A case of peritoneal dialysis-associated peritonitis caused by Rhodococcus pyridinivorans.

BACKGROUND: Rhodococcus infections are exceedingly rare and largely reported in immunocompromised hosts, with no consensus on optimal therapy due to limited evidence. CASE PRESENTATION: This article reports for the first time a case of peritoneal dialysis-associated peritonitis caused by Rhodococcus pyridinivorans in a patient with diabetic nephropathy. The dialysate leukocyte count declined substantially with combination antimicrobial therapy, but complete normalization occurred only after replacing icodextrin with a glucose-based dialysate. CONCLUSIONS: These findings support the use of co

Seroepidemiological survey of Rhodococcus equi infection in adult horses in Mongolia.

ELISA antibody titers against Rhodococcus equi strain ATCC 6939 were measured in serum samples collected from 644 horses aged 1-21 years at 13 provinces and the capital of Mongolia, of which 631 (98%) samples showed values of approximately zero. The mean antibody titers in the 14 areas ranged from -0.08 to -0.01. Nine samples (1.4%) exhibited titers of 0.1-0.2, and surprisingly, four horses (0.6%) each aged 2, 5, 8, and 9 years demonstrated positive values in the range of 0.3-0.8. Considering the age resistance characteristic of this disease, the positive horses were hypothesized to exhibit no

Rhodococcus equi Endocarditis in Prosthetic Valve of a Heart Transplant Recipient.

BACKGROUND: Rhodococcus equi are gram-positive bacteria found in the soil and in animal manure. R. equi infection causes pneumonia and bacteremia predominantly in immunocompromised hosts. CASE SUMMARY: A 57-year-old male heart transplant recipient with a bioprosthetic aortic valve presented with 6 weeks of cough, diarrhea, and weight loss. He was found to have cavitary pneumonia and persistent R. equi bacteremia. Transesophageal echocardiogram demonstrated thickening of the bioprosthetic valve with mild regurgitation, and mobile echodensity was later seen on transthoracic echocardiogram. Disc

Rare Bloodstream Infection of Rhodococcus rhodochrous as the Prodromal Signal for Malignancy.

Rhodococcus-associated infections are extremely rare, and previous publications have indicated that such infections are primarily observed among individuals with HIV. Limited information is available regarding therapy, and no clear consensus has been reached to guide treatment. Here, we report the first case of bloodstream infection with Rhodococcus rhodochrous in a non-HIV patient with a viral intracranial infection. During follow-up, lymph node biopsy and bone marrow aspiration were performed because superficial lymphadenectasis had failed to regress as expected within 3 months. The patient

A key O-demethylase in the degradation of guaiacol by Rhodococcus opacus PD630.

Rhodococcus opacus PD630 is a high oil-producing strain with the ability to convert lignin-derived aromatics to high values, but limited research has been done to elucidate its conversion pathway, especially the upper pathways. In this study, we focused on the upper pathways and demethylation mechanism of lignin-derived aromatics metabolism by R. opacus PD630. The results of the aromatic carbon resource utilization screening showed that R. opacus PD630 had a strong degradation capacity to the lignin-derived methoxy-containing aromatics, such as guaiacol, 3,4-veratric acid, anisic acid, isovani

Ulcerative, granulomatous glossitis and enteritis caused by Rhodococcus equi in a heifer.

Rhodococcus equi infection in horses is common and is characterized by pyogranulomatous pneumonia and ulcerative enterocolitis. R. equi clinical disease in cattle, however, is rare and typically manifests as granulomatous lymphadenitis discovered in the abattoir. A 19-mo-old female Santa Gertrudis had a history of intermittent inappetence and weight loss for a 3-mo period before euthanasia. Gross and histologic examination revealed severe, chronic, ulcerative, and granulomatous inflammation in the tongue, pharynx, and small intestine. Also, the heifer had severe, granulomatous pharyngeal and m

Tuberculosis-like pneumonias by the aerobic actinomycetes Rhodococcus, Tsukamurella and Gordonia.

The order Actinomycetales includes phylogenetically diverse but morphologically similar aerobic and anaerobic organisms, exhibiting filamentous branching structures which fragment into rods or coccoid forms. Lung pathogens of the order comprise Mycobacterium, Nocardia, Corynebacterium, Actinomyces, Kytococcus, Rothia, Williamsia, as well as Gordonia, Tsukamurella and Rhodococcus. Particularly, members of the last three genera are uncommon aerobic agents of lung cavitations and tuberculosis(TB)-like syndromes, that should be carefully considered in the aetiology of parenchymal lesions. Vertebral osteomyelitis due to Rhodococcus equi in a liver transplant recipient.

Rhodococcus equi is a rare but well-documented cause of cavitary pneumonia in immunocompromised patients. In this report the first case of R. equi infection manifesting as vertebral osteomyelitis is described. A 39-year-old liver transplant recipient presented with recurrent pneumonia and a pleura-based lung abscess and subsequently developed osteomyelitis of the lower thoracic spine. Surgical debridement and prolonged treatment with rifabutin and clarithromycin resulted in clinical cure. In the literature, 12 other cases of R. equi infection in solid-organ transplant recipients have been repo

Eco-efficient Pseudomonas-Rhodococcus combination technique to boost the BTEX degradation.

This study investigated the aerobic biodegradation potential of two novel indigenous bacterial strains, Pseudomonas aeruginosa DUT-Pa and Rhodococcus erythropolis DUT-Re, utilizing benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and o-xylene (BTEX) as the sole carbon source. The optimal metabolic activity for both strains was identified at neutral pH (7.0) and mesophilic conditions (30 °C), establishing a critical baseline for enhancing bioremediation protocols. Biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) analysis revealed a direct correlation between the substrate concentration (up to 400 mg/L) and microbial respiratory

Serum Electrolyte Changes in Foals Receiving Rhodococcus equi-Specific Hyperimmune Plasma.

BACKGROUND: Rhodococcus equi-specific hyperimmune plasma (Re-HIP) is routinely administered to neonatal foals to help prevent rhodococcal pneumonia. In addition to pathogen-specific immunoglobulins, frozen plasma products (FPPs) contain electrolytes that may exceed concentrations found in neonatal foal plasma. Because FPPs are also used to treat failure of passive transfer and sepsis, understanding their effects on neonate homeostasis is crucial. This study evaluated the effects of administration of Re-HIP on the serum concentrations of Na+, Cl-, K+, albumin, and globulin of healthy neonatal f

Protective immune response against Rhodococcus equi: An innate immunity-focused review.

Rhodococcus equi causes pyogranulomatous pneumonia in foals and immunocompromised people. Despite decades of research efforts, no vaccine is available against this common cause of disease and death in foals. The purpose of this narrative review is to summarise the current understanding of interactions between R. equi and the host innate immune system, to describe features of the immune response that are associated with resistance or susceptibility to R. equi infection, and help guide strategies for developing novel approaches for preventing R. equi infections. Virulence of R. equi in foals has

Plasma metabolome of healthy and Rhodococcus equi-infected foals over time.

BACKGROUND: Foals that develop pulmonary ultrasonographic lesions on Rhodococcus equi (R. equi) endemic farms are treated with antibiotics because those at risk of developing clinical pneumonia (~20%) cannot be recognised early. Candidate biomarkers identified using metabolomics may aid targeted treatment strategies against R. equi. OBJECTIVES: (1) To describe how foal ageing affects their plasma metabolome (birth to 8 weeks) and (2) to establish the effects that experimental infection with Rhodococcus equi (R. equi) has on foal metabolome. STUDY DESIGN: Experimental study. METHODS: Nine he

Ethidium bromide exposure unmasks an antibiotic efflux system in Rhodococcus equi.

BACKGROUND: This study introduces a newly created strain (Rhodococcus equiEtBr25) by exposing R. equi ATCC 33701 to ethidium bromide (EtBr), a substrate for MDR transporters. Such an approach allowed us to investigate the resulting phenotype and genetic mechanisms underlying the efflux-mediated resistance in R. equi. METHODS: R. equi ATCC 33701 was stimulated with increasing concentrations of EtBr. The antimicrobial susceptibility of the parental strain and R. equiEtBr25 was investigated in the presence/absence of efflux pump inhibitors (EPIs). EtBr efflux was evaluated by EtBr-agar method an

Antimicrobial susceptibility patterns of Rhodococcus equi from necropsied foals with rhodococcosis.

Mainstay therapy for rhodococcosis in foals is the combination of rifampicin and a macrolide. While emergence of resistance to rifampicin and macrolides has been reported, studies demonstrating the development of resistance to such drugs is limited in necropsied foals with rhodococcosis. In this study, the foal necropsy records between 01/01/2011 and 08/30/2019 were reviewed for culture-positive R. equi with MICs and, whether or not the affected foals received any mainstay dual therapy before their deaths. Resistance to antimicrobials in the R. equi isolates from necropsied foals were then com

Antitumor activity of a Rhodococcus sp. Lut0910 isolated from polluted soil.

The actinomycetes strain, lut0910, was isolated from polluted soil and identified as the Rhodococcus species with 99% similarity based on the sequence analysis of 16S recombinant DNA. The extract of this strain demonstrated in vivo and in vitro antitumor activity. The treatment of two human cancer cell lines, hepatocellular carcinoma HepG2 and cervical carcinoma Hela cells, with the lut0910 extract caused the delay in cell propagation in a dose-dependent manner with an IC50 of 73.39 and 33.09 µg/mL, respectively. Also, the oral administration of lut0910 extract to the mice with a solid tumor r

Enhanced cyanide biodegradation by immobilized crude extract of Rhodococcus UKMP-5M.

The capability of the crude extract of Rhodococcus UKMP-5M was enhanced by adopting the technology of immobilization. Among the matrices screened to encapsulate the crude extract, gellan gum emerged as the most suitable immobilization material, exceeding the activity of cyanide-degrading enzyme by 61% and 361% in comparison to alginate carrier and non-immobilized crude extract, respectively. Improved bead mechanical strength which supported higher biocatalyst activity by 63% was observed when concentration of gellan gum, concentration of calcium chloride, number of beads and bead size were opt

Structure-activity relationship of mycoloyl glycolipids derived from Rhodococcus sp. 4306.

Novel mycoloyl glycolipids with short carbon chains were isolated and purified from Rhodococcus sp. 4306, a soil origin of Actinomycetales. Their chemical structures were identified as trehalose 6,6'-dimycolate (TDM), trehalose 6-monomycolate, glucose 6-monomycolate, mannose 6-monomycolate and fructose 6-monomycolate. The length of carbon chains and number of double bonds of mycolic acids were C(34), C(36)and C(38)saturated, monoenoic and dienoic molecular species, which were much shorter than those of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (C(78-88)monoenoic and dienoic). Among them, only TDM could induc
