The rickettsioses continue to constitute major health problems in many areas of the world. Unlike those diseases that are transmissible directly from man to man, the rickettsioses are closely associated with man's environment and are therefore difficult to recognize and require complex strategies for their control. This article is concerned mainly with means for recognition and surveillance of these diseases, since only with reliable background information can a reasonable strategy for prevention and control be developed. Clinical information, while helpful, is insufficient for the identificat

Scrub typhus, also called tsutsugamushi disease, is classified as a Group 3 disease in Korea according to the National Notifiable Diseases Surveillance Systems. It is an infectious disease transmitted to humans through the bite of mites that are infected with an intracellular parasite called Orientia tsutsugamushi (Family: Rickettsiaceae). This study aims to identify the demographic characteristics of the infected cases according to profession, region, gender, and onset period and provide a basic data for prevention and control of the disease in the infected patients. Between 2001 and 2010, 16

BACKGROUND: Hunting constitutes an important industry in Europe. However, data on the prevalence of vector-borne bacteria in large game animal species are lacking from several countries. Blood or spleen samples (239 and 270, respectively) were taken from red, fallow and roe deer, as well as from water buffaloes, mouflons and wild boars in Hungary, followed by DNA extraction and molecular analyses for Anaplasma phagocytophilum, haemoplasmas and rickettsiae.
RESULTS: Based on blood samples, the prevalence rate of A. phagocytophilum infection was significantly higher in red deer (97.9%) than in

Infection of the central nervous system (CNS) is a severe and frequently fatal event during the course of many diseases caused by microbes with predominantly intracellular life cycles. Examples of these include the facultative intracellular bacteria Listeria monocytogenes, Mycobacterium tuberculosis, and Brucella and Salmonella spp. and obligate intracellular microbes of the Rickettsiaceae family and Tropheryma whipplei. Unfortunately, the mechanisms used by intracellular bacterial pathogens to enter the CNS are less well known than those used by bacterial pathogens with an extracellular life

The vole agent described by Baker in 1946 was studied as an example of a bacterium that has been mistakenly regarded a rickettsia. Unlike rickettsiae, the vole agent killed chicken embryos with great irregularity, multipled primarily at the surface of avian or mammalian cells and not intracellularly, produced colonies rather than plaques on chicken embryo monolayers under agar, and developed small colonies after 4 to 7 days of cultivation on blood plates. It was most conveniently cultivated on monolayers of irradiated L cells and was purified by minor modifications of the Renografin gradient p

Microbe of taxonomical families Rickettsiaceae aceal and Bartonellaceae of Rickettsiales order have caused not less than 14 nosological forms of disease among people in different parts of the world. About 8 of them--in Russia and in the former Soviet Republics. These diseases are not unequivocal from epidemiological point of view. Trench, Marseilles and other forms of fever, murine typhus, vesicules rickettsia, etc. have been liquidated and never recurred for 30-40 years. Prowazek's [correction of Provachek's] rickettsia in its two forms has lost its epidemiological meaning in Russia and is ne

Rickettsioses have been reported all over Africa. Serologic investigations have been driven using non specific methods as Giroud microagglutination and Weil-Felix test which led to numerous false positive. This explains the difficulties encountered in the evaluation of the prevalence of such diseases in Africa. However, three recent studies made in Tunisia, Central Africa and Zimbabwe show that seroprevalence of spotted fever group rickettsiae infections is close to 45% using MIF as reference method. New technics as Western and Line immunoblotting and RFLP PCR should allowed to new studies and

Ehrlichia Canis, a canine rickettsia, produces an acute infection in humans characterized by thrombocytopenia, leukopenia, and anemia. Patients should be closely questioned and examined for tick bites. Rash is not prominent, leading to the interesting if somewhat inaccurate label of "spotless spotted fever." The diagnosis is made by clinical presentation, absence of positive Lyme disease or Rocky Mounted Spotted Fever (RMSF) serology, and positive E. canis titers. Tetracyclines are preferred treatment. Ehrlichiosis should be considered in the differential diagnosis of fevers of unknown origin,
