Black currant juices from five different cultivars were analyzed for composition, content, and mean degree of polymerization (mDP) of proanthocyanidins (PA) by UPLC-MS/MS. Juices contained both procyanidins (PC) and prodelphinidins (PD), but the PC-% varied significantly, from 28 to 82% of the total PA. In addition, high PD-% was related to high mDP and total PA content. Enzyme-assisted processing increased significantly total PA (5-14-fold), PD-% (12-65%), and mDP (1.8-6.2-fold) in the juices of all cultivars. The effects of embelin (50 mg/kg/day), a benzoquinone derivative of Embelia ribes, and the effects of curcumin (100 mg/kg/day), the active principle of Curcuma longa, against N-nitrosodiethylamine (DENA)-initiated and phenobarbital (PB)-promoted hepatocarcinogenesis were studied in Wistar rats. They were able to prevent the induction of hepatic hyper plastic nodules, body weight loss, increase in the levels of hepatic diagnostic markers, and hypoproteinemia induced by DENA/PB treatment. Popliteal cysts or Baker's cysts in childhood is a rare disease usually found by the parents. The purpose of this study is to study the recurrence rate after primary surgical resection and conservative treatment of the cysts. We retrospectively found 20 children with Baker's cysts treated at Ribe Amts Hospitals during the period 1992-1998. PURPOSE: Radiation-induced bystander effect (RIBE) frequently is seen as DNA damage in unirradiated bystander cells, but the repair processes initiated in response to that DNA damage are not well understood. RIBE-mediated formation of micronuclei (MN), a biomarker of persistent DNA damage, was previously observed in bystander normal fibroblast (AG01522) cells, but not in bystander human chondrosarcoma (HTB94) cells.
