Respiratory rate is an important risk marker and enables early detection of critically ill and vulnerable patients in clinical routine. The aim of this pilot study with 31 patients (COPD severity levels II - IV) was to determine the mean nocturnal respiratory rate based on breath sound recordings and to investigate the dependence of respiratory rate on COPD severity level and smoker status. The mean respiratory rate of the total collective was 19/min. For the COPD-GOLD severity levels, no significant differences in mean respiratory rate could be observed. When nicotine consumption is taken int

BACKGROUND: The differential diagnosis of paediatric respiratory conditions is difficult and suboptimal. Existing diagnostic algorithms are associated with significant error rates, resulting in misdiagnoses, inappropriate use of antibiotics and unacceptable morbidity and mortality. Recent advances in acoustic engineering and artificial intelligence have shown promise in the identification of respiratory conditions based on sound analysis, reducing dependence on diagnostic support services and clinical expertise. We present the results of a diagnostic accuracy study for paediatric respiratory d

Monitored anesthesia care (MAC) often causes airway complications, particularly posing an elevated risk of aspiration and airway obstruction in obese patients. This study aimed to quantify the levels of aspiration and airway obstruction using an artificial intelligence (AI)-based acoustic analysis algorithm, assessing its utility in identifying airway complications in obese patients. To verify the correlation between the stridor quantitative value (STQV) calculated by acoustic analysis and body weight, and to further evaluate fluid retention and airway obstruction, STQV calculated exhaled brea

AIMS: To investigate how parents report children's respiratory sounds on video compared to a clinical "gold standard".
METHODS: Five clinicians agreed on 10 video clips of children with audible breathing. These responses were the "gold standard". The clips were shown to parents of children: (a) with asthma/wheeze; (b) with other respiratory complaints; (c) without respiratory complaints. Parents were asked what they called the sounds, where they originated, and whether their own child made similar sounds.
RESULTS: A total of 190 parents took part. The "correct" labelling of wheeze was 59% (9

Lung sounds, which include all sounds that are produced during the mechanism of respiration, may be classified into normal breath sounds and adventitious sounds. Normal breath sounds occur when no respiratory problems exist, whereas adventitious lung sounds (wheeze, rhonchi, crackle, etc.) are usually associated with certain pulmonary pathologies. Heart and lung sounds that are heard using a stethoscope are the result of mechanical interactions that indicate operation of cardiac and respiratory systems, respectively. In this article, we review the research conducted during the last six years o

Chronic respiratory diseases affect people worldwide, but conventional diagnostic methods may not be accessible in remote locations far from population centers. Sounds from the human respiratory system have displayed potential in autonomously detecting these diseases using artificial intelligence (AI). This article outlines the development of an audio-based edge computing system that automatically detects chronic respiratory diseases (CRDs). The system utilizes machine learning (ML) techniques to analyze audio recordings of respiratory sounds (cough and breath) and classify the presence or abs

BACKGROUND: Monitoring respiration parameters such as respiratory rate could be beneficial to understand the impact of training on equine health and performance and ultimately improve equine welfare. In this work, we compare deep learning-based methods to an adapted signal processing method to automatically detect cyclic respiratory events and extract the dynamic respiratory rate from microphone recordings during high-intensity exercise in Standardbred trotters.
RESULTS: Our deep learning models are able to detect exhalation sounds (median F1 score of 0.94) in noisy microphone signals and sho

Analysis of tracheal breathing sounds (TBS) is a significant area of study in medical diagnostics and monitoring for respiratory diseases and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Recorded at the suprasternal notch, TBS can provide detailed insights into the respiratory system's functioning and health. This method has been particularly useful for non-invasive assessments and is used in various clinical settings, such as OSA, asthma, respiratory infectious diseases, lung function, and detection during either wakefulness or sleep. One of the challenges and limitations of TBS recording is the background

INTRODUCTION: Cervical auscultation (CA) analyzes respiratory-swallow patterns to enhance the clinical swallow examination. A growing body of research demonstrates CA’s strong psychometric properties for detecting unsafe swallows. However, to date, no standard CA assessment protocol or training resources have been published. OBJECTIVE: Extending previous work, the objective is to publish the evidence-based assessment guide used in our earlier research. METHOD: Additional qualitative data and recent literature was integrated to update the previously unpublished CA guide. Qualitative content ana

REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY: It has long been recognised that the production of abnormal respiratory sounds by horses during exercise is frequently associated with upper airway obstructions. Respiratory acoustic measurements have shown promise in investigation of upper airway disorders in man and, more recently, in horses with experimentally-induced obstructions.
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate sounds from exercising horses with naturally occurring dynamic obstructions of the upper respiratory tract and to compare these with those from normal horses in order to determine whether different obstructio

Respiratory auscultation involves listening to and interpreting sounds from within the chest. Undertaking respiratory auscultation effectively requires appropriate equipment, knowledge of physiology and pathophysiology and experience in listening to and interpreting breath sounds. Nurses undertaking this procedure must ensure they have the knowledge and skills to do so and work within the limits of their competence. This article provides a step-by-step guide that explains how to undertake respiratory auscultation with infants and children aged 0-16 years. • Respiratory auscultation is an essen

Respiratory disorders, being one of the leading causes of disability worldwide, account for constant evolution in management technologies, resulting in the incorporation of artificial intelligence (AI) in the recording and analysis of lung sounds to aid diagnosis in clinical pulmonology practice. Although lung sound auscultation is a common clinical practice, its use in diagnosis is limited due to its high variability and subjectivity. We review the origin of lung sounds, various auscultation and processing methods over the years and their clinical applications to understand the potential for

Pulmonary auscultation is a method used in clinical practice for the evaluation and detection of abnormalities relating to the respiratory system. This method has limitations, as it depends on the experience and hearing acuity of the examiner to determine adventitious sounds. In this context, it's important to analyze whether there is a correlation between auscultation of lung sounds and the behavior of the respiratory mechanical properties of the respiratory system in patients with immediate postoperative cardiac surgery.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: A novel method for acoustic imaging of the human respiratory system is proposed and evaluated.
DESIGN: The proposed imaging system uses simultaneous multisensor recordings of thoracic sounds from the chest wall, and digital, computer-based postprocessing. Computer simulations and recordings from a life-size gelatin model of the human thorax are used to evaluate the system in vitro. Spatial representations of thoracic sounds from 8-microphone and 16-microphone recordings from five subjects (four healthy male adults and one child with lung consolidation) are used to evaluate t

Audio-based classification techniques for body sounds have long been studied to aid in the diagnosis of respiratory diseases. While most research is centered on the use of coughs as the main acoustic biomarker, other body sounds also have the potential to detect respiratory diseases. Recent studies on the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) have suggested that breath and speech sounds, in addition to cough, correlate with the disease. Our study proposes fused audio instance and representation (FAIR) as a method for respiratory disease detection. FAIR relies on constructing a joint feature vect

Sputum deposition blocks the airways of patients and leads to blood oxygen desaturation. Medical staff must periodically check the breathing state of intubated patients. This process increases staff workload. In this paper, we describe a system designed to acquire respiratory sounds from intubated subjects, extract the audio features, and classify these sounds to detect the presence of sputum. Our method uses 13 features extracted from the time-frequency spectrum of the respiratory sounds. To test our system, 220 respiratory sound samples were collected. Half of the samples were collected from
