A Community-Based Reproductive Health Care Model Effectively Enhances Reproductive Health Among Lahu Women in Northern Thailand.

BACKGROUND: Inadequate and delayed access to sexual and reproductive health services among the Hill Tribe population can be attributed to the intersection of socioeconomic challenges and distinct cultural practices. To address this limitation and create a tailored model capable of addressing it, this study assesses the effectiveness of the Community-Based Reproductive Health Care Model (CRHC) in enhancing reproductive health knowledge, attitudes, and practices among Lahu women, a prominent hill tribe population in Northern Thailand. METHODS: Implementing the CRHC model includes training progr

COVID-19 and female reproductive health: pathophysiological mechanisms and clinical reproductive outcomes.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), has raised important concerns regarding its potential effects on female reproductive health. This review aimed to synthesize current evidence on the biological mechanisms, clinical manifestations, ovarian reserve, fertility potential, and assisted reproductive technology (ART) outcomes associated with COVID-19. A comprehensive literature search of PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar was conducted for studies published between January 2020 and March 2026. Current e

Thyroid-reproductive axis interplay: immunological mechanisms and implications for female reproductive health.

Thyroid dysfunction is a common endocrine disease among women of childbearing age, which seriously affects reproductive health. From an immunological perspective, this in-depth analysis clarifies the complex relationship between thyroid function and female reproduction. We studied the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis regulation by thyroid hormones through direct and indirect mechanisms, including metabolic mediators such as prolactin and leptin. Recent studies have shown that inflammatory cytokines (IL-1α, IL-1β, IL-6, IFN-γ, and TNF-α) severely disrupt the production pathways of thyroid ho

Special Issue: New Horizons in HIV and Reproductive Health Research: HIV Acquisition and Reproductive Health in Key Populations.

Despite tremendous scientific breakthroughs in the prevention of HIV in the past decade, considerable gaps in knowledge persist regarding biologic vulnerabilities among the key populations who bear the greatest burden of the global HIV pandemic. Key conditions and subgroups with increased susceptibility to HIV include transgender and gender diverse persons and cisgender women-specifically during pregnancy, those who are survivors of sexual violence and female sex workers. Across groups, increased vulnerability to HIV is related to both increased physiologic susceptibility as well as synergisti

Infectious vaginitis among women seeking reproductive health services at a sexual and reproductive health facility in Kampala, Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Infectious vaginitis is one of the most prevalent conditions affecting women of reproductive age with significant clinical consequences. Bacterial vaginosis (BV), vulvo-vaginal candidiasis (VVC), and trichomoniasis (TV) are the main etiologies. Unfortunately, there is limited data on the prevalence and associated risk factors, especially in sub-saharan Africa. This study, thus, determined the prevalence and risk factors of infectious vaginitis among women seeking reproductive health services at a Marie-stopes health facility in urban areas of Kampala, Uganda. METHODS: A cross-sect

Is the presence of an adolescent reproductive health corner associated with adolescent knowledge and use of reproductive health services in Ghana?

OBJECTIVE: This study assessed the association between the presence of an adolescent reproductive health corner and adolescents' knowledge and use of reproductive health services (RHS) in Ghana. METHODS: A survey was administered in May-June 2018 to 392 adolescents in Junior High Schools within two communities in the Asunafo South District. One community had an adolescent reproductive health corner and the other did not. Chi-square test and binary logistic regression were used to assess the associations between the presence of the corner and adolescents' knowledge and use of RHS. RESULTS: Af

Reproductive toxicity of endosulfan: Mechanisms and impacts on female and male reproductive health.

Endosulfan is a broad-spectrum organochlorine pesticide widely used in many developing countries despite its high toxicity potential. Endosulfan, listed as potent endocrine-disrupting chemical and xenoestrogen, gains importance for its potential to cause reproductive and developmental dysfunction. In females, endosulfan disrupts ovarian and uterine development, leading to infertility, miscarriage, and developmental toxicity. It acts by mimicking estrogen and interferes with estrogen and androgen pathways, impacting hormone regulation and gene expression, including estrogen receptor α (ERα) and

Reproduction, risk and reality: family planning and reproductive health in northern Vietnam.

In collaboration with the National Committee for Population and Family Planning, a study was conducted in 1994 in two Vietnamese communes to provide community level information on women's reproductive health and behaviors. A survey of 504 rural and 523 urban women collected five-year histories of reproduction, contraception, abortion and symptoms of Reproductive Tract Infections (RTI). This analysis focuses on the relationships between women's individual characteristics, use of family planning and abortion, and reported RTI symptoms. The findings reveal that IUDs do not raise women's likelihoo

Deciphering the role of female reproductive tract microbiome in reproductive health: a review.

Relevant studies increasingly indicate that female reproductive health is confronted with substantial challenges. Emerging research has revealed that the microbiome interacts with the anatomy, histology, and immunity of the female reproductive tract, which are the cornerstone of maintaining female reproductive health and preventing adverse pregnancy outcomes. Currently, the precise mechanisms underlying their interaction and impact on physiological functions of the reproductive tract remain elusive, constituting a prominent area of investigation within the field of female reproductive tract mi

Clinical practice guidelines for reproductive health care.

Amidst the rapidly changing landscape of diagnosis and management in reproductive medicine, it has become increasingly difficult to evaluate the usefulness of many clinical practices. Clinical practice guidelines are a way to incorporate the best evidence-based research with clinical experience, cost-effectiveness, and patient demands. However, there may be problems with the development, maintenance, and implementation of such guidelines. This series of papers describes existing guidelines in the American Society for Reproductive Medicine and internationally and provides clinician comments on

Health Maintenance for Women of Reproductive Age.

Health maintenance for women of reproductive age includes counseling and screening tests that have been demonstrated to prevent disease and improve health. This article focuses mainly on conditions that are more common in women or have a unique impact on female patients. Family physicians should be familiar with evidence-based recommendations for contraception and preconception care and should consider screening patients for pregnancy intention. The American Academy of Family Physicians recommends against screening pelvic examinations in asymptomatic women; the U.S. Preventive Services Task Fo

Endocrine-disrupting chemicals and male reproductive health.

BACKGROUND: A number of different types of endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) including bisphenol A, phthalates, pesticides, and other environmental chemicals have been shown to adversely impact upon male reproductive health. Understanding the potential effects of EDCs on male reproductive health may enable the development of novel treatments and early prevention of the effects of EDCs on male infertility and their potential long-term sequelae. This review critically evaluates the research performed in this area and explores potential harmful effects of EDCs in animals and humans, including

Reproductive health care in Catholic-owned hospitals.

Mergers that affiliate a hospital with a Catholic owner, network, or system reduce the set of possible reproductive medical procedures since Catholic hospitals have strict prohibitions on contraception. Using changes in ownership of hospitals, we find that Catholic hospitals reduce the per bed rates of tubal ligations by 31%, whereas there is no significant change in related permitted procedures such as Caesarian sections. However, across a variety of measures, we find minimal overall welfare reductions. Still, fewer tubal ligations increase the risk of unintended pregnancies across the United

Immunosuppression and Reproductive Health After Kidney Transplantation.

Following successful kidney transplantation, recipients usually regain fertility. Post-engraftment pregnancies should be planned and the teratogenic mycophenolic acid should be replaced with azathioprine before conception. To avoid unintentional pregnancies, pre-conception counseling is mandatory in women of reproductive age who are scheduled for a kidney transplant. Counseling should be repeated after transplantation. Female recipients should receive advice to use long-acting reversible contraception and avoid pregnancy for a minimum of 1 year following transplantation. Conception should be d

Management of reproductive health after cardiac transplantation.

Pregnancy after cardiac transplantation poses immense challenges. Maternal risks include hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, rejection, and failure of the cardiac allograft that may lead to death. Fetal risks include potential teratogenic effects of immunosuppression and prematurity. Because of the high-risk nature of pregnancy in a heart transplant patient, management of reproductive health after cardiac transplantation should include preconception counseling to all women in the reproductive age group before and after cardiac transplantation. Reliable contraception is vital as nearly half of

Reproductive health of female childhood cancer survivors.

Current treatment schemes of childhood cancer are usually effective enough to enable successful management of the disease. With the high rates of survival, another problem arises because patients often suffer much later from side effects of the toxic therapy. A common complication caused by cancer treatment is impairment of the female reproductive system including dysfunction of the hypothalamus and hypophysis, the killing of gonadal cells, and uterine injury. This may lead to altered pubertal timing, gonadotropin insufficiency or deficiency, acute ovarian failure, premature ovarian insufficie
