Optimizing energy-efficient grid performance: integrating electric vehicles, DSTATCOM, and renewable sources using the Hippopotamus Optimization Algorithm.

The rapid increase in renewable energy integration and electric vehicle (EV) adoption creates significant challenges for the stability and efficiency of power distribution networks. This study addresses the need for optimized placement and sizing of Electric Vehicle Charging Stations (EVCSs), photovoltaic (PV) systems, and Distribution Static Compensators (DSTATCOMs) to enhance grid performance. The motivation for this work arises from the fluctuating nature of renewable energy generation and the unpredictable demands of EV charging, which strain existing infrastructure. To address these chall

Optimal power flow of hybrid wind/solar/thermal energy integrated power systems considering renewable energy uncertainty via an enhanced weighted mean of vectors algorithm.

The rising global energy demand, along with the growth of electric power transmission and distribution systems, has intensified the need to incorporate renewable energy sources to foster sustainable development. However, achieving optimal operation within such systems poses significant challenges due to the stochastic nature of renewable energy generation. As a result, the optimal power flow (OPF) problem becomes increasingly complex when addressing the inherent uncertainty of renewable inputs. This study presents a new approach to addressing the OPF problem through the implementation of a hyb

A comprehensive study on energy management, sensitivity analysis, and inertia compliance of feed-in tariff in IEEE bus systems with grid-connected renewable energy sources.

The need to incorporate renewable energy generators (REGs) into the electrical grid has become increasingly crucial due to the push for a more sustainable environment. This study advocates an innovative strategy for optimizing inertia-integrated generation and transmission expansion planning (GTEP) to implement feed-in tariffs (FiT). The application of the GAMS CPLEX solver to the model, which tested on an IEEE 6/IEEE 16 system, reveals that using FiT results in a 12.1 % drop in system cost ($599 million to $526 million) and a 7.91 % rise in total system inertia. Sensitivity analysis highlight

Micro/nanoplastics and lithium iron phosphate at environmentally relevant dose triggers hepatic fibrosis: Unseen risks of global renewable energy.

The rapid expansion of the global renewable energy industry has led to increasing environmental release of LiFePO₄ (LFP) and polyvinyl chloride-derived micro/nanoplastics (PVC), yet their combined impacts remain largely unexplored. Here, we demonstrate that chronic co-exposure to environmentally relevant levels of PVC and LFP exerts synergistic hepatotoxicity through a gut-liver axis. Multi-omics integration reveals that co-exposure disrupts intestinal microbial homeostasis, depletes short-chain fatty acids, barrier integrity, and elevates plasma lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and pro-inflammatory c

Comprehensive review of dynamical simulation models of packed-bed systems for thermal energy storage applications in renewable power production.

The need for large-scale energy storage in the context of renewable electricity production worldwide is evident. Among the various energy storage methods, thermal energy storage stands out. It is independent of geographical location, allows high storage capacities, does not require scarce materials, and is cheaper than its direct competitors. Currently, several technologies are being intensively developed. In some of them, packed-bed systems play a central role: a heat transfer fluid heats up or releases heat from a porous solid that acts as a thermal energy reservoir. This work compiles their

Optimized frequency stabilization in hybrid renewable power grids with integrated energy storage systems using a modified fuzzy-TID controller.

This article presents several innovative methods to mitigate frequency deviations in hybrid renewable power grids (HRPGs) with high penetration of renewable energy sources (RESs). Two models of the HRPGs are considered: the first model is a two-area power grid that combines three conventional power plants and two RESs in each area, while the second model is the IEEE 39-bus system. The tie-line is connected in series with a unified power flow controller (UPFC). The first method introduces an approach in the secondary control loop (SCL), where a fuzzy logic controller is cascaded with an Integra

Are we really addressing the roadblocks to adoption of renewable and sustainable energy technologies? Total interpretive structural modeling approach.

Urban areas serve as a vital contribution to the global structural change towards renewable and sustainable energy technologies which also influence climate change. The aim of this paper is to identify the adoption roadblocks to renewable and sustainable urban energy technologies. This research has three parts: a mini-systematic literature study was conducted to identify the most prevalent roadblocks. Using total interpretive structural modeling (ISM), the relationships between the roadblocks and the source of causation were then examined. The roadblocks are classified based on their dependenc

Robust ranking of renewable energy alternatives handling uncertainty using novel hesitant bi-fuzzy MEREC-MOORA and Dombi aggregation approach.

The identification of competitive renewable energy (RE) sources often fails to account for non-technical factors, such as environmental, political, and social barriers. These considerations of RE are described in language that accommodates varying levels of hesitancy among decision-makers (DMs). This study develops a multi-criteria group decision-making (MCGDM) method using hesitant bi-fuzzy sets to capture DMs' varying degrees of hesitancy. A HBF extension of multi-objective optimization on the basis of ratio analysis is proposed, incorporating a method based on the removal effect on the crit

Learning-driven multi-timescale operation simulation and hierarchical boundary optimization for renewable-dominated energy systems under temporal and scenario uncertainties.

This paper addresses the challenge of coordinating power system operation across multiple temporal horizons under high renewable penetration and scenario uncertainty, where conventional decoupled scheduling frameworks fail to maintain operational consistency and adaptability. To overcome this limitation, we propose a learning-driven multi-timescale operation simulation and hierarchical boundary optimization framework that integrates deep sequence forecasting, reinforcement learning, and rolling model predictive control within a unified optimization structure. The framework dynamically construc

Application of modified artificial hummingbird algorithm in optimal power flow and generation capacity in power networks considering renewable energy sources.

Today's electrical power system is a complicated network that is expanding rapidly. The power transmission lines are more heavily loaded than ever before, which causes a host of problems like increased power losses, unstable voltage, and line overloads. Real and reactive power can be optimized by placing energy resources at appropriate locations. Congested networks benefit from this to reduce losses and enhance voltage profiles. Hence, the optimal power flow problem (OPF) is crucial for power system planning. As a result, electricity system operators can meet electricity demands efficiently an

A novel traveling-wave-based detection and self-healing approach for series faults in smart grids under renewable energy uncertainty.

Conventional protective devices cannot reliably detect series faults at the far end of the distribution feeder, such as open-conductor faults, downed conductor faults from the load side, and downed conductor faults from the source side when associated with high-impedance conditions. This limitation is especially challenging in the presence of distributed generation units. This paper introduces an innovative scheme for detecting series faults using traveling wave voltage measurements. This scheme identifies faults by comparing the polarities of the first-arriving voltage waves at the lateral en

In-use dissipation of technology-critical elements from vehicles and renewable energy technologies in Vienna, Austria: A public health matter?

The rollout of electric vehicles and photovoltaic panels is essential to mitigate climate change. However, they depend on technology-critical elements (TCEs), which can be harmful to human health and whose use is rapidly expanding, while recycling is lacking. While mining has received substantial attention, in-use dissipation in urban areas has so far not been assessed, for example, corrosion and abrasion of vehicle components and weather-related effects affecting thin-film photovoltaic panels. Therefore, the question arises to which extent TCEs dissipate during use and which potential non-occ
