OBJECTIVE: This study explores socioecological factors facilitating the sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) experiences of migrant and refugee youth (MRY) in Greater Western Sydney, Australia. MRY may be at higher risk for poorer SRH outcomes due to cultural, linguistic, and systemic barriers.
METHODS: Using participatory action research, 17 focus groups were conducted with 87 MRY aged 15-29 from diverse cultural backgrounds. Data were analysed thematically, using socioecological framework.
RESULTS: Key facilitators of MRY's SRHR were identified at the microsystem and exosystem

Women's control over their own bodies and reproduction is a fundamental prerequisite to the achievement of sexual and reproductive health and rights. A woman's ability to terminate an unwanted pregnancy has been seen as the exercise of her reproductive rights. This study reports on interviews with 15 women in rural South India who had a medical abortion. It examines the circumstances under which they chose to have an abortion and their perspectives on medical abortion. Women in this study decided to have an abortion when multiple factors like lack of spousal support for child care or contracep

Women's Link Worldwide developed a test to determine when an environment is conducive to social change through strategic litigation. We first present our understanding of strategic litigation, and then discuss four conditions for successful and sustainable change using strategic litigation: (1) an existing rights framework; (2) an independent and knowledgeable judiciary; (3) civil society organizations with the capacity to frame social problems as rights violations and to litigate; and (4) a network able to support and leverage the opportunities presented by litigation. Next, we present exampl

This article explores the complexities of the interaction between politics, religion and gender equality in contemporary Mexico, by analysing recent developments in public debate, legal changes and implementation of government policies in two areas: 1) the inclusion of emergency contraception in public health services in 2004; and 2) the decriminalisation of abortion in Mexico City in 2008, which was followed by a massive campaign to re-criminalise abortion in the federal states. Three main findings emerge from our analysis: first, that women's sexual and reproductive autonomy has become an is

This article focuses on the contraceptive and reproductive experiences and needs of people living with HIV and on public health services' responses to them in Argentina. Data collected through a national survey amongst people living with HIV (N=841) and semi-structured interviews (N=89) explored the perspectives of both health-care users and HIV/AIDS program coordinators and providers. The survey revealed that 55% of women and 30% of men had had children after their HIV diagnosis and that half of those pregnancies had been unintended. At the time of the survey in 2006, 73% of men and 64% of wo

INTRODUCTION: Deterioration of economic conditions, societal uncertainty, and negative expectations about the future have all been linked to delayed childbearing plans. All these negative circumstances can be related to epidemiological stress, which in turn becomes one of the culprits for changes in fertility plans. This study aims to analyze the individual factors that decrease the probability of wanting to have children after exposure to epidemiological stress from the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic.
METHODS: Recruitment was conducted between April and July 2021. Participants

OBJECTIVES: Although family planning in China has changed gradually since 1994, there are few studies about family planning and women's reproductive rights. The main objective of this study was to examine awareness of sexual and reproductive healthcare rights (SRHCRs), and learn how factors related to family planning influence awareness of SRHCRs among married women of reproductive age in China.
METHODS AND PARTICIPANTS: Inner Mongolia, Chongqing, Guangdong and Henan were selected for the study, and a total of 2504 married women of reproductive age were recruited. A self-administered anonymou

BACKGROUND: Women's sexual and reproductive rights are crucial for achieving gender equality and promoting women's rights. Across East Africa, there are limited studies about husbands' knowledge of their partner's reproductive rights and their associated factors. Hence, this study aimed to assess husbands' knowledge of partners' reproductive health rights and associated factors in Central Ethiopia.
METHODS: A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted from March 15 to April 30, 2023, using multi-stage stratified sampling. A structured, interviewer-administered questionnaire was utili

Women with intellectual disabilities (WIDs) are entitled to the rights to marriage and reproduction under Chinese law. However, Chinese marriage and reproduction regimes have imposed restrictions on their right to marry that limit the exercise of their reproductive rights. Marrying WIDs has become a popular choice for men in rural areas. Although in China's Civil Code, the legislature has repealed the prior requirement of a medical examination for marriage registration, the exercise of rights to marriage and reproduction by WIDs is still restricted. China has not fully implemented equal rights

BACKGROUND: While female sex workers (FSWs) face a high burden of violence and criminalisation, coupled with low access to safe, non-coercive care, little is known about such experiences among FSWs in conflict-affected settings, particularly as they relate to sexual and reproductive health (SRH) and rights. We explored factors associated with lifetime abortions among FSWs in northern Uganda; and separately modelled the independent effect of lifetime exposures to incarceration and living in internally displaced persons (IDP) camps on coerced and unsafe abortions.
METHODS: Analyses are based on

INTRODUCTION: Adolescents and young people aged 10-24 years comprise 32% of the total population of Pakistan. Adolescents and young people are a heterogeneous group-in different stages of development, living in different circumstances and with differing and changing needs. Neglect of specific adolescents' sexual and reproductive health (SRH) needs can pose serious challenges and affect physical and mental health, future employment, economic well-being and adolescents' ability to reach their full potential. Evidence suggests that adolescents in Pakistan have poor access to SRH services, includi

BACKGROUND: Young people in Uganda face various sexual and reproductive health risks, especially those living in urban slums. The aim of this study was to examine factors associated with comprehensive categories of sexual and reproductive health, including sexual behaviours; sexual education and access to contraceptive services; family planning; prevention of STDs; sexual consent as a right; gender based violence; as well as HIV testing, counselling, disclosure and support.
METHODS: The study was cross-sectional in design and was carried out in July 2014 in Makindye and Nakawa Divisions of Ka

The 1994 International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) in Cairo marked a paradigm shift that took family planning out of a population control context and into the broader context of sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR). While progress has been made with increased access to family planning and a decrease in maternal deaths, we have not seen practical results for the majority of women and girls worldwide, who still experience unacceptably high rates of maternal deaths, unmet contraceptive needs and HIV infections. Three of the compromises made by governments at Cairo

BACKGROUND: Evidence on the sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) of migrants is lacking globally. We describe SRHR healthcare resource use and long-acting reversible contraceptives (LARCs) prescriptions for migrant versus non-migrant women attending primary care in England (2009-2018).
METHODS: This population-based observational cohort study, using Clinical Practice Research Datalink (CPRD) GOLD, included females living in England aged 15 to 49. Migration was defined using a validated codelist. Rates per 100 person years at risk (pyar) and adjusted rate ratios (RRs) were measured

BACKGROUND: In 2023, there were 9·9 million births among adolescents aged 15-19 years in low-income and middle-income countries, with an estimated half of those births unintended. Cameroon, Ghana, Malawi, Nepal, and Rwanda stand out as exemplar countries experiencing some of the largest declines in adolescent fertility (ie, the demographic concept of livebirths per woman) globally between 2000 and 2023 relative to countries with similar socioeconomic change during this period. We aimed to examine how these five countries reduced adolescent pregnancy by decomposing declines into key determinant

Sub-Saharan Africa is faced with triple challenges of high vulnerability to climate change impacts, high levels of inequality, and poor sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) outcomes. Climate change impacts can worsen the SRHR situation for high-risk groups such as women, children, adolescent girls, and people living with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). This scoping review examined interventions addressing the impacts of climate change on SRHR in the region to identify barriers to and facilitators of effective integration. The review followed Arksey and O'Malley's framework for

INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to provide an overview of the research landscape and to identify research gaps linking climate change events and sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs), where the negative impacts of climate change are most severe.
METHODS: We conducted a scoping review to map research studies that link climate change events or factors and SRHR aspects in LMICs. We performed a structured literature search across six databases to identify relevant peer-reviewed publications between January 1994 and 6 September 2023. The

BACKGROUND: Sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) education is particularly important in wartime Ukraine, where young people face disrupted access to services, persistent socio-cultural taboos, and increased vulnerability related to conflict. However, little is known about how Ukrainian students and future professionals understand and make sense of SRHR.
OBJECTIVE: This study explored how SRHR was conceptualised in pre-course written responses and articulated in post-course focus group reflections, and how these framings related to students' future professional readiness in wartime
