Introduction: Globally, there are 370 million children receiving school meals every day. Coverage is least in low-income countries, where the need is greatest and where program costs are viewed as high in comparison with the benefits to public health alone. Here we explore the policy implications of including the returns of school feeding to other sectors in an economic analysis. Methods: We develop an economic evaluation methodology to estimate the costs and benefits of school feeding programs across four sectors: health and nutrition; education; social protection; and the local agricultural

BACKGROUND: Returning to learn following a concussion is the process of managing a student's recovery during the school day by implementation of academic supports with varying intensity. Due to a lack of consensus or even guidance on Return to Learn, this paper set out to establish cross discipline consensus on some essential elements of Return to Learn using a Delphi method.
METHODS: Sixteen national organizations participated in a Delphi process to reach consensus on overarching themes of Return to Learn focused on: returning a student to school, composition of the school-based concussion m

BACKGROUND: Current return to learn (RTL) after concussion guidelines lack specificity for individualized student care, limiting potential for adoption and implementation. We used a community-engaged research framework to develop and evaluate the implementation of a student-centered care plan that assists school personnel in facilitating RTL.
METHODS: We used best-practice RTL guidelines and input from administrators and medical experts to iteratively develop a flexible student-centered care plan. Thirteen schools participated. Coding completion of care plans indicated feasibility and fidelit

We examined the association between the severity of acute concussion symptoms and time to return to school and to sports in National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III collegiate athletes. We hypothesized that students with the lowest burden of acute symptoms, measured in the first 72 h, would have the fastest return to school and sports and those with the highest burden of symptoms would have the slowest return to school and sports. This injury surveillance cohort included 808 athletes from 11 NCAA Division III colleges who sustained a concussion between 2014 and 2019. Athlet

IMPORTANCE: Sport-related concussions (SRC) can significantly impact students' attendance and academic performance, highlighting the importance of gradual return-to-learn protocols for recovery. Understanding the association between missed school days and recovery, especially across genders, is vital for effective concussion management in high school athletes.
OBJECTIVES: To describe missed school days in high school athletes with SRC and to determine associations between missed school days and authorized clearance to return to competition; secondarily, to determine whether school days missed

We examined the association between the severity of acute concussion symptoms and time to return to school and to sports in adolescent student athletes. We hypothesized that there would be an association between the severity of acute symptoms experienced in the first 72 hours and functional recovery such that adolescents with the lowest burden of acute symptoms would have the fastest return to school and sports and those with the highest burden of symptoms would have the slowest return to school and sports. This injury surveillance cohort included 375 adolescent student athletes aged 14-19 yea

Concussion is a common injury among adolescents. It is unknown how a concussion affects driving behavior and performance in adolescents. Although there are guidelines for return to learn, exercise, and sports that school nurses can help support in school, little is known about return to driving after concussion. The goal of this integrative review was to summarize the current literature on return to driving after concussion in adolescents. Six articles published between 2016 and 2020 were included in the review. Physicians and nurse practitioners find providing driving recommendations to adole

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether earlier time to initiation of aerobic exercise following acute concussion is associated with time to full return to (1) sport and (2) school or work.
METHODS: A retrospective stratified propensity score survival analysis of acute (≤14 days) concussion was used to determine whether time (days) to initiation of aerobic exercise post-concussion was associated with, both, time (days) to full return to (1) sport and (2) school or work.
RESULTS: A total of 253 acute concussions [median (IQR) age, 17.0 (15.0-20.0) years; 148 (58.5%) males] were included in this study

PURPOSE: To use current state department of health regulations regarding exclusion of students with conjunctivitis from school as a starting point in developing uniform recommendations for schools.
METHODS: State departments of health were asked to state their policy regarding when a child with conjunctivitis may return to school. This information was collated and examined for trends. The results were compared with current literature on infectious conjunctivitis.
RESULTS: Of the 43 states that responded, 7 allow children with conjunctivitis to remain in school, 8 allow their return once anti

BACKGROUND: Although parents play an instrumental role in youth concussion management, few studies have qualitatively explored youth concussion recovery from the parents' perspective. This study explored parents' experiences with and perceptions of their child's recovery from concussion, particularly with regards to the return-to-school process.
METHODS: We conducted 11 face-to-face semi-structured interviews with the parents of concussed youth aged 11 to 17 years between October 2018 and April 2019. We used the methods of open coding, axial coding, and selective coding to analyze the data.

PURPOSE: Although return to learn, exercise, and sports have evidence-based guidelines, there is limited research investigating return to driving after concussion. The purpose was to characterize and compare adolescent driving behaviors after concussion.
METHODS: Using the Minds Matter Concussion Registry, we queried data of adolescents, aged 16-19 years, diagnosed with a concussion ≤28 days of injury and seen between January 31, 2017 and August 31, 2018 at the specialty care concussion program. Outcomes included patient report of: changes postinjury driving behaviors; Post-Concussion Symptom

Concussion is a mild traumatic brain injury causing temporary neurologic dysfunction. Symptoms following concussion are variable and generally are expected to resolve within about 1 month, but some patients experience persistent and prolonged symptoms. An early return to safe, symptom-limited activity is now favored, using targeted rehabilitation and treatments. Accommodations may be needed to facilitate return-to-school and work following concussion. Athletes should not be cleared for a full return to sport until they have recovered from a concussion and completed a return-to-play progression

Prior research provides little guidance on how to support return to school post-concussion. Peer support may be one strategy to enable adolescents to return to school post-concussion. The purpose of this study was to explore what high school students preferred in a school-based peer support program post-concussion. We conducted a qualitative instrumental case study in one high school in Calgary, Canada. Seven semi-structured focus groups were conducted with 53 high school students (16 boys, 36 girls, 1 preferring not to disclose gender; median age = 16 years, range = 15-18 years). All adolesce

INTRODUCTION: Academic recovery following concussion has been defined in various contexts, however, these definitions vary considerably leading to heterogenous data and limited application. Standardized definitions have also been published, though their formation are not transparently described. Therefore, this research aimed to report the various operational definitions of return-to-learn, return-to-school, return-to-class, and return-to-academics found within the literature and propose evidence-based definitions for return-to-learn (RTL).
METHODS: We searched PubMed and ScienceDirect for el

INTRODUCTION: Attending school and working are consistently associated with positive outcomes for juvenile offenders returning to the community.
METHODS: Using longitudinal data from the Pathways to Desistance Study, we used structural equation modeling to test whether better school experiences while incarcerated was positively connected to adjustment upon release among serious juvenile offenders (91% male) in the U.S. Adjustment was assessed as attending school for 310 legal minors (<18 years), and engaging in work for 259 emerging adults (≥18 years), as well as self-reported delinquency for

The objective of this study was to determine whether adolescents with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) have prolonged return to school and sports following concussion compared to those without ADHD and whether medication status or concussion history is associated with recovery time. We hypothesized that having ADHD would not be associated with longer recovery time. This prospective observational cohort study, conducted between 2014 and 2019, examined concussion recovery among school sponsored athletics throughout Maine, USA. The sample included 623 adolescents, aged 14-19 years

Attachment and Psychological Distress in Adolescents from Schools and Care Practices During and After the Covid-19 Pandemic The COVID-19 pandemic had a substantial impact on the mental health of children and adolescents. Internalizing symptoms such as anxiety and depression emerged early on, particularly among those with high pre-pandemic vulnerability. This study investigates the development of psychological difficulties (internalizing, externalizing, and social problems) among adolescents in rural areas after returning to in-person schooling, comparing a non-clinical school-based sample with

BACKGROUND: Destabilizing shoulder injuries are common in high school American football players; however, the rate of recurrent glenohumeral instability and return to play after arthroscopic labral stabilization surgery remains unknown.
PURPOSE/HYPOTHESIS: The purpose of this study was to determine the rate of recurrent instability on return to competitive high school football after arthroscopic shoulder labral stabilization and capsulorrhaphy procedures. It was hypothesized that the instability rate would be greater in players with more years of eligibility remaining (YER) to play at the hig
