Ventilatory response during halothane and enflurane anaesthesia.

In six children with body weights between 11.4-18.7 kg, minute ventilation, tidal volume, respiratory rate, end-tidal CO2 concentration and CO2 elimination were measured during both CO2 free breathing and CO2 breathing due to low fresh gas flows (maximal inspired CO2 about 2%) or the addition of CO2 from Rotameters (mean inspired CO2 about 1.5%) during both halothane and enflurane anaesthesia. All patients were undergoing hypospadias repair, received caudal analgesia prior to surgery and were intubated and allowed to breathe halothane/enflurane in O2/N2O (FIO2 0.5) spontaneously through a modi

Skin Exposure Contributes to Chemical-Induced Asthma: What is the Evidence? A Systematic Review of Animal Models.

It is generally assumed that allergic asthma originates primarily through sensitization via the respiratory mucosa, but emerging clinical observations and experimental studies indicate that skin exposure to low molecular weight (LMW) agents, i.e. "chemicals," may lead to systemic sensitization and subsequently develop asthma when the chemical is inhaled. This review aims to evaluate the accumulating experimental evidence that adverse respiratory responses can be elicited upon inhalation of an LMW chemical sensitizer after previous sensitization by dermal exposure. We systematically searched th

Fungal diseases of reptiles.

Fungal infections affecting the integumentary system, the upper and lower respiratory system and the gastro-intestinal tract have been reported in many species of captive reptiles. Systemic mycoses are diagnosed rarely in reptiles, and in most cases, they are a postmortem finding. Commonly, immunocompromised reptiles, kept in suboptimal environmental conditions are affected. In many cases, mixed bacterial and fungal infections of opportunistic organisms may be present. A diagnosis of a primary fungal infection is based on proper selection and collection of diagnostic specimens such as biopsies

Adverse events across generations of bone-modifying agents in patients with solid tumor cancers reported in Phase III randomized trials.

AIMS: The objective of this study is to compare adverse events experienced among different bone-modifying agents. METHODS: A literature search was conducted to identify Phase III bisphosphonate and bone-modifying agent trials reporting adverse effects. Thirty-seven adverse events of interest were identified for six different treatment options. Weighted linear regression modeling was performed on the adverse event proportions with treatment groups, normalized through applying natural log transformations. RESULTS: There were significant differences in adverse events of vomiting (p = 0.045) and

Effect of Serotonin 1A Agonists and Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors on Behavioral and Nighttime Respiratory Symptoms in Rett Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Rett syndrome is characterized by psychomotor regression during early childhood, autistic-like behaviors, and aberrant breathing patterns. Dysfunction of the serotonergic system has been postulated to play a role in the pathophysiology of these symptoms. PATIENT DESCRIPTION: We present an 11-year-old girl with Rett syndrome who exhibited marked respiratory symptoms, including frequent apneic events during sleep. She had been treated for these respiratory symptoms using noninvasive positive pressure ventilation since age six years. Treatment with serotonin 1A receptor agonist was i

[Seasonal Trends and Interactions of Viral Pathogens in Children Presenting with Acute Respiratory Tract Infections in the Advancing Periods of SARS-CoV-2 Pandemic].

Although various bacteria and viruses have been identified in the etiology of acute respiratory tract infections (ARI), 90% of acute ARIs that develop in children are of viral origin. The aim of this study was to investigate the seasonal trends and interactions between infectious agents and to determine the risk factors associated with ARI in children aged 1-15 years admitted to the Pediatric Emergency Department of Manisa Celal Bayar University Hospital in the advancing periods of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic. To determine the bacterial and viral agent

[Rare occupational respiratory diseases].

This paper reviews rare occupational respiratory diseases with uncommon causes. Among others, it refers to the Ardystil syndrome characterized by the occurrence of organizing pneumonia in the textile printing sprayers, as a result of inhalation of substances used in aerographic textile printing. Furthermore, secondary pulmonary alveolar proteinosis due to exposure to chemical and organic dusts was described, and so was the occurrence of the "vineyard sprayer's lung" in farm workers in Portugal. Eosinophilic bronchitis, showing a strong resemblance to bronchial asthma, was found to occur, among

[Acute respiratory distress syndrome due to pneumonitis following intrathecal methotrexate administration].

INTRODUCTION: Methotrexate, given orally or systemically, is associated with pneumonitis in 7% of cases. CASE REPORT: This case report describes acute respiratory distress syndrome, due to diffuse pneumonitis, in a patient with malignant non-Hodgkin's lymphoma being treated with combination chemotherapy which included doxorubicin, cyclophosphamide, bleomycin, vindesin and intrathecal methotrexate with G-CSF (filgrastine- Neupogen). The clinical course, the lack of an identifiable infectious agent and the complete response to corticosteroids suggested a drug-induced cause. After ruling out the

Childhood Respiratory Conditions: Lower Respiratory Tract Infection.

Bronchiolitis, a lower respiratory tract infection, commonly affects infants and children younger than 2 years. Respiratory syncytial virus is the most common cause. Nasal congestion, rhinorrhea, and mild fever occur in the first 1 to 3 days. Symptoms worsen for several days to include wheezing and other lower respiratory tract signs, and then resolve over days to weeks. However, some children develop hypoxemia and/or respiratory distress and require hospitalization. The diagnosis is clinical, based on the history and physical examination findings. Routine chest x-rays and blood tests are not

Understanding and countering opioid-induced respiratory depression.

Respiratory depression is the proximal cause of death in opioid overdose, yet the mechanisms underlying this potentially fatal outcome are not well understood. The goal of this review is to provide a comprehensive understanding of the pharmacological mechanisms of opioid-induced respiratory depression, which could lead to improved therapeutic options to counter opioid overdose, as well as other detrimental effects of opioids on breathing. The development of tolerance in the respiratory system is also discussed, as are differences in the degree of respiratory depression caused by various opioid

Chapter 12. Antiviral Agents.

This chapter discusses the agents with activity primarily against RNA viruses. The communicable diseases of the respiratory tract are probably the most common cause of symptomatic human infections. The viruses that are causative agents for human respiratory disease comprise the five taxonomically distinct families: orthomyxoviridae, paramyxoviridae, picornaviridae, coronaviridae, and adenoviridae. The influenza viruses, which consist of types A, B, and C, belong to the family orthomyxoviridae. Types A and B have been associated with significant increases in mortality during epidemics. The dise

Cystic fibrosis and other respiratory diseases of impaired mucus clearance.

Exposed to a diverse array of potentially noxious agents, the respiratory tract is protected by a highly developed innate defense system. Physiologically regulated epithelial ion and water transport coordinated with mucin secretion, beating cilia, and cough results in continuous flow of fluid and mucus over airway surfaces toward the larynx. This cleansing action is the initial and perhaps most quantitatively important innate defense mechanism. Repeated lung infections and eventual respiratory insufficiency characteristic of human cystic fibrosis (CF) and primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) illus

Optimal Sedation in Patients Who Receive Neuromuscular Blocking Agent Infusions for Treatment of Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome-A Retrospective Cohort Study From a New England Health Care Network.

OBJECTIVES: Two previously published trials (ARDS et Curarisation Systematique [ACURASYS] and Reevaluation of Systemic Early Neuromuscular Blockade [ROSE]) presented equivocal evidence on the effect of neuromuscular blocking agent infusions in patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (acute respiratory distress syndrome). The sedation regimen differed between these trials and also within the ROSE trial between treatment and control groups. We hypothesized that the proportion of deeper sedation is a mediator of the effect of neuromuscular blocking agent infusions on mortality. DESIGN:

Augmentation of the Inotropic Effects of Dopamine Following Linezolid Administration in an Infant.

Although generally safe and effective, one of the unique properties of linezolid is its weak inhibitory effect on monoamine oxidase. As such, it may interact with other medications that act through the adrenergic or serotonergic systems, including selective-serotonin reuptake inhibitors and vasoactive agents. We present a 3-month-old infant who was being treated with dopamine to maintain mean arterial pressure during mechanical ventilation following viral-induced respiratory failure. Hypertension and tachycardia developed during the administration of linezolid on two separate occasions. The ph

Neurologic Alterations Due to Respiratory Virus Infections.

Central Nervous System (CNS) infections are one of the most critical problems in public health, as frequently patients exhibit neurologic sequelae. Usually, CNS pathologies are caused by known neurotropic viruses such as measles virus (MV), herpes virus and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), among others. However, nowadays respiratory viruses have placed themselves as relevant agents responsible for CNS pathologies. Among these neuropathological viruses are the human respiratory syncytial virus (hRSV), the influenza virus (IV), the coronavirus (CoV) and the human metapneumovirus (hMPV). These

Rapid detection of multiple respiratory viruses based on microfluidic isothermal amplification and a real-time colorimetric method.

Respiratory viruses are major threats causing development of acute respiratory tract infections, which are common causes of illness and death throughout the world. Here, an integrated microsystem based on real-time colorimetry was developed for diagnosing multiple respiratory viruses. The microsystem employed magnetic beads for nucleic acid extraction and an eight-channel microfluidic array chip integrated with a loop-mediated isothermal amplification system for point-of-care screening of respiratory viruses. The overall detection process (including sample collection, nucleic acid extraction,

[Steroid-Resistant Central Nervous System Sarcoidosis: The Selections of Multi-Agent Combination as the Initial Treatment].

Sarcoidosis is a granulomatous multiorgan disease of unknown etiology that commonly affects the respiratory system, eyes, and skin, and less commonly affects the nervous system. Because of its rarity, a standard treatment for central nervous system (CNS) sarcoidosis has not yet been established. Corticosteroids remain the cornerstone of CNS sarcoidosis treatment. However, CNS sarcoidosis, other than isolated facial nerve paralysis, is often refractory to treatment and requires long-term corticosteroid treatment. In particular, patients with hydrocephalus have a high mortality rate and a lack o

Neural Control of the Upper Airway: Respiratory and State-Dependent Mechanisms.

Upper airway muscles subserve many essential for survival orofacial behaviors, including their important role as accessory respiratory muscles. In the face of certain predisposition of craniofacial anatomy, both tonic and phasic inspiratory activation of upper airway muscles is necessary to protect the upper airway against collapse. This protective action is adequate during wakefulness, but fails during sleep which results in recurrent episodes of hypopneas and apneas, a condition known as the obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSA). Although OSA is almost exclusively a human disorder, animal m
