Uptake and in-plant transport of formaldehyde by six plants with or without soil microorganisms were investigated. The capabilities of fresh and boiled leaf extracts to dissipate added formaldehyde were also measured to evaluate formaldehyde metabolism in plant tissues. Results show that when the initial formaldehyde level in air was 0.56 ± 0.04 mg·m-3, the removal rate in the plant-only systems varied from 1.91 to 31.8 μg·h-1·g-1 FW (fresh weight). The removal rate of plants in the plant-only systems were ordered as Helianthus annuus Linn > Lycopersicon esculentum Miller > Oryza sativa > Sans

Soil protists - a phylogenetically diverse group of unicellular eukaryotes, encompassing bacterivorous flagellates, predatory amoebae, fungivorous vampyrellids, and parasitic plasmodiophorids - exist at densities ranging from 10⁴ to 10⁸ cells per gram of soil, yet are systematically underrepresented in microbiome research compared to bacteria and fungi. This review presents soil protists as active regulators of microbial community structure, nutrient biogeochemistry, and functional ecosystem resilience, rather than just passive dwellers of the soil. Three interconnected mechanistic aspects are

Although the potential of microbial inoculants for sustainable agriculture and environmental restoration has been widely recognized, their field performance remains highly variable and often unpredictable. Current research and development frameworks for microbial inoculants primarily focus on their plant growth-promoting functions and metabolic traits, often overlooking the ecological processes that determine whether introduced strains can successfully disperse, access, and establish within the rhizosphere. Increasing evidence suggests that successful dispersal and establishment cannot be assu

Compositional variation in rhizosphere communities among plant species is ubiquitous and fundamental in maintaining both soil and plant biodiversity. However, the magnitude and direction of environmental effects on this variation remain unquantified in complex natural settings. Here, by integrating a large-scale field survey and a complementary glasshouse experiment with 54 plant species, we disentangled the effects of environmental variation from intrinsic plant effects on rhizosphere fungal composition. Field environments can either amplify or reduce compositional variation in rhizosphere fu

AIM: The bioinoculant properties of a newly identified ammonium-releasing novel strain of Actinomycetota-Microbacterium bengalense sp. nov. GB16_1_BI (Accession number: SRX9280401) on the microbiome structure of rice rhizosphere were assessed.
METHODS AND RESULT: GB16_1_BI may inhibit most bacteria present in the rice rhizosphere as well as encouraged the growth of rare bacteria specific to the waterlogged rice rhizosphere. The genome sequence as well as untargeted metabolome analyses of GB16_1_BI showed abundance of secondary metabolites with probable antimicrobial activity. Amplicon sequenc

Legume cover crops are increasingly incorporated into sustainable production systems, yet their influence on rhizosphere microbial communities remains poorly characterized, particularly for underutilized warm-season species. In this study, we investigated rhizosphere bacterial communities associated with cowpea (Vigna unguiculata), tepary bean (Phaseolus acutifolius), and sunn hemp (Crotalaria juncea) in an organic production system using 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing and compared them with fallow soils. All legume species were associated with shifts in bacterial community composition relative

Soil pollution from urbanization, agriculture, and industry, compounded by climate change, poses severe threats to soil health and food security. Traditional physical, chemical, and biological remediation approaches are often resource-intensive and risk secondary contamination. This narrative review critically synthesizes mechanistic insights into nanobubble (NB) technology, its interactions with soil microbial communities, and their applications in enhancing bioremediation of contaminated and saline soils. NBs (<1 µm improve the gas transfer, generate reactive oxygen species (ROS), and facili

INTRODUCTION: Safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.) is a prized medicinal species whose therapeutic value hinges on the abundance of bioactive metabolites. Accumulation of these metabolites are influenced by a range of environmental and edaphic factors, including soil physicochemical parameters, extracellular enzyme activities, composition and function of rhizosphere microbiome. However, how these factors individually and synergistically orchestrate the biosynthesis, transport, and ultimate storage of pharmaceutically active compounds within Safflower tissues remains unknown.

Microbial DNA fragments isolated from maize rhizosphere soil under different soil fertilization treatments were sequenced, and the analysed genes contained membrane transport genes for the uptake and utilization of various substrates, nutrients ranging from sugars, vitamins, amino acids, metals, non-metals (nitrogen, oxygen, phosphorus, selenium, sulphur etc.), peptides, and osmoprotectant to quorum sensing signalling molecules. Other genes identified were involved in the export of folded and unfolded proteins and lipopolysaccharide molecules. In total, 87 gene families belonging to 32 operon

The ecological characteristics of fungal generalists (FG) and specialists (FS) in rhizosphere, as well as their impact on soil micronutrient dynamics and plant metabolic adaptability are largely unknown. Through large-scale sampling of Panax notoginseng (with saponins as the primary specialized metabolite) and ecological analysis, we demonstrated that, compared to FS, the assembly of rhizosphere FG is more strongly governed by deterministic processes and that they play more crucial roles in maintaining network stability. Further, Mantel analysis and multiple machine learning models revealed th

Plants release a wealth of metabolites into the rhizosphere that can shape the composition and activity of microbial communities in response to environmental stress. The connection between rhizodeposition and rhizosphere microbiome succession has been suggested, particularly under environmental stress conditions, yet definitive evidence is scarce. In this study, we investigated the relationship between rhizosphere chemistry, microbiome dynamics, and abiotic stress in the bioenergy crop switchgrass grown in a marginal soil under nutrient-limited, moisture-limited, and nitrogen (N)-replete, phos

The prevalence of cadmium (Cd)-polluted agricultural soils is increasing globally, and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) can reduce the absorption of heavy metals by plants and improve mineral nutrition. However, the immobilization of the rhizosphere on cadmium is often overlooked. In this study, Glomus mosseae and Medicago sativa were established as symbiotes, and Cd migration and environmental properties in the rhizosphere were analyzed. AMF reduced Cd migration, and Cd2+ changed to an organic-bound state. AMF symbiosis treatment and Cd exposure resulted in microbial community variation, ex

Cadmium (Cd) contamination has led to various harmful impacts on soil microbial ecosystem, agricultural crops, and thus human health. Nanomaterials are promising candidates for reducing the accumulation of heavy metals in plants. In this study, graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4), a two-dimensional polymeric nanomaterial, was applied for ameliorating Cd phytotoxicity to soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.). Its impacts on rhizosphere variables, microorganisms, and metabolism were examined. It was found that g-C3N4 increased carbon/nitrogen/phosphorus (C/N/P) content, especially when N contents were

Disease-suppressive soils protect plants against soilborne fungal pathogens that would otherwise cause root infections. Soil suppressiveness is, in most cases, mediated by the antagonistic activity of the microbial community associated with the plant roots. Considering the enormous taxonomic and functional diversity of the root-associated microbiome, identification of the microbial genera and mechanisms underlying this phenotype is challenging. One approach to unravel the underlying mechanisms is to identify metabolic pathways enriched in the disease-suppressive microbial community, in particu

The effects of Pseudomonas putida ATH2-1RI/9 and Acidovorax delafieldii ATH2-2RS/1 on rhizosphere colonization, cyanide production, and growth of velvetleaf and corn was examined. When formulated in alginate beads and inoculated onto velvetleaf and corn plants (10(9) CFU/plant), only P. putida ATH2-1RI/9 consistently reduced velvetleaf growth. Neither isolate inhibited corn growth. Interestingly the levels of P. putida ATH2-1RI/9 in the velvetleaf rhizosphere were 1000-fold higher (7 x 10(7) CFU/g root) than the A. delafieldii ATH2-2RS/1 populations. Cyanide (53-68 mM/g root) was recovered fro

Microplastics (MPs), as emerging global pollutants, may disrupt agricultural ecosystems and affect crop growth and development. To clarify the impact of MPs on the soil-maize system, this study investigated the effects of traditional non-degradable MPs [polyethylene (PE) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC)] and biodegradable MPs [polylactic acid (PLA)] on rhizosphere soil nutrient content, organic acids, enzyme activity, as well as maize height and biomass. The results showed that the addition of conventional MPs reduced rhizosphere soil total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), dissolved organic c

Soil salinization has been considered as a global problem in agriculture, which decreases crop productivity and threatens food security. Salt stress causes complex physiological damages in plants such as ionic imbalance, osmotic stress, and oxidative damage. However, plants have developed several genomic mechanisms to reduce these negative influences that are further supported by dynamic interactions with rhizosphere microbial communities. This review integrates current advances in understanding the interplay between plant genomes and the rhizosphere microbiome under salt stress. It highlights

Sethoxydim, a cyclohexanedione herbicide inhibiting acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACCase), is widely used for post-emergence control of graminaceous weeds in foxtail millet (Setaria italica (L.) Beauv.) fields. This study investigated under field conditions the effects of sethoxydim on root morphology and rhizosphere microecology using two cultivars with contrasting tolerance: the relatively tolerant hybrid Zhangzagu 10 and the relatively sensitive conventional Zhonggu 19. Previous studies on sethoxydim in foxtail millet have focused primarily on shoot physiology, whereas integrated assessments of r
