Patients with septo-optic dysplasia: General ophthalmologic assessment and retinal imaging.

BACKGROUND: To evaluate the functional development and, retinal and optic disc morphology using OCT in patients with septo-optic dysplasia (SOD). METHODS: This retrospective case series included patients diagnosed with SOD between 2007 and 2020. Ophthalmologic assessment included visual acuity (VA) and funduscopy at the initial and last presentation. Retinal imaging included OCT of the macula analyzing the retinal morphology, central retinal thickness volume (CRT) and ganglion cell layer (GCL). Also, scans of the optic nerve head were taken to evaluate the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) and

Retinal dysplasia mimicking intraocular tumor: MR imaging findings with histopathologic correlation.

We report a 6-month-old boy who presented with unilateral leukocoria, retinal detachment, and a retrolental mass in a microphthalmic eye based on retinal dysplasia with concurrent optic nerve aplasia. Dysplastic retinal tissue, a rare congenital defect, may create a clinical and radiologic picture of an intraocular mass closely resembling tumor tissue. MR imaging findings with histopathologic correlation are presented to facilitate discrimination of the more common causes of leukocoria.

Hereditary renal-retinal dysplasia and the medullary cystic disease-nephronophthisis complex.

Nine of 81 members of two families were found to have renal problems. Three patients in one family had renal-retinal dysplasia with probable recessive inheritance. Of the 6 patients in the second family, one received a kidney transplant from his brother who initially had no detectable renal abnormality but later developed renal failure. In this family, the mode of inheritance seems to be dominant. Hereditary renal-retinal dysplasia differs from medullary cystic disease and nephronophthisis in its pattern of uniformly recessive inheritance and its accompaniment by retinitis pigmentosa. Because

Profiling retinal biochemistry in the MPDZ mutant retinal dysplasia and degeneration chick: a model of human RP and LCA.

PURPOSE: Raman microscopy, a rapid nondestructive technique that profiles the composition of biological samples, was used to characterize retinal biochemistry in the retinal dysplasia and degeneration (rdd) and wild-type (wt) chick retina during retinogenesis and at hatching. METHODS: Embryonic day (E)13 and posthatch day (P)1 rdd and wt retinal cross-sections (n = 3 of each line at each age) were profiled using 633 helium-neon laser excitation. The biochemical composition was determined using computational analysis of the Raman spectra. In parallel histology, TUNEL and glial fibrillary acidi

Deletion of versican V0/V2 isoforms in mice leads to retinal dysplasia.

Versican, a chondroitin sulfate proteoglycan, is a component of the interphotoreceptor matrix (IPM) and vitreous body in both mouse and human eyes. Mutations in VCAN, the gene encoding the versican core protein, cause Wagner vitreoretinopathy, a disorder characterized by vitreous syneresis, progressive chorioretinal atrophy, and early-onset retinal detachment. Versican exists in four isoforms (V0, V1, V2, V3), which differ in their glycosaminoglycan (GAG) attachment domains. To investigate isoform-specific functions of versican in retinal development and homeostasis, we examined VCANtm1Zim mic

Bilateral retinal dysplasia and secondary glaucoma associated with homozygous protein C deficiency.

PURPOSE: Protein C deficiency is an autosomal recessive disorder, which predisposes the patient to potentially blinding and widespread lethal thromboembolic complications, especially in the homozygous type. We here report the first Korean case of ophthalmic involvement and its surgical treatment in homozygous protein C deficiency. METHODS: A 3.4kg, full term girl was born by normal delivery but showed bilateral leukocoria on day 2. Laboratory results disclosed a very low protein C activity level (10%) in the patient and moderately decreased levels in the other family members. Ophthalmic exami

Antibody deficiency, growth retardation, spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia and retinal dystrophy: a novel syndrome.

The clinical and laboratory combination of recurrent infections due to antibody deficiency, spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia, growth retardation and retinal dystrophy is novel. Four patients with strikingly similar phenotypes from three different families of diverse genetic backgrounds are described, suggesting a similar underlying genotype. Increased awareness of this syndrome will hopefully lead to the description of a larger number of affected individuals, which ultimately might be critical for its genetic characterization.

Congenital Cataracts and Microphakia with Retinal Dysplasia and Optic Nerve Hypoplasia in a Calf.

Case Description. A two-month-old, female, Aberdeen-Angus calf was presented for congenital cataracts and blindness in both eyes (OU). The dam had a reported history of visual defects (not specified) and had produced other affected calves (per owner history). Ophthalmic examination revealed mature bilateral cataracts, attenuation of the iridic granules, persistent pupillary membranes, and dyscoric pupils. Additionally, the calf had a poor body condition, prognathism, dome-shaped head, excessive nasal drainage, limb contracture, and fever. Histopathology of both eyes revealed lenticular degener

Coincidental retinal dysplasia in patients presenting with pseudohypopyon: a series of two cases.

Clinical diagnosis is always challenging in cases with atypical presentation. Herein, we present two cases which masqueraded as ocular infection/inflammation on presentation, were clinically suspicious for retinoblastoma, and histopathology revealed the diagnosis of retinal dysplasia. Case 1 had left corneal perforation with anterior chamber exudates on presentation. On ultrasound B-scan, ill-defined mass was noted, raising a suspicion of malignancy. MRI showed dilated ventricles with midline shift. Vitreous cytology was inconclusive. Enucleation was performed as malignancy could not be ruled

[Retinal and corneal dysplasias in the Yorkshire terrier and other dog breeds in Austria].

Mother and son of a Yorkshire Terrier family showed excessive multifocal retinal dysplasia (RD1) and geographical retinal dysplasia (RD2), intra- and preretinal hemorrhages partial and total retinal detachment (total RD/RD3), residues of the pupillary membrane and as a newness in this combination a geographical, subepithelial corneal opacity, composed of small dots. One, not examined son of the same litter was congenitally blind. Similar corneal opacities were also found in two Rough Collies affected with CEA, RD, and microphthalmia, a young German Wirehair Pointer with primary absolute glauco

Microphthalmia, retinal dysplasia, and anterior segment dysgenesis in a litter of Doberman Pinschers.

Blindness was found in 5 of 11 7-week-old Doberman Pinscher littermates. Each eye in the affected pups had moderate to marked corneal opacification, and there was variable microphthalmia. Gross and microscopic examination of the globes revealed multiple ocular defects highlighted by anterior segment and lenticular dysgenesis, hyperplastic primary vitreous, and retinal dysplasia. The cause of the ocular malformations was undetermined.

[A rare form of optical, choroidal and retinal dysplasia combined with an occipital encephalocele].

Report on the case of a female infant born with an occipital encephalocele and colobomas of the optic disc, chorioid, and retina. These clinical signs together with respiratory disturbances suggest a Joubert syndrome and a Pfeiffer syndrome. The differential diagnosis of these syndromes is discussed. An analysis of the clinical data indicates a genetic risk of 25% for further siblings.

Time-specific action of N-methyl-N-nitrosourea in the occurrence of retinal dysplasia and retinal degeneration in neonatal mice.

The morphologic response of neonatal mouse retina to the alkylating agent N-methyl-N-nitrosourea (MNU) was examined at different periods of retinal development. A dose of 60 mg/kg N-methyl-N-nitrosourea was injected intraperitoneally to neonatal C57BL mice at 0, 3, 5, 8, 11, 14, 17, and 20 days of age and to C3H mice at 0 days of age, and the retinas were examined sequentially. In the C57BL mice, MNU evoked a time-dependent occurrence of retinal dysplasia and retinal degeneration. With MNU treatment at day 0 and day 3 (the stage of retinal cell proliferation), retinal dysplasia characterized b

Ectopic proliferation contributes to retinal dysplasia in the juvenile zebrafish patched2 mutant eye.

PURPOSE: Patched is a well-studied tumor suppressor and negative regulator of the Hedgehog (Hh) pathway. Earlier work in this laboratory has shown that embryonic zebrafish patched2 (ptc2) mutant retinas possess an expanded ciliary marginal zone (CMZ) and phenotypes similar to those in human patients with basal cell naevus syndrome (BCNS), a congenital disorder linked to mutations in the human PTCH gene. This study extends the analysis of retinal structure and homeostasis in ptc2-/- mutants to juvenile stages, to determine whether Patched 2 function is essential in the postembryonic eye. METHO

X-linked recessive primary retinal dysplasia is linked to the Norrie disease locus.

X-linked primary retinal dysplasia (PRD) refers to an abnormal proliferation of retinal tissue causing either its neural elements or its glial tissue to form folds, giving rise to gliosis. A Jewish family of oriental origin was previously reported by Godel and Goodman, in which a total of five males suffer from different degrees of blindness. The authors postulated that the described findings are distinguished from Norrie disease, since in this case no clinical findings, other than those associated with the eyes, were noticed in the affected males. In addition, two of the carrier females exhib

Congenital blindness with ocular developmental anomalies, including retinal dysplasia, in Doberman Pinscher dogs.

Hereditary, congenital blindness was studied in 15 Doberman Pinscher pups. The eyes were smaller than normal, and there was complete absence of the anterior chamber, aphakia, retinal detachment, and dysplasia as well as an irregular swelling and partial depigmentation of the retinal pigment epithelial cells. It was concluded that the condition was inherited as a recessive, autosomal trait.
