Characteristics and unmet care needs of unbefriended residents in long-term care: a qualitative interview study.

Objectives: This study explored the impact of being 'unbefriended' for residents in Canadian long-term care (LTC) homes. Residents are 'unbefriended' if they lack decision-making capacity and family or friends to act as their legal representative. Research suggests that unbefriended individuals may have unmet needs and experience poor quality of care due to their limited social support. Our specific objectives were to identify resident characteristics, their unmet care needs, and implications for quality of care and quality of life. Methods: We conducted semi-structured interviews with 39 LTC s

[Demographic Characteristics of Foreign Residents in Japan; Child Maltreatment and Language Problems in Child Protection Services].

In this study, we examined the changes in the demographic characteristics of foreign residents in Japan (FRJ) and the current status of FRJ from a global health perspective. We also considered child maltreatment that occurred in FRJ families and language problems in child welfare. Japan's official statistics in the end of 2017 indicated that there were more than 2.56 million FRJ from over 190 countries. This population was diverse with heterogeneous characteristics, such as age structure, dwelling place, marital status, and childbirth. At the end of 2017, there were 219,982 FRJ children aged 0

The Association Between Characteristics of Care Environments and Apathy in Residents With Dementia in Long-term Care Facilities.

PURPOSE: Apathy is highly prevalent in dementia but often overlooked. Environment-based interventions have demonstrated positive impact on apathy, yet, influential environmental components are largely understudied. This study examined the relationship between care environments and apathy in long-term care residents with dementia. DESIGN AND METHODS: This study was exploratory and employed a descriptive and repeated observation design. A sample of 40 was selected from a parent study with 185 participants from 28 facilities. Three videos from each participant were coded to measure apathy and en

Relationship of health and demographic characteristics to Mini-Mental State examination score among community residents.

Mini-Mental State findings from an age 60+ random community sample (N = 1681) indicate that score is related to education, age and race (but not sex) and to functional status, but not to selected aspects of physical or mental health. Adjustment for demographic characteristics, particularly education, is recommended lest cognitive impairment be overestimated.

Tissue-Resident Memory-Like CD8+ T Cells Exhibit Heterogeneous Characteristics in Tuberculous Pleural Effusion.

Tissue-resident memory T (TRM) cells are well known to play critical roles in peripheral tissues during virus infection and tumor immunology. Our previous studies indicated that CD69+CD4+ and CD69+CD8+ T cells in tuberculous pleural effusion (TPE) were antigen-specific memory T cells. However, the phenotypical and functional characteristics of CD8+ TRM cells in tuberculosis remain unknown. We found that CD103+CD8+ T cells were the predominant subset of CD103+ lymphocytes in TPE; both CD103 and CD69 expressed on memory CD8+ T cells from TPE were significantly increased compared with those from

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: prevalence, characteristics, and pharmacologic treatment in nursing home residents with cognitive impairment.

BACKGROUND: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is prevalent in nursing home residents. National and international guidelines exist for management of COPD; however, little is known about "real-world" management of COPD in this population. Nursing home patients with significant cognitive impairment may have difficulty utilizing handheld device (HHD) formulations of respiratory medications and may be clinically appropriate candidates for nebulized therapy. OBJECTIVES: To determine (a) the prevalence, clinical characteristics, and treatment of patients with a diagnosis of "emphysema/COP

Loa loa infection in temporary residents of endemic regions: recognition of a hyperresponsive syndrome with characteristic clinical manifestations.

Loiasis in residents of endemic areas is generally manifested by microfilaremia, episodic angioedema, periocular migration of adult worms, modest eosinophilia, and variable antibody levels. In 20 temporary residents who acquired loiasis in West Africa, however, the clinical presentations were markedly different. Only three of the 20 had detectable microfilaremia. Furthermore, these patients often showed a state of marked immunological hyperresponsiveness manifested by very high titers of antibody to filariae, increased levels of serum IgE, and profound hypereosinophilia--to levels greater than

Demographic and economic characteristics of residents of four subsidized housing facilities in Nashville, TN, and their preferences for co-located services.

INTRODUCTION: Permanent supportive housing, which combines stable housing with tailored wraparound services, has emerged as a critical intervention to combat chronic homelessness and promote health equity. This study focuses on Nashville, Tennessee, an area marked by rapid growth, poverty, and housing instability, to better understand the characteristics and service needs of residents in subsidized housing. METHODS: A cross-sectional study (2023-2025) recruited 140 residents from four subsidized housing facilities using randomized selection. We administered semi-structured questionnaires asse

Profiles of Permanent Supportive Housing Residents Related to Their Housing Conditions, Service Use, and Associated Sociodemographic and Clinical Characteristics.

As permanent supportive housing (PSH) is the main strategy promoted to reduce homelessness, understanding how PSH resident profiles may be differentiated is crucial to the optimization of PSH implementation - and a subject that hasn't been studied yet. This study identified PSH resident profiles based on their housing conditions and service use, associated with their sociodemographic and clinical characteristics. In 2020-2021, 308 PSH residents from Quebec (Canada) were interviewed, with K-means cluster analysis produced to identify profiles and subsequent analyses to compare profiles and PSH

COVID-19 Status, Symptom Burden, and Characteristics of Dialysis Patients Residing in Areas of Community Transmission: Research Letter.

BACKGROUND: Routine testing of hemodialysis patients for COVID-19 (outside of those identified as "at risk" based on regional practice) is not universally recommended. However, there is variability in the clinical presentation of COVID-19; patients may experience symptoms that do not meet regional criteria for testing and some patients with active infection may be asymptomatic. To avoid missing individuals who are infected, consideration could be made for regular screening, particularly among those residing in areas with evidence of community spread. OBJECTIVE: To describe the clinical charac
