Primary mucinous cystadenocarcinoma of the retroperitoneum. Report of a case and literature review.

Primary retroperitoneal mucinous cystadenocarcinoma (PRMC) is a rare tumour, similar to its ovarian counterpart but without any evidence of ovarian, pancreatic or another extra-retroperitoneal origin. Histogenesis of this neoplasm remains uncertain. Mucinous or coelomic metaplasia of retroperitoneal mesothelium has been recently proposed as its origin. In a 43-year-old woman with a 15-cm cystic lesion in the right retroperitoneum mucinous cystadenocarcinoma was diagnosed, and no primary tumour was identified. Two peritoneal endometriotic foci were found on further surgery. We suggest a common

[Differential sonographic diagnosis of retroperitoneal tumors].

Presentation of the sonographic findings of 170 retroperitoneal masses: primary and metastatic neoplasms, abdominal aortic aneurysms, hematomas and abszesses. A typical diagnostically reliable sonographic pattern was seen only in retroperitoneal hematomas in the area of the psoas and in aortic aneurysms, provided the aorta itself could be visualized. In all the other masses the ultrasound pattern did not provide reliable clues as to their histology; ultrasound, however, proved to be highly successful in demonstrating the presence and location of the lesion.

Retroperitoneal teratoma presenting as an abdominal-pelvic mass.

Nonovarian teratomas are relatively common neoplasms in children, but are rarely seen in adults. A case of a large retroperitoneal teratoma in a 42-year-old woman is presented. The 21.5-kg tumor originated in the retroperitoneal space inferior to the origin of the superior mesenteric artery, and displaced the contents of the entire abdominal cavity. The duodenum, pancreas, and transverse colon mesentery were incorporated into the tumor's pseudocapsule. Evaluation and operative management are described. Diagnosis and pathogenesis of nonovarian teratomas are reviewed.

Paratesticular rhabdomyosarcomas and leiomyosarcomas: a clinicopathological review.

One case of embryonal paratesticular sarcoma and 2 cases of leiomyosarcomas are reported. The 13-year-old boy with embryonal sarcoma is well after an orchiectomy and high ligation of the spermatic cord followed by radiotherapy and chemotherapy. A 66-year-old man has been doing well after orchiectomy and hemiscrotectomy for a paratesticular leiomyosarcoma. The third patient had a highly pleomorphic leiomyosarcoma and died 2 months postoperatively. The clinical and histological diagnosis of paratesticular rhabdomyosarcomas and leiomyosarcomas is reviewed and the various therapeutic approaches to

Laparoscopic excision of primary retroperitoneal mucinous cystadenoma and malignant predicting factors derived from literature review.

INTRODUCTION: Primary retroperitoneal mucinous cystic neoplasm is very rare and its histogenesis is unclear. PRESENTATION OF CASE: This paper presents the case of a 31-year-old female in whom an incidentally detected retroperitoneal cystic mass, 6.5cm in size, was successfully resected through laparoscopic approach. Pathologic examination revealed a mucinous cystadenoma. The postoperative course was uneventful, and the patient remained free of recurrence six months after surgery. DISCUSSION: Literature review showed that male sex (p=0.019), and solid nodules in cysts (p<0.001) were both sign

Retroperitoneal fibrosis: unusual localization.

Six cases of retroperitoneal fibrosis, each with a different pathogenesis and unusual localization were observed from 1980 to 1996. Four patients had had previous surgery for a neoplasm, one patient had idiopathic retroperitoneal fibrosis, and the last patient was hardly classifiable due to the complexity of the clinical pattern. The mean survival in 3 patients with malignant retroperitoneal fibrosis was 7 months. Two patients treated with medical therapy are still alive and in good clinical condition. The aspecificity of the symptoms makes early diagnosis difficult. CT and NMR are essential p

Laparoscopic resection of a retroperitoneal ancient schwannoma: a case report and review of the literature.

Schwannomas are benign tumors that arise from neural sheath Schwann cells. Solitary benign schwannomas are generally located in the head and neck, often along the cranial nerves, and are a particularly rare neoplasm among tumors of the retroperitoneal space. A 67-year-old man undergoing a general health check was incidentally found to have a mass beside the left kidney. Computed tomography (CT) revealed a cystic adrenal mass located cephalad to the left kidney. Retroperitoneoscopic resection of the retroperitoneal mass was performed. The pathological diagnosis was retroperitoneal benign schwan

[Retroperitoneal fibrosis--clinical response to steroid treatment].

Retroperitoneal fibrosis is an inflammatory disease, which is either idiopathic or secondary to infection, neoplasm, hemorrhage, aortic aneurysm or drugs. This is a rare disease usually presenting constitutional symptoms, abdominal, back or flank pain and urinary frequency. Treatment includes surgical relief of urethral obstruction and corticosteroids. There is no clear evidence of the beneficial effect of corticosteroids treatment on the course of retroperitoneal fibrosis. We report a patient diagnosed with retroperitoneal fibrosis with an unusual presentation--uncontrolled HTN and renal fail

Conservative management of testicular endodermal sinus tumor in childhood.

Endodermal sinus tumor is the most common testicular neoplasm in childhood. The management of children with this neoplasm remains controversial. We have treated prospectively 5 children with stage I endodermal sinus tumor with limited surgery and no adjuvant therapy. The median patient age at diagnosis was 21 months (range 5 to 24 months). All children underwent an inguinal orchiectomy with high ligation of the spermatic cord. Retroperitoneal node dissection was not performed in any case and no child received adjuvant chemotherapy or radiation therapy. All patients were well without evidence o

Presentation of idiopathic retroperitoneal fibrosis in the pediatric population.

Idiopathic fibrosis of the retroperitoneum is rare in childhood. The authors describe an 11-year-old boy who presented with progressive renal failure, bilateral hydronephrosis, hypertension, and elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) owing to retroperitoneal fibrosis. Ureterolysis was performed with improvement in his creatinine level and blood pressure. The soft tissue mass consisted of dense collagenous fibers consistent with retroperitoneal fibrosis. Postoperatively, he received steroids and azathioprine. Retroperitoneal fibrosis in the pediatric population is rare with only 23 cases

Primary retroperitoneal mucinous cystadenocarcinoma with transition from the mesothelium.

INTRODUCTION: Mucinous cystic neoplasms are uncommon among the tumors that develop in the retroperitoneum. We report a case of primary retroperitoneal mucinous cystadenocarcinoma with pathological considerations. CASE PRESENTATION: A 47-year-old woman complaining of abdominal discomfort presented at our hospital. Abdominal computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging showed a large cystic tumor with small solid nodules located in the right retroperitoneum. The tumor was completely removed and the microscopic findings were consistent with primary retroperitoneal mucinous cystadenocarcino

Penile Mondor's disease after anterolateral retroperitoneal approach for lumbar fracture.

This is a rare case of thrombosis of the dorsal vein of the penis (Mondor's disease) occurred after an anterior-lateral retroperitoneal approach for a vertebral stabilisation in thoracolumbar vertebral fracture. Potential causes are traumatism, neoplasms, excessive sexual activity or abstinence. Although penile Mondor's disease is a clinical diagnosis, ultrasound imaging is the gold standard to confirm it. In the reported case, 1 week after neurosurgical retroperitoneal procedure of vertebral stabilisation, the patient complained of a painful cord-like mass midshaft of penis. The diagnosis was

Does right-sided varicocele indicate a right-sided kidney tumor?

Varicocele is a dilation of the pampiniform venous plexus, mainly affecting the left side of the scrotum. In rare cases, however, the right side is affected. When this occurs, a retroperitoneal disease should be suspected, such as right-sided renal neoplasm. The present case report highlights the importance of right-sided varicocele in the diagnostic investigation of neoplasm of the right kidney.

Huge Intra-abdominal Retroperitoneal Spindle Cell Mass in a Young Adult: A Report of a Rare Case and Literature Review.

GI stromal tumors (GISTs) are the most common mesenchymal neoplasms in the GI tract. GISTs are malignancies that typically originate in the digestive system, most often in the stomach and small intestine. Histopathological classification identifies three types of GISTs: spindle cell, epithelioid, and mixed. We present a case of a huge intra-abdominal retroperitoneal mass in a 23-year-old female with no notable medical or surgical history. She experienced dysphagia and early satiety for one year but did not seek medical attention until presenting at our clinic. Her abdomen was distended, soft,

Spontaneous retroperitoneal hemorrhage: a diagnostic challenge.

Spontaneous retroperitoneal hemorrhage can present a difficult diagnostic dilemma. We present 4 illustrative cases within the last 2 years at our institutions. Excluding traumatic injury to the retroperitoneum and abdominal aortic aneurysms, about 75 per cent of the cases are related to neoplasms or vascular anomalies. An awareness of predisposing disease states is important. A high index of suspicion and an aggressive diagnostic approach are necessary. If evaluation does not disclose an etiology for retroperitoneal hemorrhage then non-operative management may be considered. This is especially

Ileal carcinoid tumor complicated by retroperitoneal fibrosis and a prolactinoma.

A patient with mid-gut carcinoid tumor and the unusual complication of retroperitoneal fibrosis was also found to have a prolactinoma. This case brings the number of reported mid-gut carcinoid tumors complicated by a second endocrine neoplasm to five. Three of the second tumors were parathyroid in origin, and the fourth was an insulinoma. In view of the rarity of second tumors and in the absence of documented familial occurrence, it is inappropriate to exhaustively study each person with mid-gut carcinoid tumor, or their families, for a second endocrine neoplasm; however, physicians caring for

Retroperitoneal leiomyoma of gynecologic type: a case report and review of the litterature.

Retroperitoneal leiomyomas are rare benign tumors with smooth muscle differentiation, with only ~1001 cases reported in the English literature to date. Because of its scarcity and non-specific presentation, the preoperative diagnosis might be challenging. On histology, these neoplasms share the same macroscopic, morphological and phenotypic features with uterine leiomyoma; thus, they are referred to as leiomyoma of gynecologic type. Herein, we describe a case of a voluminous retroperitoneal leiomyoma in a 51-year-old woman with a history of total hysterectomy to raise awareness about this cond

A retroperitoneal bronchogenic cyst mimicking adrenal tumour in an adult: is differential diagnosis truly possible?

Bronchogenic cysts are developmental abnormalities of the primitive foregut resulting from aberrant budding from the ventral diverticulum. A retroperitoneal position for a bronchial cyst is extremely unusual and should be differentiated from other neoplastic lesions. Although histologically they can be differentiated from other lesions, bronchial cysts may show various pathological patterns of differentiation that may cause confusion in differentiating them from cystic teratomas. This is a case of a retroperitoneal bronchogenic cyst featuring uncommon histological findings, which raises the qu

Clinicopathological features of unusual vascular lesions of the pelvis, retroperitoneum and colon in females: a report of five cases and review of the literature.

Vascular lesions comprise benign and malignant neoplasms as well as non-neoplastic conditions that may be located in various sites but only rarely in the pelvis or the retroperitoneum. In our study we describe five diverse and unusual cases of vascular lesions of the pelvis, retroperitoneum and colon in female patients: a case of retroperitoneal angiosarcoma, pelvic hemangioendothelioma, pelvic angiomyxoma, retroperitoneal lymphangioleiomyomatosis and a case of diffuse cavernous hemangiomatosis of the colon, with emphasis on their clinicopathological features and differential diagnosis. Retroperitoneal laparoscopic partial nephrectomy with segmental renal artery clamping for cancer of the left upper calyx: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Currently, the standard treatment for renal pelvis carcinoma is radical nephroureterectomy with bladder cuff excision. To describe the feasibility of retroperitoneal laparoscopic partial nephrectomy with segmental renal artery clamping for cancer of renal pelvis, we report this special case for the first time. CASE PRESENTATION: A 67-year-old woman received this operation. Preoperative ureteroscopy revealed a papillary neoplasm with a pedicle in the upper calyx of the left kidney. After entering the retroperitoneal space and dissociating the renal artery and renal vein, the target
