Reward processing and psychopathic traits in children.

Growing evidence has suggested that the mechanisms underlying the 3 dimensions of psychopathic traits, including grandiose-manipulative, callous-unemotional, and daring-impulsive, are different. As yet, the neurobiological correlates of each dimension have not been fully understood. In this study, we examined if reward processing deficits were differentially associated with these traits, and whether social adversity moderated these relationships. Pre-ejection period (PEP) was assessed in children between 8 and 10 years of age from the community (N = 340, Mage = 9.06, SD = .60; 48.2% boys) whil

Learning Contextual Reward Expectations for Value Adaptation.

Substantial evidence indicates that subjective value is adapted to the statistics of reward expected within a given temporal context. However, how these contextual expectations are learned is poorly understood. To examine such learning, we exploited a recent observation that participants performing a gambling task adjust their preferences as a function of context. We show that, in the absence of contextual cues providing reward information, an average reward expectation was learned from recent past experience. Learning dependent on contextual cues emerged when two contexts alternated at a fast

Gut-brain nutrient sensing in food reward.

For the past several decades, vagal and hormonal gut-brain negative feedback signaling mechanisms that promote satiety and subsequent suppression of food intake have been explored. In addition, a separate positive feedback process termed "appetition," involving postoral signaling from the gut to the brain, has been shown to promote food intake and produce flavor-nutrient preference conditioning. Afferent fibers emerging from the vagus nerve form the main pathway by which information is relayed from the abdominal viscera to the hindbrain and eventually other higher brain regions involved in foo

A non-reward attractor theory of depression.

A non-reward attractor theory of depression is proposed based on the operation of the lateral orbitofrontal cortex and supracallosal cingulate cortex. The orbitofrontal cortex contains error neurons that respond to non-reward for many seconds in an attractor state that maintains a memory of the non-reward. The human lateral orbitofrontal cortex is activated by non-reward during reward reversal, and by a signal to stop a response that is now incorrect. Damage to the human orbitofrontal cortex impairs reward reversal learning. Not receiving reward can produce depression. The theory proposed is t

[Chronic pain : Perception, reward and neural processing].

Many chronic pain syndromes are characterized by enhanced perception of painful stimuli as well as alterations in cortical processing in sensory and motor regions. In this review article the alterations in muscle pain and neuropathic pain are described. Alterations in patients with fibromyalgia and chronic back pain are described as examples for musculoskeletal pain and also in patients with phantom limb pain after amputation and complex regional pain syndrome as examples for neuropathic pain. In addition to altered pain perception, cumulative evidence on alterations in the processing of rewar

Single pulse TMS differentially modulates reward behavior.

Greater knowledge of cortical brain regions in reward processing may set the stage for using transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) as a treatment in patients with avolition, apathy or other drive-related symptoms. This study examined the effects of single pulse (sp) TMS to two reward circuit targets on drive in healthy subjects. Fifteen healthy subjects performed the monetary incentive delay task (MID) while receiving fMRI-guided spTMS to either inferior parietal lobe (IPL) or supplemental motor area (SMA). The study demonstrated decreasing reaction times (RT) for increasing reward. It also

Reward responsiveness and fatigue in multiple sclerosis.

BACKGROUND: Fatigue is a common symptom in individuals with multiple sclerosis (MS). To date, the pathophysiology of fatigue in MS remains ill-understood; however, converging evidence seems to suggest that a key factor in fatigue development might be the dysregulation of neuropsychological processes underpinning the evaluation of the rewarding outcomes of actions. OBJECTIVES: To explore the relationship between reward-related cognition and fatigue in MS and to explore the usefulness of reward perception testing to predict the efficacy of monoamine-modulating drugs on fatigue. METHODS: The st

Dysfunctional reward circuitry in obsessive-compulsive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is primarily conceived as an anxiety disorder but has features resembling addictive behavior. Patients with OCD may develop dependency upon compulsive behaviors because of the rewarding effects following reduction of obsession-induced anxiety. Reward processing is critically dependent on ventral striatal-orbitofrontal circuitry and brain imaging studies in OCD have consistently shown abnormal activation within this circuitry. This is the first functional imaging study to investigate explicitly reward circuitry in OCD. METHODS: Brain activity dur

Neural reward processing under dopamine agonists: imaging.

Impulse control disorders (ICDs) are increasingly reported as a considerable side-effect of treatment with dopaminergic medication (both levodopa and dopamine agonists (DA)). ICDs together with punding are described within the entity of dopamine dysregulation syndrome along with immediate reward seeking and addictive behaviors. The brain functions involved in reward processing in general and their modulation by medication can be characterized by neuropsychological assessments and underlying neurobiology can be investigated by functional neuroimaging techniques such as functional magnetic reson

[Molecular mechanisms of the brain reward system].

The brain possesses a reward system which produces positive emotion. To reveal the mechanisms of the brain reward system, investigation of mechanisms underlying actions of substances of abuse can be one of the promising research approaches. Various behavioral tests using animals and methods in genomic science are also useful for these studies. I introduce our findings obtained by these ideas and techniques as follows: (i) Inhibition of methamphetamine preference by G-protein activated inwardly rectifying potassium (GIRK) channel inhibitors. (ii) Essential role of NMDA receptor channel GluN2D s

Reward learning in normal and mutant Drosophila.

Hungry fruit flies can be trained by exposing them to two chemical odorants, one paired with the opportunity to feed on 1 M sucrose. On later testing, when given a choice between odorants the flies migrate specifically toward the sucrose-paired odor. This appetitively reinforced learning by the flies is similar in strength and character to previously demonstrated negatively reinforced learning, but it differs in several properties. Both memory consolidation and memory decay proceed relatively slowly after training with sucrose reward. Consolidation of learned information into anesthesia-resist

Anticipation of reward in a nonaversive differential conditioning paradigm and the brain reward system: an event-related fMRI study.

Findings from animal as well as human neuroimaging studies suggest that reward delivery is associated with the activation of subcortical limbic and prefrontal brain regions, including the thalamus, the striatum, the anterior cingulate and the prefrontal cortex. The aim of the present study was to explore if these reward-sensitive regions are also activated during the anticipation of reinforcers that vary with regard to their motivational value. A differential conditioning paradigm was performed, with the presentation of a rewarded reaction time task serving as the unconditioned stimulus (US).

Reward Behavior Disengagement, a Neuroeconomic Model-Based Objective Measure of Reward Pathology in Depression: Findings from the EMBARC Trial.

The probabilistic reward task (PRT) has identified reward learning impairments in those with major depressive disorder (MDD), as well as anhedonia-specific reward learning impairments. However, attempts to validate the anhedonia-specific impairments have produced inconsistent findings. Thus, we seek to determine whether the Reward Behavior Disengagement (RBD), our proposed economic augmentation of PRT, differs between MDD participants and controls, and whether there is a level at which RBD is high enough for depressed participants to be considered objectively disengaged. Data were gathered as

Reward processing in children with affective dysregulation.

BACKGROUND: Affective dysregulation (AD) in children is characterized by irritability, anger, and frequent intense temper outbursts. Considerable evidence implies altered processing of frustration about missed rewards, but few studies investigated the preceding and thus potentially predictive reward anticipation and initial delivery processing in children with AD. METHODS: A total of 103 children aged 8-12 years (50 with AD and 53 without AD) were examined during a monetary reward anticipation task with event-related potential (ERP) components resolving reward anticipation (cue-CNV [Contingen

Disentangling Uncertainty Signals in Neural Reward Dynamics.

Most decisions are made under uncertainty, which manifests in either risk (know probability) or ambiguity (unknown probability). However, it is not well understood how the two forms of uncertainty signal differ in value-based decision-making. This ERP study aimed to disentangle them by examining how their neural reward dynamics are influenced by individual attitudes and their derived subjective value (SV). Thirty-six participants performed a wheel-of-fortune task while EEG activity was recorded, followed by a lottery task where their attitudes toward risk and ambiguity were assessed. These att

Orgasms, sexual pleasure, and opioid reward mechanisms.

INTRODUCTION: Sexual activity produces pleasure related to sexual arousal, desire, and genitosensory and erogenous stimulation. Orgasms produce a whole brain and body rush of ecstatic pleasure followed by relaxation and refractoriness. This pleasure results from the activation of neurochemical reward pathways in the brain. This is differentiated by spinal pathways that control climax, the particular motor movements of the pelvic floor and the experience of tension release. OBJECTIVES: To relate the activation of key neurochemical reward and bonding systems, notably dopamine, oxytocin, and opi

Orexin-mediated motivated arousal and reward seeking.

The neuromodulator orexin has been identified as a key factor for motivated arousal including recent evidence that sleep deprivation-induced enhancement of reward behavior is modulated by orexin. While orexin is not necessary for either reward or arousal behavior, orexin neurons' broad projections, ability to sense the internal state of the animal, and high plasticity of signaling in response to natural rewards and drugs of abuse may underlie heightened drug seeking, particularly in a subset of highly motivated reward seekers. As such, orexin receptor antagonists have gained deserved attention

Dysfunctional Brain Reward System in Child Obesity.

Eating habits leading to obesity may reflect nonhomeostatic behavior based on excessive immediate-reward seeking. However, it is currently unknown to what extent excess weight is associated with functional alterations in the brain's reward system in children. We tested the integrity of reward circuits using resting-state functional connectivity magnetic resonance imaging in a population of 230 children aged 8-12 years. The major components of the reward system were identified within the ventral striatum network defined on the basis of the nucleus accumbens connectivity pattern. The functional

Evolution of honest reward signal in flowers.

Some flowering plants signal the abundance of their rewards by changing their flower colour, scent or other floral traits as rewards are depleted. These floral trait changes can be regarded as honest signals of reward states for pollinators. Previous studies have hypothesized that these signals are used to maintain plant-level attractiveness to pollinators, but the evolutionary conditions leading to the development of honest signals have not been well investigated from a theoretical basis. We examined conditions leading to the evolution of honest reward signals in flowers by applying a theoret
