Joan of Arc: Sanctity, witchcraft or epilepsy?

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this article is to describe whether Joan of Arc had epilepsy and how that may have influenced her sense of mission and ability to encourage thousands of people to help her to chase the English out of France. METHODS: Documentation of her Trial of Condemnation in 1431 provides a description of her episodes of experienced voices and visions. RESULTS: From the age of thirteen, Joan of Arc experienced frequent episodes of auditory hallucinations associated with elementary or complex visual hallucinations (e.g., a great light or human faces). Forming, transfer and globalization of medical-pharmaceutical knowledge in South East Asian missions (17th to 18th c.) - historical dimensions and modern perspectives.

From the 17th to the 18th centuries, missionaries in Southeast Asia dedicated themselves to providing and establishing a professional medical-pharmaceutical supply for the local population and therefore explored the genuine Materia medica for easily available and affordable remedies, especially medicinal plants. In characteristic medical-pharmaceutical compendia, which can be classified as missionary pharmacopoeias, they laid down their knowledge to advise others and to guarantee a professional health care. As their knowledge often resulted from an exchange with indigenous communities, these c

Travel-Related Behaviors and Health Outcomes of Adolescents Compared with Adults on Short-Term International Service Missions.

With an increasing number of adolescents participating in international travel, little is known about travel-related behaviors and health risks in this age group. In the years 2015-2016, we conducted an anonymous, posttravel, questionnaire-based survey with the aim to compare self-reported practices and travel-related symptoms between adolescents (< 18 years old, N = 87) and adults (≥ 18 years old, N = 149) who came to our travel clinic before their humanitarian missions. They had the same pretravel health education, and traveled together to perform similar activities. In univariate analysis,

Marguerite Bottard (1822-1906), nurse under Jean-Martin Charcot, portrayed by G. Gilles de la Tourette.

Hospitals in Paris underwent considerable change at the end of the 19th century. As they moved from providing accommodation to care, their mission shifted from helping to healing. The glorification of scientific progress, as opposed to religious obscurantism, affected all of French 'Republican' society, in particular a significant part of the medical profession, led by figures such as D.M. Bourneville, former interne (house officer) under J.M. Charcot and also his publisher. Bourneville helped bring about the creation of nursing schools and the gradual replacement of religious orders by educat

Pre-travel preparation of US travelers going abroad to provide humanitarian service, Global TravEpiNet 2009-2011.

We analyzed characteristics of humanitarian service workers (HSWs) seen pre-travel at Global TravEpiNet (GTEN) practices during 2009-2011. Of 23,264 travelers, 3,663 (16%) travelers were classified as HSWs. Among HSWs, 1,269 (35%) travelers were medical workers, 1,298 (35%) travelers were non-medical service workers, and 990 (27%) travelers were missionaries. Median age was 29 years, and 63% of travelers were female. Almost one-half (49%) traveled to 1 of 10 countries; the most frequent destinations were Haiti (14%), Honduras (8%), and Kenya (6%). Over 90% of travelers were vaccinated for or c

Mansonella perstans causing symptomatic hypereosinophilia in a missionary family.

Mansonella perstans is rarely pathogenic. The rare reports of symptomatic cases, however, include severe complications. Three cases of symptomatic hypereosinophilia with multi-organ involvement are described in a missionary family returning from tropical Africa. Pathogenicity may be related to the induction of hypereosinophilia rather than direct host-parasite interactions.

[Classification of mental disorders of soldiers participating in peace missions and warfare actions].

Numerous media reports (press, radio, television) and several scientific publications on psychiatric disorders among Polish soldiers participating in peace missions in Iraq indicate that there is a serious threat caused by the disorders defined in the DSM-IV classification as: acute stress disorder (ASD) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The authors analyzed psychiatric documentation and conducted their own researches, which revealed that adjustment disorders, especially with anxiety, are the main psychiatric problem among Polish soldiers in Iraq, while incidence of ASD and PTSD is ve

[Human cutaneous myiasis: a case report].

Myiasis is a self-limiting infestion of tissues by fly larvae commonly referred as maggots. A case of cutaneous myiasis in a 61 year old woman admitted to the Department of Emergency of S. Giovanni Hospital in Rome (Italy) is reported in the present note. The patient, a religious sister, returned to Rome from a mission trip of few weeks in Edea (Cameroon, Africa), was suffering from a subclavicular furuncular skin lesion; one maggot was surgically removed and submitted for parasitological examination. Based on the maggot shape and size, the travel history and the clinical presentation, a maggo

A survey of the health of British missionaries.

The results of medical examinations carried out on 212 missionary personnel from one missionary society returning on leave to the UK are presented. The great majority of missionaries worked in developing countries. They served in 27 countries altogether and for a total of 488 person years. The commonest illnesses reported overseas were malaria (87.3 per 1000 person years at risk), diarrhoea (63.5), anxiety (63.5), depression (41.0) and giardiasis (38.9). More illnesses were reported from West Africa (698 per 1000 person years at risk) than from any other region. Ten people (4.7%) were repatria

Indian hospitals and government in the colonial Andes.

This article examines the reception of the early modern hospital among the indigenous people of the Andes under Spanish colonial rule. During the period covered by this study (sixteenth to mid-eighteenth centuries), the hospital was conceived primarily as a manifestation of the sovereign’s paternalistic concern for his subjects’ spiritual well being. Hospitals in the Spanish American colonies were organised along racial lines, and those catering to Indians were meant to complement the missionary endeavour. Besides establishing hospitals in the main urban centres, Spanish colonial legislation i

Dexmedetomidine infusion as an adjunct anesthetic for tetralogy of fallot repair during a pediatric cardiac mission trip in Jamaica: a case report.

Dexmedetomidine was used as an adjunct anesthetic for an infant with tetralogy of Fallot (TOF). who underwent complete surgical repair during a mission trip in Jamaica. Anesthetic maintenance was achieved with the concomitant use of dexmedetomidine and remifentanil infusions, as well as inhalational sevoflurane. The dexmedetomidine infusion ranged from 0.3 to 0.5 µg/kg/h and the remifentanil infusion ranged from 0.5 to 2 µg/kg/min, with end-tidal sevoflurane ranging from 0.8% to 6%. The continuous infusion of dexmedetomidine in a complex pediatric cardiac surgical patient provides sedation, de

Is operative management effective in treatment of perforated typhoid?

BACKGROUND: Salmonella typhi infection continues to be a significant problem worldwide. Patients suffering from "typhoid" in endemic regions such as West Africa often present late in the course of the disease with symptoms of malnutrition and peritonitis. Clinical peritonitis in these patients is invariably associated with perforation of the terminal ileum and purulent peritonitis. Operative intervention and its success have not been well documented. The purpose of this article is to review the experience of 1 hospital in West Africa and the efficacy of operative management of perforated intes

Mind the gap: knowledge and practice of providers treating uncomplicated malaria at public and mission health facilities, pharmacies and drug stores in Cameroon and Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: Artemisinin combination therapy (ACT) has been the first-line treatment for uncomplicated malaria in Cameroon since 2004 and Nigeria since 2005, though many febrile patients receive less effective antimalarials. Patients often rely on providers to select treatment, and interventions are needed to improve providers' practice and encourage them to adhere to clinical guidelines. METHODS: Providers' adherence to malaria treatment guidelines was examined using data collected in Cameroon and Nigeria at public and mission facilities, pharmacies and drug stores. Providers' choice of antim
