Memantine effects on verbal memory in fragile X-associated tremor/ataxia syndrome (FXTAS): a double-blind brain potential study.

Older FMR1 premutation carriers may develop fragile X-associated tremor/ataxia syndrome (FXTAS), a neurodegenerative disorder manifesting cognitive deficits that often subsequently progress to dementia. To date, there is no specific treatment available for FXTAS. Studies have demonstrated the premutation-associated overactivation of glutamatergic receptors in neurons. Memantine, a NMDA receptor antagonist approved for treatment of Alzheimer's disease, thus was tested in the first placebo-controlled, double-blind, randomized clinical trial in FXTAS. Prior event-related brain potential (ERP) stu

Response Priming Accounts for Self-Prioritization Effects.

Self-prioritization effects found in label-shape matching tasks have been demonstrated extensively. Participants are faster to match label-shape label-shape stimuli against a prelearned mapping, the more self-related the label is. The effect is thought to be driven by special cognitive treatment, saliency, or attentional prioritization of self-referential stimuli. However, the exact underlying mechanism remains elusive. We propose an alternative explanation, namely that self-related labels facilitate matching performance by inducing the so-called self-positivity bias (people tend to represent

Neural correlates of auditory sensory memory dynamics in the aging brain.

The auditory system allows us to monitor background environmental sound patterns and recognize deviations that may indicate opportunities or threats. The mismatch negativity and P3a potentials have generators in the auditory and inferior frontal cortex and index expected sound patterns (standards) and any aberrations (deviants). The mismatch negativity and P3a waveforms show increased positivity for consecutive standards and deviants preceded by more standards. We hypothesized attenuated repetition effects in older participants, potentially because of differences in prefrontal functions. Young

The involvement of left inferior frontal and middle temporal cortices in word production unveiled by greater facilitation effects following brain damage.

In stroke-induced aphasia, left hemispheric lesions generally disturb the word production network. The left inferior frontal gyrus (LIFG) and the left middle temporal gyrus (LMTG) are involved in word production, but their respective contribution remains ambiguous. Previous investigations have largely focused on semantic interference to gather information about word production. Here we assessed the sensitivity of twenty-five aphasic speakers with either LIFG or LMTG lesions and matched controls to both semantic facilitation and interference in word production using the picture-word (PWP) and t

The effects of emotion priming on visual search in socially anxious adults.

This study examined the effects of emotion priming on visual search in participants characterised for different levels of social anxiety. Participants were primed with five facial emotions (angry, fear, happy, neutral, and surprised) and one scrambled face immediately prior to visual search trials involving finding a slanted coloured line amongst distractors, as reaction times and accuracy to target detection were recorded. Results suggest that for individuals low in social anxiety, being primed with an angry, surprised, or fearful face facilitated visual search compared to being primed with s

Multi-level response coding in stimulus-response bindings: Irrelevant distractors retrieve both semantic and motor response codes.

Stimulus-response (S-R) episodes are formed whenever a response is executed in close temporal proximity to a stimulus. Subsequent stimulus repetition will retrieve the episode from memory, reactivating the previous response. Whereas many research findings attest to the flexibility of representing stimulus features, only little is known about the way responses are coded within transient S-R episodes, that is, whether the retrieved response is represented in terms of specific motor codes, abstract/semantic codes, or both. To differentiate between these accounts, we used an approach/avoidance tas

Comparison of polymerase chain reaction and pulsed-field gel electrophoresis for the epidemiological typing of Alcaligenes xylosoxidans subsp. xylosoxidans in a burn unit.

Eighteen isolates of Alcaligenes xylosoxidans subsp. xylosoxidans were collected from clinical specimens of 15 patients in a burn unit and a plastic surgery ward over a 16-month period. Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) were compared for the epidemiologic typing of these 18 isolates and fifteen epidemiologically unrelated strains. These 18 isolates demonstrated an identical fingerprint pattern and were easily distinguished from the 15 epidemiologically unrelated strains by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis typing and both enterobacterial repetitive intergenic

Repetition effects in human ERPs to faces.

In the present paper, we review research conducted over the past 25 years addressing the effects of repeating various kinds of information in faces (e.g., pictorial, spatial configural, identity, semantic) on different components in human event-related brain potentials (ERPs). This body of evidence suggests that several ERP components are systematically linked to different functional components of face identity processing. Specifically, we argue (1) that repetition of the category of faces (categorical adaptation) strongly affects the occipitotemporal N170 amplitude, which is systematically su

Syntactic priming in children with reading difficulties: evidence from abstract and lexically mediated effects.

INTRODUCTION: Children with reading disabilities (RD) often exhibit sentence processing difficulties, yet the underlying source of these difficulties remains debated. One account attributes them to delayed development of syntactic representations due to phonological deficits, whereas another proposes that syntactic knowledge is largely preserved but its use is constrained by limitations in domain-general processing resources. The present study used a structural priming paradigm to examine sensitivity to abstract syntactic structure and lexical overlap in children with reading difficulties (RD)

Orthographic similarity: the case of "reversed anagrams".

How orthographically similar are words such as paws and swap, flow and wolf, or live and evil? According to the letter position coding schemes used in models of visual word recognition, these reversed anagrams are considered to be less similar than words that share letters in the same absolute or relative positions (such as home and hose or plan and lane). Therefore, reversed anagrams should not produce the standard orthographic similarity effects found using substitution neighbors (e.g., home, hose). Simulations using the spatial coding model (Davis, Psychological Review 117, 713-758, 2010),

Familiarity and priming are mediated by overlapping neural substrates.

Explicit memory is widely assumed to reflect the conscious processes of recollection and familiarity. However, familiarity has been hypothesized to be supported by nonconscious processing. In the present functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) experiment, we assessed whether familiarity is mediated by some of the same regions that mediate repetition priming, a form of nonconscious memory. Participants completed an implicit (indirect) memory task and an explicit (direct) memory task during fMRI. During phase I of each task, participants viewed novel abstract shapes with internal colored or

Effects of the semantic context on the processing of careful and casual speech.

Listeners need contextual information to recognize the highly reduced word pronunciation variants that frequently occur in casual speech. Especially, semantically related words preceding them may be informative. It is unclear, however, whether listeners also benefit from preceding semantically related words when these are reduced as well, which is typically the case in casual speech. The present study reports two experiments examining how semantic priming modulates the semantic and phonological processing of target words in both carefully and casually articulated sentences. In a word repetitio

Identifying task-general effects of stimulus familiarity in the parietal memory network.

Studies of human memory have implicated a "parietal memory network" in the recognition of familiar stimuli. However, the automatic vs. top-down nature of information processing within this network is not yet understood. If the network processes stimuli automatically, one can expect repetition-related changes both when familiarity is central to an ongoing task and when it is task-irrelevant. Here, we tested this prediction in a group of 40 human subjects using fMRI. Subjects initially named 100 objects aloud in the scanner. They then repeated the same task with novel and previously-named object

Contextual influences on sentence repetition as a tool for the identification of language impairment in Grade 3 Sepedi-English bilinguals: A case against bilingual norms.

BACKGROUND: Specific language impairment (SLI) is difficult to identify because it is a subtle linguistic difficulty, and there are a few measures available to differentiate between typical and atypical language development in bilinguals. Sentence repetition (SR) has strong theoretical foundations and research evidence as a valid tool for the identification of SLI in bilinguals. OBJECTIVE: This study assessed the value of SR using peer group comparisons to identify Sepedi-English bilingual children at the risk of SLI. METHOD: One hundred and two Grade 3 learners in three different contexts o

Location negative priming effects in children with developmental dyslexia: An event-related potential study.

As the reading process is inseparable from working memory, inhibition, and other higher cognitive processes, the deep cognitive processing defects that are associated with dyslexia may be due to defective distraction inhibition systems. In this study, we used event-related potential technology to explore the source of negative priming effects in children with developmental dyslexia and in a group of healthy children for comparison. We found that the changes in the average response times in the negative priming and control conditions were consistent across the two groups, while the negative pri

Do deficits in the magnocellular priming underlie visual derealization phenomena? Preliminary neurophysiological and self-report results in first-episode schizophrenia patients.

BACKGROUND: Early visual impairments probably partially caused by impaired interactions between magnocellular (M) and parvocellular (P) pathways (M priming deficit), and disturbances of basic self-awareness or self-disorders (SDs) are core features of schizophrenia. The relationships between these features have not yet been studied. We hypothesized that the M priming was impaired in first-episode patients and that this deficit was associated with visual aspects of SDs. AIM: To investigate early visual processing in a sample of first-episode schizophrenia patients and to explore the relationsh

Priming of courageous behavior: contrast effects in spider fearful women.

OBJECTIVE: Recently, researchers have called for therapeutic applications of behavioral primes (Shalev & Bargh, 2011). We evaluated whether courageous approach behavior might be facilitated through priming in a sample of spider fearful women. METHOD: Undergraduate student women reporting elevated spider fear (N = 33, Age mean = 18.88) were recruited for this study. Participants completed self-report measures of spider fear and dispositional courage. They then completed either a courage or neutral word search prime, which was followed by a behavioral approach task involving a tarantula. RESUL

Implicit memory function in fibromyalgia syndrome.

The study investigated implicit memory function in fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) and its association with clinical parameters. Implicit memory refers to the influence of past experience on current behavior without conscious awareness of these experiences. Eighteen FMS patients and 25 healthy individuals accomplished a word-stem completion task. As possible factors mediating the expected impairment, pain severity, emotional disorders, and medication were taken into account. The patients displayed markedly reduced task performance and higher levels of depression and anxiety. Among the clinical fea

Advantage of Handwriting Over Typing on Learning Words: Evidence From an N400 Event-Related Potential Index.

The growing implementation of digital education comes with an increased need to understand the impact of digital tools on learning. Previous behavioral studies have shown that handwriting on paper is more effective for learning than typing on a keyboard. However, the impact of writing with a digital pen on a tablet remains to be clarified. In the present study, we compared learning by handwriting with an ink pen on paper, handwriting with a digital pen on a tablet, and typing on a keyboard. Behavioral and electroencephalographic indices were measured immediately after learning with each writin

Age-related differences in the lexical priming effect can be predominantly attributed to differences in response bias.

Age-related declines in visual perception challenge older adults' ability to locate and identify objects in noisy (e.g., fog, glare, inadequate lighting) or cluttered visual environments. To compensate, older adults often increase reliance on contextual information, which could be helpful, but may also lead to increased risk for "false seeing"-reporting expected objects based on contextual information rather than those actually presented-a phenomenon that Jacoby et al. (2012) observed in older adults under challenging viewing conditions. However, it remains unaddressed whether such false seein
