[Effects of Tradislexia videogame on phonological awareness and word recognition in dyslexic children].

The purpose of this research was to analyze the effects of multimedia training on phonological awareness and word recognition in dyslexic children. We used a control pretest-posttest design, and a sample of 62 children (26 male, 36 female) was selected from Primary Education. Children were selected and classified into two different groups: (1) an experimental group (N=32), and (2) a control group (N=30). The average range age was 9 and 12 years (M=126.7, SD=11.7). We administered phonological awareness tasks, which include different types of syllabic structure from the Sicole-R Multimedia Batt

Are faces special in Alzheimer's disease? Cognitive conceptualisation, neural correlates, and diagnostic relevance of impaired memory for faces and names.

Memory for faces and names has increasingly become a focus of cognitive assessment and research in Alzheimer's disease (AD). This paper reviews evidence from cognitive and clinical neuroscience regarding the question of whether AD is associated with a specific deficit in face recognition, face-name association, and retrieval of semantic information and names. Cognitive approaches conceptualizing face recognition and face-name association have revealed that, compared to other types of visual stimuli, faces are "special" because of their complexity and high intraclass similarity, and because the

No evidence for the impact of mind wandering on recognition associative task: an on-line preregistered study.

Previous examinations of the relationship between mind wandering (MW) during post-encoding periods and subsequent memory consolidation has led to mixed results. This study aimed to investigate how different mental states during a retention interval impact associative and relational memory consolidation. One hundred ninety-seven participants performed an online task where they encoded object-face associations before completing either a low-demand (1-back) or high-demand (3-back) post-encoding task for 15 min. Thought probes assessed mental states (on-task focus, MW related to encoded material,

Prolonged inactivation of the hippocampus reveals temporally graded retrograde amnesia for unreinforced spatial learning in rats.

We investigated whether systems consolidation of spatial memory could be detected in a non-navigational, spatial-learning test that takes advantage of rats' natural propensity to preferentially investigate an object that was displaced relative to spatial cues more than an object that remained stationary. Previous studies using navigational spatial-learning tests have generally failed to reveal temporally-graded retrograde amnesia, possibly because the hippocampus needs to be intact for the retrieval and/or processing of navigational information during the test. In the present study, the hippoc

Training and transfer-of-learning effects in disabled and normal readers: evidence of specific deficits.

Two experiments were conducted to assess the specificity of training and transfer deficits in disabled readers, aged 7 to 9 years. Forty-eight children (reading disabled, age-matched normal controls, and reading-level-matched normal controls) participated in both a reading and a nonreading (music) acquisition paradigm. Children received instruction in grapheme-phoneme and symbol-note correspondence patterns, respectively. Posttraining tests (one day and one week) following rule training compared performance on trained exemplar items with performance on untrained transfer items. Results reveale

Virtual Active Learning to Maximize Knowledge Acquisition in Nursing Students: A Comparative Study.

BACKGROUND: Nursing students need to acquire knowledge through active methods that promote critical thinking and decision making. The purpose of this study is to analyze whether there are differences in the acquisition of knowledge by nursing students between active face-to-face or virtual teaching methods. METHODS: In this comparative study, nursing students enrolled in the psychology course were divided into two groups: a face-to-face group that received active teaching methods and a virtual group. The virtual group was exposed to the Effective Learning Strategy (ELS), which included semina

Evaluation of the retention of knowledge, skills and competency of post-neonatal resuscitation training among house officers.

INTRODUCTION: The Neonatal Resuscitation Programme (NRP) was first introduced in Malaysia in 1996 to train doctors and nurses working in paediatrics and obstetrics departments who are involved with the care of newborns soon after delivery. Prompt and effective neonatal resuscitation has been documented to reduce mortality and neonatal asphyxia. The programme has been revised every five years and is now in the 8th edition. NRP training was made into a key performance indicator (KPI) by the Ministry of Health in 2016 for all house officers to be trained in this programme during their 2-year post

Transition shock trajectories and their reciprocal mediation with professional identity on nursing interns' retention: A longitudinal study with educational implications.

BACKGROUND: Transition shock (TS) is a core stressor influencing nursing students' career choices. However, its dynamic trajectories during internship and influence on retention intentions remain underexplored. OBJECTIVES: To identify heterogeneous TS trajectories in nursing interns, examine associations of psychological capital, internship bullying, and organizational support with trajectory categories, and investigate the longitudinal reciprocal effects between TS and professional identity (PI) and their subsequent impact on retention intentions. DESIGN: A prospective longitudinal study wi

Acute pain impairs retention of locomotor learning, regardless of the context of retention testing.

Our group and others have shown that the presence of an acute painful stimulus may interfere with retention of motor learning. Conversely, other evidence suggests this effect may not be truly due to pain, but due to a change in context when testing retention, i.e., testing retention in a nonpainful context when learning occurred in a painful context. Yet to our knowledge, no study has directly compared the retention of learning acquired under painful conditions with versus without a context change. To answer this question, we tested 30 young, healthy adults on a locomotor learning and retentio

Phase shifting circadian rhythms produces retrograde amnesia.

Phase shifting circadian rhythms in rats shortly after passive avoidance training impaired their performance on retention tests. The amnesia was not due to simple performance deficits accompanying the "jet leg" effects of phase shifting or to differences in lighting or circadian phase at training and at testing. Amnesia was associated with specific rhythm reentrainment patterns. These data indicate that disrupting circadian organization can produce retrograde amnesia in rats.

Group behavioral treatment of retentive encopresis.

Investigated the efficacy of behavioral group treatment for children with retentive encopresis who had previously failed medical management. Eighteen children between the ages of 4 and 11 years and their parents were seen in small treatment groups of 3 to 5 families over 6 sessions. The sessions focused on education about retentive encopresis, and the integration of behavioral parenting procedures with medical management. Parents and children were taught to deliver an enema clean-out, increase the children's dietary fiber, and appropriate toileting techniques. The results indicated that childr

Facial defects restored with extraoral implant-supported prostheses.

A facial defect results in cosmetic, functional, and psychologic problems and acts as a difficult and challenging procedure for the maxillofacial surgeon and the prosthodontist. Retention of a facial prosthesis is an important key in the patient's satisfaction and acceptance. The introduction of extraoral implant applications have been accepted as an advanced retention method. The purpose of this article is to report the results from our clinical experience with patients wearing facial prostheses anchored to extraoral ITI implants (Straumann, AG, Basel, Switzerland).

The butcher on the bus: A note on familiarity without recollection.

In 1980, George Mandler published an article in Psychological Review that has become very influential in the study of memory. As evidence, according to Google Scholar (as of August 17, 2020), this article has been cited 3,391 times. Writing about recognition memory, Mandler made a fundamental distinction between recognition involving familiarity and recognition involving recollection. Mandler introduced what has since become the label for his illustration, saying that "Specific identification of an event is not possible on the basis of its familiarity alone. The butcher-in-the-bus is one intui

Demarcating the boundary conditions of memory reconsolidation: An unsuccessful replication.

Disrupting memory reconsolidation provides an opportunity to abruptly reduce the behavioural expression of fear memories with long-lasting effects. The success of a reconsolidation intervention is, however, not guaranteed as it strongly depends on the destabilization of the memory. Identifying the necessary conditions to trigger destabilization remains one of the critical challenges in the field. We aimed to replicate a study from our lab, showing that the occurrence of a prediction error (PE) during reactivation is necessary but not sufficient for destabilization. We tested the effectiveness

Sex, diurnal variation and retention interval differently affect performance of marmoset monkeys in a recognition memory task for object location.

In the spontaneous object-location (SOL) task, the ability to recognize where stimuli were located in a past encounter is assessed. Even if widely used in rodents, several aspects can affect task performance. It is thus important to assess potentially intervening variables in the new monkey SOL task. Here we assessed whether sex (male vs. females), circadian time (morning vs. afternoon) and retention interval (24 vs. 48 h) affect the performance of adult marmosets in this task. Two identical stimuli were initially explored on a 10-min sample trial. Thereafter, preferential exploration of the d

Using tDCS to facilitate motor learning in speech production: The role of timing.

There exists debate regarding the extent to which transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) can affect or enhance human behavior. Here, we examined a previously unexplored domain: speech motor learning. We investigated whether speech motor learning in unimpaired participants can be enhanced using a single-session tDCS experiment, and investigated whether the timing of tDCS relative to a behavioral task affected performance. Participants (N = 80) performed a twenty minute learning task with nonwords containing non-native consonant clusters (e.g., GDEEVOO), and were assigned to groups recei

Psychosocial approaches to psychostimulant dependence: a systematic review.

This review examines the nature and evidence for the effectiveness of psychosocial interventions for psychostimulant dependence. Psychostimulant dependence and related harms continue to increase in many parts of the world, while treatment responses are predominantly limited to psychosocial interventions. The effectiveness of psychosocial interventions is compromised by poor rates of treatment induction and retention. As with other substance use disorders, increasing the diversity of treatment options is likely to improve treatment coverage and outcomes across a broader range of users. Identify

Choice autonomy and memory for spatial locations in six-year-old children.

Six-year-old children were presented with 12 identically labelled locations in a room and required to search non-redundantly for the six that contained rewards. On each day they could commit Across-Trial Memory (ATM) errors by visiting non-rewarded locations, or Within-Trial Memory (WTM) errors by revisiting locations previously visited that day. Groups were trained for nine days, either walking or pushed in a wheelchair, and with or without freedom of choice. They were then tested, walking with freedom of choice. Performance of the task improved significantly across training days in groups al
