Complete horizontal gaze palsy due to bilateral paramedian pontine reticular formation involvement as a presentation of multiple sclerosis: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Demyelinating central nervous system diseases include several disorders that multiple sclerosis (MS) is identified as the most common among them. Ocular movement disturbances are a typical presentation in MS patients where lesions affect the complex and interconnected pathways involved in eye motion. Centers for gaze control are located in the pons primarily; therefore, lesions involving these centers can be presented with abnormalities in gaze. However, bilateral lesions in pontine gaze centers are exceptionally rare. CASE PRESENTATION: A 16-year-old girl with bilateral horizonta

Responses evoked by electrical stimulation of the brainstem reticular formation in the jaw-opening and hypoglossal motor nerves of an arterially perfused rat preparation.

The interneuronal system in the brainstem reticular formation plays an important role in elaborate muscle coordination during various orofacial motor behaviors. In this study, we examined the distribution in the brainstem reticular formation of the sites that induce monosynaptic motor activity in the mylohyoid (jaw-opening) and hypoglossal nerves using an arterially perfused rat preparation. Electrical stimulation applied to 286 and 247 of the 309 sites in the brainstem evoked neural activity in the mylohyoid and hypoglossal nerves, respectively. The mean latency of the first component in the

Giant neurons in the caudal pontine reticular formation receive short latency acoustic input: an intracellular recording and HRP-study in the rat.

The reticular formation is composed of heterogeneous cell populations with multiple functions. Among these multiple functions is the processing of sensory information in the context of behavior. The purpose of the present study was to identify and characterize neurons in the reticular formation of the rat that receive auditory input. In order to do so, we combined intracellular electrophysiology in vivo with intracellular injection of horseradish peroxidase, enabling us to correlate electrophysiology unequivocally with anatomy at the single cell level. We found that many neurons in the caudal

Anatomical distribution of arm-movement-related neurons in the primate superior colliculus and underlying reticular formation in comparison with visual and saccadic cells.

We recorded from 389 "reach" neurons (two monkeys) in the superior colliculus (SC) and underlying reticular formation (RF) or adjacent periaqueductal grey, whose activity was related to visually guided arm movements. Reach neurons were present from approximately 0.7 mm down to a depth of 6 mm below the surface of the SC (mean 3.7+/-1.3, n=389). Although this mean distribution was different from that of cells with visual (mean depth 1.7+/-1.4 mm, n=283) or saccadic responses (mean depth 2.0+/-1.4 mm, n=232), there was a large amount of overlap. Fifty-five per cent of all reach cells (213/389) w

Blockade of GABA, type A, receptors in the rat pontine reticular formation induces rapid eye movement sleep that is dependent upon the cholinergic system.

The brainstem reticular formation is an area important to the control of rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. The antagonist of GABA-type A (GABA(A)) receptors, bicuculline methiodide (BMI), injected into the rat nucleus pontis oralis (PnO) of the reticular formation resulted in a long-lasting increase in REM sleep. Thus, one factor controlling REM sleep appears to be the number of functional GABA(A) receptors in the PnO. The long-lasting effect produced by BMI may result from secondary influences on other neurotransmitter systems known to have long-lasting effects. To study this question, rats wer

[The role of brain-stem vasomotor centers on the neurogenic control of cerebrovascular tonus. Part 2: The effect of stimulation of the medullary reticular formation on cerebrovascular tonus].

Acute brain swelling has been proposed to be caused by vasomotor paralysis secondary to disruption of metabolic and/or neurogenic control of cerebrovascular tone. In previous experiments, acute brain swelling was produced by stimulation of the reticular formation of the medulla oblongata (MORF) with destruction of the dorsomedial nucleus of the hypothalamus (DM) and the reticular formation of the midbrain (MBRF) in 2 (out of 56) animals. The purpose of the present study is to clarify the effect of stimulation of the MORF on cerebrovascular tone. Using 32 cats, blood pressure (BP), intracranial

Effects of morphine on sensory-evoked responses recorded from central gray, reticular formation, thalamus, hypothalamus, limbic system, basal ganglia, dorsal raphe, locus ceruleus, and pineal body.

Field potential recordings of acoustic and photic-evoked responses were obtained from 15 brain sites of freely behaving unanesthetized rats previously implanted stereotaxically with permanent electrodes. Several dosages of morphine (1, 5, 10, 30, and 50 mg/kg) were examined. The activities recorded from all the structures in this study, except the cochlear nucleus (CoN), were affected by morphine. Different sensitivities to morphine threshold were observed between structures, and several structures exhibited dose-related patterns (ventromedial hypothalamus (VMH), caudate nuucleus (CN), central

Location of motoneurons innervating soft palate, pharynx and upper esophagus. Anatomical evidence for a possible swallowing center in the pontine reticular formation. An HRP and autoradiographical tracing study.

Retrograde HRP studies indicated that motoneurons innervating soft palate and pharynx are located in especially the dorsal group of the nucleus ambiguus, while motoneurons innervating upper esophagus and cricothyroid muscles are located in the retrofacial nucleus, the most rostral part of the nucleus ambiguus. Autoradiographic tracing techniques revealed that in the caudal pontine tegmentum an area is located just dorsal to the superior olivary complex, that projects contralaterally to the ventral part of the trigeminal motor nucleus, the dorsal group of the nucleus ambiguus and the ventral pa

Ascending vestibular pathways to parietal areas MIP and LIPv and efference copy inputs from the medial reticular formation: Functional frameworks for body representations updating and online movement guidance.

The posterior parietal cortex (PPC) serves as a sensorimotor interface by integrating multisensory signals with motor related information for generating and updating body representations and movement plans. Using retrograde transneuronal transfer of rabies virus combined with a conventional tracer, we identified direct and polysynaptic pathways to two PPC areas, the rostral medial intraparietal area (MIP) and the ventral part of the lateral intraparietal area (LIPv) in macaque monkeys. We found that rostral MIP and LIPv receive ascending vestibular pathways, and putative efference copy inputs

Actions of GABA, glycine, methionine-enkephalin and beta-endorphin compared with electrical stimulation of nucleus raphe magnus on responses evoked by tooth pulp stimulation in the medial reticular formation in the cat.

In decerebrate, cerebellectomized cats, a comparison was made between the effects of electrical stimulation in nucleus raphe magnus (NRM) and iontophoretic application of GABA, glycine, met-enkephalin and beta-endorphin on the responses of neurones in the medial brain stem reticular formation to tooth pulp stimulation. NRM stimulation, GABA, glycine and enkephalin produced a short lasting inhibition of tooth pulp evoked responses whilst the time course of the inhibition produced by beta-endorphin was much slower, often lasting up to 1 h following a 3-7 min ejection period. The effects of GABA

The Ascending Reticular Activating System.

Discovery of the ascending reticular activating system (ARAS) can be attributed to work done in research neuroscientist Horace Magoun's laboratory. Before this finding, most scientists would focus on the diencephalon (and anterior midbrain) but not more caudally. Stimulation of the medial bulbar reticular formation in the pontine and midbrain tegmentum resulted disappearance of synchronized discharge and low-voltage fast activity. The effects were mediated by a thalamic projection system. This finding was a dramatic departure from the early philosophers' ascription of the awake soul to the ven

Effect of Motor Task on Cortex Brainstem Modulation: Preliminary Results.

Reticulospinal Tracts (RSTs) have divergent connections to multiple spinal segments that innervate many upper extremity muscles. Therefore, increased RST engagement can often lead to muscle coactivation across multiple limb joints. The RST originates from the reticular formation (RF) and receives projections from the cortex. This provides the anatomical basis for cortex-brainstem modulation. Currently, we know little about how cortex modulates the RF to control RST engagement during motor preparation for various motor tasks, such as tasks involving proximal and distal upper limb joint coordina

The Role of the Subnucleus Reticularis Dorsalis (SRD) in Pain Modulation: A Literature Review.

The subnucleus reticularis dorsalis (SRD), also known as the dorsal reticular nucleus (DRt) or dorsal medullary reticular nucleus (MdD), which resides at the caudal end of the medulla, plays a pivotal role in regulating pain perception. Despite extensive research efforts to unravel its mechanisms, the operational intricacies of SRD remain poorly understood. Advances in experimental methodologies such as brain imaging and chemogenetics have facilitated deeper investigations into the involvement of SRD in various pain disorders. This comprehensive review aims to analyze 36 years (1989-2024) of p

Topological Analysis of the Brainstem of the Australian Lungfish Neoceratodus forsteri.

This paper presents a survey of the cell masses in the brainstem of the Australian lungfish Neoceratodus forsteri, based ontransversely cut Bodian-stained serial sections, supplemented by immunohistochemical data from the recent literature. This study is intended to serve a double purpose. First it concludes and completes a series of publications on the structure of the brainstem in representative species of all groups of anamniote vertebrates. Within the framework of this comparative program the cell masses in the brainstem and their positional relations are analyzed in the light of the Herri

The reticular premotor neurons of the jaw muscle motor nuclei in the mallard (Anas platyrhynchos L.).

The trigeminal and facial motor nuclei in the mallard comprise several subnuclei which innervate tongue, jaw and other head muscles. The premotor cells of the subnuclei innervating jaw muscles are distributed in two longitudinal cell columns within the parvocellular reticular formation (RPc). The ventromedial part of RPc contains cells projecting to subnuclei innervating either jaw-closer muscles or jaw-opener muscles. In the dorsolateral part of RPc three subdivisions may be recognized: a rostral part which projects to two trigeminal subnuclei innervating jaw-closer muscles, an intermediate p

Transnasal ventral brainstem stimulation reverses anesthesia-induced unconsciousness in sheep.

BACKGROUND: Brainstem reticular formation (BRF) is crucially involved in regulating arousal, making it a potential target for reversing general anesthesia. The transnasal approach provides a minimally invasive access to the ventral brainstem. However, whether this approach can effectively modulate arousal remains unknown. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy of transnasal BRF electrical stimulation in reversing anesthesia-induced unconsciousness. METHODS: Three 12-month-old male sheep (40-50 kg) were implanted epidural/bone electrodes close to ventral brainstem via a transnasal approach. Unde

Whole-brain monosynaptic inputs and outputs of glutamatergic neurons of the vestibular nuclei complex in mice.

Vestibular nuclei complex (VN) glutamatergic neurons play a critical role in the multisensory and multimodal processing. The dysfunction of VN leads to a series of vestibular concurrent symptoms, such as disequilibrium, spatial disorientation, autonomic disorders and even emotion disorders. However, the reciprocal neural connectivity in the whole brain of VN glutamatergic neurons was incompletely understood. Here, we employed a cell-type-specific, cre-dependent, modified virus vector to retrogradely and anterogradely trace VN glutamatergic neurons in the VGLUT2-IRES-Cre mouse line. We identifi
