Improving physiological monitoring and reporting standards in preclinical stroke research.

Physiological factors, such as cerebral blood flow, blood pressure, respiratory rate, and body temperature are critical determinants of ischemic stroke pathophysiology, infarct development, and overall outcomes, and vice versa. However, despite long-standing guidelines recommending rigorous monitoring of key physiological factors, this aspect is not always incorporated into experimental designs and is generally underreported. Further, even when collected it is not always clear whether the data are integrated into the interpretation of results, potentially affecting translation. This review out

Evaluation of Reporting of Race and Ethnicity in Hospice and Palliative Care Research.

The disproportionate impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on marginalized communities due to structural racism has led to an increased focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion in medical literature. To assess pre-pandemic racial and ethnic representation among subjects in palliative care research, we examined the reporting of race and ethnicity in research presented at the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine and Hospice and Palliative Nurses Association State of the Science (SOS) plenary (2004-2019), as these articles frequently influence patient care and clinical practice. There w

Patient-reported outcome measures in prostate research: a scoping review.

OBJECTIVES: To summarise how patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) are used in prostate research, specifically in the 10 years after the 2010 CONsolidated Standards Of Reporting Trials (CONSORT) guidelines were introduced. METHODS: The search was focussed on randomised controlled trials (RCTs) reporting in the top 15 journals in oncology, urology, and medicine, during 2011-2020 and identified through PubMed®. For each article the following items were identified: the condition being treated, the intervention(s) of interest, the study design, the specific PROM(s) used, when they were includ

Methodological issues in visible LED therapy dermatological research and reporting.

BACKGROUND: The advent of mass-market Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) has seen considerable interest in potential dermatological applications of LED light photobiomodulation (PBM) for a range of conditions, with a thriving market for direct-to-consumer LED treatments, including red light, blue light, and yellow light wavelengths. Evidence of efficacy is however mixed, and studies report a wide range of irradiances and wavelengths as well as outcome measures, rendering interpretation, comparison, and even efficacy evaluation prohibitive and impeding evidence synthesis. METHODS: This work establis

Research reporting in cubital tunnel syndrome studies: an analysis of the literature.

PURPOSE: There is a strong need for a set of consensus outcomes to be utilized for future studies on cubital tunnel syndrome. The goal was to assess the outcome measures utilized in the cubital tunnel syndrome literature as a way of measuring popularity/acceptability and then to perform a literature review for the most commonly used outcomes. METHODS: A literature search was performed using the pubmed.gov database and Medical Subject Headings (MeSH). For each article, the following data were abstracted: study type, motor outcome(s), sensory outcome(s), composite outcome(s), patient-reported o

A Content Analysis of Self-Reported Financial Relationships in Biomedical Research.

INTRODUCTION: Financial conflicts of interest (fCOI) present well documented risks to the integrity of biomedical research. However, few studies differentiate among fCOI types in their analyses, and those that do tend to use preexisting taxonomies for fCOI identification. Research on fCOI would benefit from an empirically-derived taxonomy of self-reported fCOI and data on fCOI type and payor prevalence. METHODS: We conducted a content analysis of 6,165 individual self-reported relationships from COI statements distributed across 378 articles indexed with PubMed. Two coders used an iterative c

Electronic Patient Reported Outcomes for Miscarriage Research in Tommy's Net.

UNLABELLED: The Tommy's National Centre for Miscarriage Research aims to support the diagnosis and treatment for couples suffering from recurrent miscarriage. Tommy's Net is an electronic data gathering tool, collecting miscarriage data and links with hospital Clinical Information System databases. The gathering of patient reported data is an important aspect, especially as data relating to pregnancy and miscarriage events are often left unreported. METHODS: Both traditional paper-based and electronic patient reported outcome (ePRO) solutions have been explored to improve response rates, mini

Is Ross Syndrome a New Type of Synucleinopathy? A Brief Research Report.

Ross syndrome (RS) is a rare peripheral autonomic system disorder characterized by tonic pupil, hyporeflexia, and segmental anhidrosis. Neuropathological studies show that RS results from the selective cholinergic nerve degeneration. However, the cause and underlying mechanisms are largely unknown. Here, we show α-synuclein accumulation in the autonomic nerve terminals in the lesser curvature of stomach of patients with RS. In addition, immunohistochemical findings demonstrate that a dominant degeneration of cholinergic fibers is exhibited in patients with RS, while main degeneration of adrene

Minimum reporting standards for copers in chronic ankle instability research.

Lateral ankle sprains (LASs) are among the most common sports-related injuries and a high percentage of individuals who sprain their ankle go on to develop chronic ankle instability (CAI). The condition of CAI is often classified as having pain, loss of function, and a restriction of, or failure to, return to levels of previous activity. Historically, uninjured healthy controls are used as a comparison group to study the biomechanical and neuromuscular consequences of CAI. However, this model is not ideal to determine why a portion of the population experiencing an ankle sprain does not recove

Use of patient-reported outcome measures in foot and ankle research.

BACKGROUND: In the orthopaedic literature, there is a wide range of clinical outcome measurement tools that have been used in evaluating foot and ankle procedures, disorders, and outcomes, with no broadly accepted consensus as to which tools are preferred. The purpose of this study was to determine the frequency and distribution of the various outcome instruments used in the foot and ankle literature, and to identify trends for use of these instruments over time. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review of all original clinical articles reporting on foot and/or ankle topics in six orthopaedi

The potential research impact of patient reported outcomes on osteogenesis imperfecta.

BACKGROUND: Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is an inherited connective tissue disorder with many phenotypic presentations ranging from mild to severe. It is often called "brittle bone disease." Treatment consists of physical therapy, surgical interventions, medications and, in some cases, experimental therapies. Because treatment is not standardized and is often experimental, information on the success of different methods is usually not available or well documented. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: We therefore asked if social networking can make OI patients' lives better. How would a bone disorder communit

The identification and reporting of physical abuse by physicians: a review and implications for research.

Identification and reporting of possible cases of child physical abuse are critical precursors to intervention with maltreating families. Professionals from a variety of disciplines are mandated to report suspected cases of child maltreatment. Unfortunately, not all physically abused children are identified or reported. This paper reviews the literature that has examined factors that may influence the identification and reporting of physical abuse by physicians. The literature review is preceded by an overview of the multistep, multibehavior process of identification and reporting. The factors

Report on the 1986 A.S.P.E.N. Research Workshop on selenium in clinical nutrition.

Selenium in human nutrition was the theme of the 1986 Research Workshop of the American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition. At the workshop, evidence for the nutritional essentiality of selenium to humans was reviewed, and it was concluded that Keshan disease, the cardiomyopathy of children and young women described in China, is now firmly linked to selenium deficiency, although other factors may be involved. Selenium metabolism and techniques for assessing selenium status also received attention at the workshop. A measurement of blood selenium levels was accepted, in general, as a v

How to build a framework to establish a patient research partner network in rheumatology research: a report of a 2-year implementation project.

BACKGROUND: Patient research partners (PRPs) are people living with a relevant disease who actively contribute to research. Their contribution is beneficial for any research project. Although the inclusion of PRPs in rheumatology research is increasingly recommended, its practical implementation, particularly in translational research, remains limited . Enhancing PRP engagement requires a clear understanding of the necessary steps. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to show steps to achieve successful collaboration between PRPs and researchers in clinical and transitional research in rheumatology. M
