BACKGROUND: Photodynamic therapy (PDT) with verteporfin is now the standard of care worldwide for the treatment of choroidal neovascularization, but has been used only rarely in those with subretinal neovascular membranes (SRNVM) due to type 2A idiopathic juxtafoveolar retinal telangiectasis (IJT). We performed a retrospective study to examine the outcome of patients treated with PDT for SRNVM secondary to IJT.
METHODS: Retrospective interventional case series of 7 eyes of 6 IJT patients with SRNVMs treated with PDT. Ophthalmic examination and fluorescein angiography were performed before tre

Two sisters had an unusual constellation of findings, including telangiectases [corrected] involving the face and limbs, unclassifiable spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia, hypothyroidism, and tractional retinal detachment preceded by retinal and iris neovascularization. To our knowledge, this combination of defects has not been previously documented in the literature.

Coats-like response refers to a condition where abnormal telangiectatic retinal vessels and aneurysms associated with subretinal exudation are seen in the setting of other ocular or systemic diseases. So far, it has been described with various ocular disorders like retinitis pigmentosa, chronic ischemic branch retinal vein obstruction and pars planitis. A man in his 30s presented with a 1-month history of diminution of vision in the left eye. On examination, the left eye fundus showed extensive subretinal exudation along with evidence of old and recent periphlebitis. Fluorescein angiography re

Coats' disease is an idiopathic disorder defined by an abnormal development of retinal vessels with a progressive deposition of intraretinal or subretinal exudates, leading to exudative retinal detachment. The most difficult task is to differentiate Coats' disease from retinoblastoma. We present a rare case of Coats' disease diagnosed in a 3-year-old girl. From the age of 6 months, the girl was followed up 2 times a year at the Department of Ophthalmology, Hospital of Lithuanian University of Health Sciences, due to congenital convergent strabismus and refractive errors. At the age of 3.6 year

A 6-year-old boy presented with neovascular glaucoma secondary to total retinal detachment. Magnetic resonance imaging findings suggested diffuse infiltrating retinoblastoma. Enucleation was subsequently performed and led to a final histopathological diagnosis of advanced Coats' disease. Diffuse infiltrating retinoblastoma and advanced Coats' disease can be indistinguishable from each other on magnetic resonance imaging.

PURPOSE: To describe and quantify the abnormalities of the retinal capillary plexuses using optical coherence tomography angiography in Coats disease.
METHODS: Retrospective study. Eleven eyes of 11 patients with Coats disease (9 men and two women aged 32-80 years) compared with nine fellow eyes and 11 healthy control eyes. Horizontal bands of contiguous 3 × 3 mm optical coherence tomography angiograms of the superficial vascular plexus and deep capillary complex were acquired from the optic disk to 6 mm temporal to the fovea, through areas with telangiectasia visible on fluorescein angiograp

PURPOSE: To analyze choroidal structure using subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFCT) and choroidal vascularity index (CVI) in Macular Telangiectasia (MacTel) type 2.
METHODS: Medical records of 43 eyes with MacTel type 2 and 30 sex and age-matched healthy eyes were retrospectively reviewed. Their SFCT and CVI were measured using the SS-OCT scan passing through the central fovea and image binarization. The difference in baseline SFCT and CVI from each group and their yearly changes up to second year of follow up were analyzed. The baseline characteristics of the groups were also compared.

Pathogenic variants in the genes encoding serine palmitoyl transferase (SPTLC1 or SPTLC2) are the most common causes of the rare peripheral nerve disorder Hereditary Sensory Neuropathy Type 1 (HSN1). Macular telangiectasia type 2 (MacTel), a retinal disorder associated with disordered serine-glycine metabolism, has been described in some patients with HSN1. This study aims to further investigate this association in a cohort of people with HSN1. Fourteen patients with a clinically and genetically confirmed diagnosis of HSN1 from the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery (NHNN, Univer

Coats disease is a rare idiopathic retinal vascular disorder characterized by telangiectatic and aneurysmal retinal vessels, intraretinal and subretinal lipid exudation, and variable progression to exudative retinal detachment, secondary glaucoma, and severe visual loss. This narrative review summarizes the clinical spectrum, diagnostic evaluation, imaging features, and contemporary management of Coats disease, with emphasis on areas of diagnostic uncertainty and treatment controversy. The disease most commonly affects young males and is classically unilateral; however, rare bilateral presenta

This meta-analysis evaluates optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) results in macular telangiectasia (MacTel) type 2, a rare retinal condition marked by vascular abnormalities. We analyzed 26 studies for OCTA findings in MacTel type 2. We examined parameters like best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), foveal avascular zone (FAZ), and superficial and deep capillary plexus densities. The pooled mean BCVA was 0.37 log of minimum angle of resolution (20/50). FAZ enlargement was observed, with a pooled mean FAZ size of 0.39 mm 2 . Foveal deep vascular density (FDVD) and parafoveal superfici

Retinoblastomas represent 6% of all malignant tumors in children under 5 years old, which untreated lead to blindness in the affected eye and death due to metastases. The main symptoms are leukocoria and strabismus, which if possible, always necessitate a clarification within 1 week for exclusion of a retinoblastoma. The most frequent differential diagnoses are Coats' disease and persistent fetal vasculature (PFV) as well as other intraocular tumors, in particular astrocytomas. Systemic chemotherapy, if necessary in combination with laser hyperthermia, local chemotherapy and brachytherapy are

Macular telangiectasia type 2 is characterized by atrophic alterations of the central retina which is accompanied by a defined vascular phenotype. The disease manifests within an oval central retinal area the size of approximately two disc diameters, with a topographic predisposition temporal to the foveal center. Funduscopy reveals reduced retinal transparency, crystalline deposits, mildly ectatic capillaries, thickened venules and retinal pigment plaques. Secondary neovascularization and macular holes may occur during the disease course. Fluorescein angiography usually shows a diffuse leakag

This report examines a case of a novel association of Coats-like retinopathy and 18p deletion syndrome (18p-) and proposes a pathogenic mechanism for the association. A 4-year-old boy with 18p- presented with vision loss due to abnormal retinal vasculature associated with macular lipid exudate and exudative retinal detachment. Fluorescein angiography confirmed peripheral capillary nonperfusion, telangiectasias, and exudation. The left eye was normal. The patient was treated with indirect laser panretinal photocoagulation. Examination 6 years post-treatment revealed stable visual acuity at 20/7
