Evaluation of nitric oxide scavenging activity, in vitro and ex vivo, of selected medicinal plants traditionally used in inflammatory diseases.

Steroidal and non-steroidal antiinflammatory drugs, despite their various side effects, are in great demand worldwide. Alternatively, herbal formulations provide relief to a large percentage of the population suffering from inflammatory diseases. Therefore, such practices need to be rationalized through a mechanistic approach. Thus, four traditional medicinal plants, namely Ventilago madraspatana Gaertn., Rubia cordifolia Linn., Lantana camara Linn. and Morinda citrifolia Linn. were selected for a study on the inhibition of nitric oxide (NO*), a key mediator in the phenomenon of inflammation,

Citrus unshiu fermented vinegar and Hovenia dulcis fruit extract formulation enhances alcohol metabolism and attenuates alcohol-induced hepatic injury.

Chronic or excessive ethanol consumption leads to the accumulation of ethanol and its reactive metabolite acetaldehyde, resulting in oxidative stress, hepatocellular injury, and hangover symptoms. In this study, the hepatoprotective and alcohol-metabolizing effects of SKM, a mixture of Citrus unshiu fruit vinegar, Hovenia dulcis fruit extract, and glucose, were evaluated in both rat models and a human clinical trial. In acute ethanol-exposed rats, SKM administration significantly reduced blood ethanol and acetaldehyde concentrations compared with the alcohol group. In chronic ethanol-fed rats,

Semen hoveniae extract ameliorates alcohol-induced chronic liver damage in rats via modulation of the abnormalities of gut-liver axis.

BACKGROUND: Hovenia dulcis Thunb. is considered as a traditional herbal medicine that has been used in the treatment for ethanol-induced liver disease for centuries. Recently, substantial studies demonstrated that Semen hoveniae extract (SHE) not only suppressed the hepatic steatosis caused by chronic ethanol exposure, but also inhibited lipopolysaccharide-stimulated inflammatory responses. Nevertheless, the underlying molecular mechanisms largely remained elusive. AIM: To determine the hepatoprotective effects of SHE on ethanol-triggered liver damage and further elucidate its potential mecha
