiety: A randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Test anxiety is a common condition in students, which may lead to impaired academic performance as well as to distress. The primary objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of two cognitive-behavioral interventions designed to reduce test anxiety. Test anxiety in the participants was diagnosed as social or specific phobia according to DSM-IV. Subsequently subjects were randomized to three groups: a moderated self-help group, which served as a control group, and two treatment groups, where either relaxation techniques or imagery rescripting were applied. METHODS: S

Plasma Cytokine Levels in Fibromyalgia and Their Response to 15 Weeks of Progressive Resistance Exercise or Relaxation Therapy.

The aims of this study were to compare circulating cytokines between FM and healthy controls and to investigate the effect on cytokine levels by 15 weeks of progressive resistance exercise or relaxation therapy in FM. Baseline plasma cytokine levels and clinical data were analyzed in 125 women with FM and 130 age-matched healthy women. The FM women were then randomized to progressive resistance exercise (n = 49) or relaxation (n = 43). Baseline IL-2, IL-6, TNF-α, IP-10, and eotaxin were higher in FM than in healthy controls (P < 0.041), whereas IL-1β was lower (P < 0.001). There were weak corr

Physiological predictors of response to exposure, relaxation, and rescripting therapy for chronic nightmares in a randomized clinical trial.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Evidence supports the use of cognitive behavioral therapies for nightmares in trauma-exposed individuals. This randomized clinical trial replicated a study of exposure, relaxation, and rescripting therapy(ERRT) and extended prior research by including broad measures of mental health difficulties, self-reported physical health problems, and quality of life. Additionally, physiological correlates of treatment-related change assessed from a script-driven imagery paradigm were examined. METHODS: Forty-seven individuals were randomized to treatment or waitlist control. RESULTS:

Cost-Utility of Attachment-Based Compassion Therapy (ABCT) for Fibromyalgia Compared to Relaxation: A Pilot Randomized Controlled Trial.

A recent study has supported the efficacy of Attachment-Based Compassion Therapy (ABCT) compared to relaxation (REL) for the management of fibromyalgia (FM). The main objective of this paper is to examine the cost-utility of ABCT compared to REL in terms of effects on quality-adjusted life years (QALYs) as well as healthcare costs. Forty-two Spanish patients with FM received 8 weekly group sessions of ABCT or REL. Data collection took place at pre- and 3-month follow-up. Cost-utility of the two treatment groups (ABCT vs. REL) was compared by examining treatment outcomes in terms of QALYs (obta

[Resistance to vecuronium induced muscle relaxation in a patient with mental retardation receiving phenytoin for chronic anticonvulsant therapy].

A 36-year-old woman weighing 31.7 kg with mental retardation was scheduled for dental treatment under general anesthesia. She had undergone anticonvulsant therapy (phenytoin, clonazepam, zonisamide) for years. Standard monitors and bispectral index (BIS) monitor were applied except for an accelomyography. Anesthesia was induced with propofol and vecuronium, and maintained with nitrous oxide in oxygen, with 1.5-2.0% end-tidal concentration of sevoflurane. Forty minutes after induction of anesthesia, spontaneous respiration (SR) started suddenly despite adequate depth of anesthesia (BIS value 35

Exposure-Focused Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for Youth Anxiety Disorders: Superiority Over Relaxation-Based Comparator and Predictors of Response.

OBJECTIVE: Evidence supports exposure-focused cognitive-behavioral therapy (EF-CBT) for child and adolescent anxiety disorders, but protocols comparing EF-CBT with other therapy modalities (eg, relaxation) are understudied, and little is known about predictors of EF-CBT response. Extending an interim report, this study compared EF-CBT with an active comparator, relaxation and mentorship training (RMT), and examined predictors of EF-CBT response. METHOD: Participants were 139 youths with transdiagnostic anxiety disorders (age range 7-18 years, mean age 12.3). Sample demographics were male, 24.

Treatment of Youth Misophonia: A Randomized Controlled Trial Comparing Transdiagnostic Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy to Psychoeducation and Relaxation Training.

Misophonia is a distinct clinical disorder that lacks official diagnostic classification. Despite growing evidence of the prevalence and impairment associated with this condition, little research has tested possible evidence-based interventions. The current study presents outcomes from a two-site randomized controlled trial (N = 43) comparing the efficacy of the Unified Protocols for Transdiagnostic Treatment of Emotional Disorders in Children and Adolescents (UP-C/A; n = 29) to a psychoeducation and relaxation training (PRT; n = 14) intervention for youth with misophonia. Increased endogenous H2S generation by CBS, CSE, and 3MST gene therapy improves ex vivo renovascular relaxation in hyperhomocysteinemia.

Hydrogen sulfide (H(2)S) has recently been identified as a regulator of various physiological events, including vasodilation, angiogenesis, antiapoptotic, and cellular signaling. Endogenously, H(2)S is produced as a metabolite of homocysteine (Hcy) by cystathionine β-synthase (CBS), cystathionine γ-lyase (CSE), and 3-mercaptopyruvate sulfurtransferase (3MST). Although Hcy is recognized as vascular risk factor at an elevated level [hyperhomocysteinemia (HHcy)] and contributes to vascular injury leading to renovascular dysfunction, the exact mechanism is unclear. The goal of the current study wa

Hybrid cognitive behavioral therapy versus relaxation training for co-occurring anxiety and alcohol disorder: a randomized clinical trial.

OBJECTIVE: Treatment for alcohol use disorder (AUD) is far less effective for those with a co-occurring anxiety disorder. Surprisingly, adding an independent anxiety treatment to AUD treatment does not substantially improve the poor alcohol outcomes of these patients. This may reflect the lack of attention from independent treatments to the dynamic interaction of anxiety symptoms with alcohol use and drinking motivation. On the basis of this view, we assembled a cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) program designed to both reduce anxiety symptoms and weaken the links between the experience of an
