[Cystic dysplasia of rete testis associated with ipsilateral renal agenesis. Case report].

Cystic dysplasia of the rete testis is a rare abnormality often associated with the ipsilateral agenesis of kidney. This malformation is due to a development defect of the mesonephric duct which is the cause of both the dilation of the testicular rete testis and renal agenesis. A case of this rare malformation, showing all the peculiarities described in the medical literature, is presented. A 3 years-4 months boy was examined for an asymptomatic left scrotal mass; thus, he underwent ultrasonography, which showed a multiple tubular and cystic dilatation of left rete testis, associated with the

Analysis of benign neoplasms of the rete testis formerly termed "Sertoliform cystadenomas" demonstrates that they are not Sertoli cell tumours with intra-rete growth.

AIMS: Benign tumours of the rete testis include mostly cystadenomas and adenomas. A subset with tubular or tubulopapillary architecture shows morphological similarities to Sertoli cell tumours; these neoplasms were previously termed "Sertoliform cystadenomas of the rete testis". In the most recent WHO classification, they have been interpreted as Sertoli cell tumours, not otherwise specified (NOS), with pure intra-rete growth, and therefore excluded as an entity. The remaining cystadenomas of the rete testis vaguely resemble tumours of Mullerian origin arising in the ovaries. In this study we

Rete Testis Invasion Is Consistent With Pathologic Stage T1 in Germ Cell Tumors.

OBJECTIVES: Rete testis invasion by germ cell tumors is frequently concomitant with lymphovascular or spermatic cord invasion (LVI/SCI); independent implications for staging are uncertain. METHODS: In total, 171 seminomas and 178 nonseminomatous germ cell tumors (NSGCTs; 46 had 1%-60% seminoma component) came from five institutions. Metastatic status at presentation, as a proxy for severity, was available for all; relapse data were unavailable for 152. Rete direct invasion (ReteD) and rete pagetoid spread (ReteP) were assessed. RESULTS: ReteP and ReteD were more frequent in seminoma than NSG

Tubular ectasia of the rete testis (TERT). Differential diagnosis of cystic testicular disorders.

The ultrasound scan plays an essential role in the urological-andrological diagnosis. High-resolution transducers (8-15 MHz) make it possible to prove increasingly small changes. The assessment of cystic masses in the testis can also be difficult for experienced doctors. However, a precise diagnosis is crucial for the patient to avoid further invasive diagnostics and therapy. The differential diagnosis of benign intra-testicular cystic lesions include the tubular ectasia of the rete testis (TERT), the cystic dysplasia, epidermoid cysts, dermoid cysts, simple testicular cysts and cysts of the t

Papillary adenocarcinoma of rete testis. Autopsy findings, histochemistry, immunohistochemistry, ultrastructure, and clinical correlations.

Adenocarcinoma of the rete testis is a rare neoplasm that usually occurs in men after the age of 60 and carries a variable prognosis. We report an occurrence of this tumor in a 91-year-old man who had been treated for 2 years for an hydrocele. At the time of diagnosis, metastases were not evident; and the patient was treated with local radiotherapy. The diagnosis of papillary adenocarcinoma of the rete testis was made on the basis of: (a) a transition from normal rete testis to atypical and neoplastic rete epithelium; (b) exclusion of primary germinal and nongerminal testicular tumors and spre

Adenomatoid Tumor of Epididymis Associated with Tubular Ectasia of Rete Testis: Sonographic Evaluation.

Paratesticular tumors are a relatively rare group of mesenchymal tumors, accounting for 7%-10% of all intrascrotal tumors. Adenomatoid tumor of the epididymis is the most common epididymal tumor. It is difficult to distinguish intra- versus paratesticular tumors and to know the nature of the lesion (benign versus malignant) on clinical examination since they may have similar presentation; therefore, ultrasound examination of these lesions is required to demonstrate its extratesticular location and also to suggest its benign nature. Elastography can further help in characterizing the lesion by

Herpes simplex virus inoculation in murine rete testis results in irreversible testicular damage.

This study aimed to establish the influence of herpes simplex virus (HSV) on testis morphology and germ cell development using a model of ascending urogenital HSV infection in mice. Adult C57BL/6J mice were inoculated with 100 plaque-forming units of HSV1 in rete testis. Viral proteins and HSV DNA were detected from 3 days postinoculation (DPI), while capsids and virions could be visualized at 6 DPI. Infectious activity of HSV was revealed by rapid culture method in testes from 3 to 14 DPI, and virus DNA by PCR - from 3 to 100 DPI. Germ and Sertoli cells were infected during the early stages o

Cystic testicular mass caused by dilated rete testis: sonographic findings in 31 cases.

We reviewed the scrotal sonograms of 31 patients who had a testicular mass consisting of multiple small spherical or tubular anechoic structures in the region of the mediastinum testis. The median age of the patients was 62 years (range, 31-76 years). The abnormality was unilateral in 22 patients and bilateral in nine. Thirty-four (85%) of the 40 involved testicles had coexisting epididymal abnormalities: 32 with epididymal cysts and two with epididymitis. Follow-up sonograms were available in five patients and showed no change up to 4.5 years after the initial diagnosis. Surgical and histolog

Intraparenchymatous adenomatoid tumor dependent on the rete testis: A case report and review of literature.

The adenomatoid tumor is the most frequent paratesticular tumor. It is a benign tumor, which in women is mainly found in the uterus and the fallopian tubes, while in men it is most frequently found in the epididymis. These lesions may also affect the testicular albuginea, the spermatic cord and, in exceptional cases, the testicular parenchyma, of which there are only 4 published cases, the ejaculatory ducts, prostate, etc. The clinical signs and imaging studies are, on many occasions, difficult to differentiate from malign intratesticular solid tumor, which can result in unnecessary orchidecto

Cystic dysplasia of the rete testis: a case of spontaneous regression and review of published reports.

Cystic dysplasia of the rete testis (CDT) is a rare benign testicular tumor. We present the second case of spontaneous regression in a 9-year-old boy and summarize the findings of 48 cases in published reports. The most common presentation is scrotal and/or testicular swelling. Common associated renal tract anomalies include ipsilateral renal agenesis and multicystic dysplastic kidney. In 13% of patients, no associated renal anomalies were observed. Orchidectomy was performed in 65% of patients (n = 31) and testicular-sparing surgery, that is, enucleation in 15% (n = 8). In 5 of these 8 patien

Transduction and transplantation of spermatogonia into the testis of ram lambs through the extra-testicular rete.

Spermatogonial transplantation will provide a new way to study spermatogenesis in domestic animals, disseminate male genetics and produce transgenic animals, if efficiency can be improved. We evaluated a 'surgical' method for transplanting donor cells into testes of ram lambs, where the head of the epididymis is reflected, and a catheter introduced into the extra-testicular rete testis. We also tested transduction of ram spermatogonia with a lentiviral (LV) vector as a means to identify permanent colonization, and introduce genes into donor cells. Eight ram lambs, 11- to 13-week olds, were the

Evidence of Sertoli cell lineage contribution to the rete testis population during embryonic development.

The rete testis (RT) develops at the gonad-mesonephros interface and links seminiferous tubules to efferent ductules, but the cellular origins of RT cells and the mechanisms driving RT expansion during embryonic development remain incompletely resolved. Here, to test whether gonadal Sertoli cell (SC) lineage cells contribute to the developing RT, we applied a chimeric organotypic culture approach combining gonadal and mesonephric compartments of GFP+ and GFP-mouse embryonic urogenital complexes of embryonic day 12.5 (E12.5). The gonadal compartments were dissected to be devoid of PAX8+ RT cell

Rhox8 homeobox gene ablation leads to rete testis abnormality and male subfertility in mice†.

The reproductive homeobox X-linked (Rhox) genes encode transcription factors that are expressed selectively in reproductive tissues including the testis, epididymis, ovary, and placenta. While many Rhox genes are expressed in germ cells in the mouse testis, only Rhox8 is expressed exclusively in the Sertoli cells during embryonic and postnatal development, suggesting a possible role of Rhox8 in embryonic gonad development. Previously, Sertoli cell-specific knockdown of RHOX8 resulted in male subfertility due to germ cell defects. However, this knockdown model was limited in examining the funct

Knockout of the polysialyltransferases ST8SiaII and ST8SiaIV leads to a dilatation of rete testis during postnatal development.

Polysialic acid (polySia) is a carbohydrate polymer that modulates several cellular processes, such as migration, proliferation and differentiation processes. In the brain, its essential impact during postnatal development is well known. However, in most other polySia positive organs, only its localization has been described so far. For instance, in the murine epididymis, smooth muscle cells of the epididymal duct are polysialylated during the first 2 weeks of postnatal development. To understand the role of polySia during the development of the epididymis, the consequences of its loss were in

Adenomatous hyperplasia of the rete testis: A rare intrascrotal lesion managed with limited testicular excision.

INTRODUCTION: Testicular cancer is one of the most frequent in young men and its incidence is increasing in recent years because of incidental finding during routine ultrasound exams. Adenomatous hyperplasia of the rete testis is one of the benign and rare pathological types incidentally detected and very few cases are described in the literature. CASE REPORT: A 40 years old man come to our attention for a balanoposthitis without testicular pain. During andrological examination we performed palpation of the testes and we noticed a palpable nodule of hard consistency in the left testicle. We t

Rete testis thickness is a novel predictor for Johnsen score and sperm retrieval outcomes in azoospermia.

BACKGROUND: Microdissection testicular sperm extraction (micro-TESE) is an important technique for retrieving sperm in cases of non-obstructive azoospermia (NOA). However, the success rate of sperm retrieval using micro-TESE remains suboptimal. This has created an urgent clinical need to identify reliable predictive indicators that can accurately determine which NOA patients are likely to benefit from the procedure. Current literature lacks comprehensive studies correlating non-invasive ultrasound-based testis parameters with micro-TESE outcomes, highlighting a gap in the ability to preoperati

Adenomatous hyperplasia of rete testis diagnosis on testicular biopsy for primary infertility: A case report.

Adenomatous hyperplasia of rete testis is a rare non-neoplastic proliferation of rete testis epithelium. Mostly as an incidental finding in orchiectomy specimen for cryptorchidism and germ cell tumors. However, AHRT in testicular biopsies is rarely reported in the literature. The pathogenesis of AHRT is not fully understood yet. AHRT usually arises near the mediastinum and septal portion of the rete testis. Herein, we report an interesting finding of AHRT in a testicular biopsy performed for infertility workup. Practicing pathologists must be aware of this entity and the differential diagnosis
