BACKGROUND: Plant pests such as Acyrthosiphon pisum and Bursaphelenchus xylophilus pose destructive threats to crops and pine forests globally. Widespread application of synthetic pesticides has caused pest resistance and ecological risks, creating an urgent demand for eco-friendly, pesticidal natural products. Endophytic fungi of medicinal plants serve as an untapped reservoir of bioactive natural metabolites, which are a promising resource for excavating novel natural insecticides.
RESULTS: Twenty-three natural derivatives, including 12 tremulane sesquiterpenoids (1-12), were isolated from

OBJECTIVES: Consumption of fish/seafood is clearly linked to higher mercury levels in human tissue samples. However, correlations between methylmercury (MeHg) intakes calculated from dietary surveys and mercury body burdens are usually weak and can vary across populations. Different factors may affect MeHg absorption, distribution, metabolism and excretion, including co-exposures to phytochemicals and antibiotics, which were shown to affect mercury body burdens in rodents. Based on the observation that rat pups developmentally exposed to MeHg and a Rhododendron tomentosum extract (Labrador Tea

Rhododendron species, a globally recognized group of medicinal and edible plants, are known to produce a wide array of meroterpenoid natural products. Among these, daurichromenic acid (7) and its derivatives are widely distributed and exhibit diverse biological activities. However, their low natural abundance in plants and the incomplete elucidation of their biosynthetic pathways have hindered further development and application. Capitachromenic acid D (6), a representative chromene compound formed via successive oxidative transformations of 7, was initially isolated from R. capitatum Maxim. a

Rhododendron dauricum L. flowers are highly valued as ornamental plants in northern Chinese horticulture, yet while its leaves are well-known for their antitussive and anti-asthmatic effects, the flowers themselves remain an underutilized resource. Oxidative stress and chronic inflammation are intimately intertwined pathological processes that mutually reinforce each other in a self-perpetuating cycle, and current clinical treatments for diseases related to oxidative stress and inflammation have become a significant focus of research. This study investigated the chemical composition and bioact

The composition of low-polarity extracts obtained by sequential extraction of the aerial parts of Rhododendron adamsii Rehd. with hexane and methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) was investigated using GC-MS. The hexane extract was dominated by non-polar components: squalene, n-alkanes (nonacosane, hentriacontane), sesquiterpenes (trans-nerolidol, spathulenol, β-farnesene), and β-sitosterol. The subsequent MTBE extract was enriched in more polar lipids, primarily free triterpenic acids (ursolic and oleanolic acids). A critical finding was the complete absence of diterpene grayanotoxins in all tested

Sarcopenia, an age-related muscle atrophy disease, is a major health concern in aging societies and is closely associated with severe chronic diseases. Its primary pathogenesis involves oxidative stress-induced apoptosis in muscle cells and an imbalance in protein metabolism. This study evaluated the potential of Rhododendron mucronulatum branch extract (RMB) and its major flavonoids, taxifolin-3-O-arabinopyranoside (Tax-G) and taxifolin (Tax-A), as natural therapeutic agents for sarcopenia. Phytochemical analyses were performed using TLC, HPLC, LC-MS/MS, and NMR, and Tax-G and Tax-A were isol

In this study, N-doped carbon dots (CDs) functionalized with L-carnitine-loaded β-cyclodextrin were synthesized with a hydrothermal method using two different Rhododendron spp. (R. luteum and R. ponticum) as carbon sources. The synthesized carbon dots (LC/β-CD@Rh.l/N-CD (CD1) and LC/β-CD@Rh.p/N-CD (CD2)) showed monodisperse distributions, with a size of 3-5 nm and a spherical structure. The stability of these biogenic CDs in water and their effects on marine ecosystems were investigated using A. salina larvae (nauplii). Biogenic CDs were exposed to varying concentrations of 5-100 μL for 24, 48

The azalea lace bug (ALB), Stephanitis pyrioides (Scott) (Hemiptera: Tingidae), is a pest of azaleas and rhododendrons. The application of silicon (Si) to plants has been shown to accumulate in other plants and enhance defense to other plant pests. We evaluated whether Si applications decreased ALB infestation on rhododendron leaves and increased Si accumulation in leaves. Potted plants were treated with 4 or 8 weekly applications of calcium silicate and calcium carbonate (calcium control, Ca) via foliar or soil application. In 3 out of 4 choice studies, plants treated with calcium silicate or

Wild honey from the Himalayan cliff bee Apis laboriosa, commonly known as mad honey, has been consumed across Nepal's mid-Himalayan belt for centuries for its perceived medicinal and psychoactive properties, yet its capacity to cause grayanotoxin poisoning has never been systematically documented. The bee forages on Rhododendron species whose nectar contains grayanotoxins, which become concentrated in the honey it produces. We reviewed 27 publications describing approximately 68 cases of grayanotoxin poisoning spanning five decades, situating the clinical epidemiology within the ecological fra

Mad honey, primarily derived from the nectar of Rhododendron species, has been used for centuries in traditional medicine due to benefits in managing hypertension, diabetes, and gastrointestinal disorders. However, its consumption carries health risks, including dizziness, hypotension, bradycardia, and, in severe cases, life-threatening cardiac complications. This review synthesizes research on the chemical composition and toxicological effects of mad honey, with a focus on grayanotoxins (GRAYs), key bioactive compounds responsible for its dual therapeutic and toxic effects. It examines region

Grayanotoxins are known to occur in honey produced from the nectar of Rhododendrons of the family Ericaceae. Grayanotoxins extracted from honey sample obtained from a patient who experienced severe bradycardia and hypotension after ingesting two tablespoonfuls corresponded to Rhododendron ponticum tetrades. Anaesthetized albino rats were injected with honey extract intracerebroventricularly or intraperitoneally. The intracerebroventricular dose was equivalent to 50 mg honey and i.p. doses were equivalent to 50 mg, 1 mg kg-1 and 5 g kg-1 honey. Marked bradycardia and respiratory rate depression
