Heteromyoxyuris otomii n. sp., which inhabits the intestinal caecum of Perognathus flavus (Heteromyidae), in Zaragoza, Hidalgo, Mexico, is described. This new species differs from the 2 other congeneric species in the morphology and length of lateral alae in males. Heteromyoxyuris deserti has simple lateral alae located at both sides of the body, whereas in the new species, these structures are double at both sides; in contrast, lateral alae of Heteromyoxyuris longejector begin at the posterior half of the body, whereas they arise in the first third in the new species. Heteromyoxyuris longejec

The potential of the RH strain of Toxoplasma gondii to invade trophoblast cells of the cricetid rodent Calomys callosus in a congenital infection in the initial third of pregnancy was investigated in this study using morphological and immunocytochemical approaches. The animals were intraperitoneally inoculated on the 1st day of pregnancy and the infection was observed on day 7. Various numbers of parasites could be observed inside the parasitophorous vacuoles in trophoblastic cells under light and electron microscopy. The trophoblast cells showed characteristics of healthy cells, and no altera

AIM: Assess possible adverse effects of the chronic use of indinavir during pregnancy in a rat model.
METHODS: 40 pregnant EOM-1 albino rats were randomly allocated into four groups of 10 animals each: a control (Ctr) group (without any handling) and three experimental groups (Exp 1, Exp 2 e Exp 3) which received indinavir 9, 27 e 81 mg/kg, respectively). Rats were treated by gavage once daily. The treatment period extended from day 0 until the 20th day of pregnancy. Body weights were recorded on days 0, 7, 14 and 20. At term, the rats were sacrificed, and the implantation sites, number of li

The North American Deermouse, Peromyscus maniculatus, is one of the most widespread and abundant mammals on the continent. It is of public health interest as a known host of several viruses that are transmissible to humans and can cause illness, including the acute respiratory disease Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS). However, recent taxonomic studies indicate that P. maniculatus is a complex of multiple species, raising questions about how to identify and interpret three decades of hantavirus monitoring data. We conducted a systematic review investigating the prevalence and spatial distrib

BACKGROUND: The genus Stilestrongylus (Freitas, Lent, and Almeida, 1937) is defined by having 24 or more subequal cuticular ridges, an asymmetrical caudal bursa, and a hypertrophied genital cone. It comprises 25 recognized species, mainly parasitizing cricetids, and shows significant diversification linked to the evolution of its hosts. Stilestrongylus magnumspiculum n. sp. is a newly described nematode species identified in the small intestine of the rodent Euryoryzomys russatus (Cricetidae, Sigmodontinae) from the Atlantic Forest of Northeast Brazil. This study aims to characterize the new s

Cutaneous leishmaniasis caused by different species of Leishmania is transmitted by Phlebotominae sandflies. This disease remains a public health concern in Iran. Therefore, the present study aimed to examine Leishmania infection in sandflies and reservoir rodents in six rural regions of Nahavand, located in western Iran. From May to October 2022, sandflies and rodents were collected and identified at the species level. Additionally, rodents' skin lesions and earlobe specimens were collected separately for microscopic and molecular examination. All specimens were tested for Leishmania DNA by P

Abstract : Specimens originally identified as Arostrilepis horrida from the Nearctic are revised, contributing to the recognition of a complex of cryptic species distributed across the Holarctic region. Previously unrecognized species are described based on specimens in cricetid (Neotominae) and geomyid rodents. Arostrilepis mariettavogeae n. sp. in Peromyscus californicus from Monterey County, California and Arostrilepis schilleri n. sp. in Thomomys bulbivorus from Corvallis, Oregon are characterized. Consistent with recent studies defining diversity in the genus, form, size, and spination (p

Trichuris thrichomysi n. sp., recovered from the cecum of the wild rodent Thrichomys apereoides from a transition zone between the Atlantic Forest and Cerrado morfoclimatic domains, and its life cycle observed under experimental conditions are described. This new species is closely related to Trichuris travassosi, Trichuris chiliensis and Trichuris fulvi, but can be distinguished from them mainly by differences in the posterior end of males. Details of the surface such as the bacillary gland, cuticular inflations and several morphological details obtained by scanning electron microscopy and fi

Two diploid numbers and five karyomorphs were found in ten specimens of Rhipidomys (Sigmodontinae, Rodentia) from three states in Brazil: 2n = 50 from Amazonas, and 2n = 44 from Mato Grosso and Bahia. CBG, GTG, and RBG-banding and Ag-NOR analyses were performed, as well as fluorescence in situ: hybridization with (T2AG3)7 probes. The new diploid number of 2n = 50 was associated with two different fundamental numbers (FN = 71 and 72) as a result of pericentric inversions and addition/deletion of constitutive heterochromatin. The samples from two localities (Aripuanã and Vila Rica) in the state

This study aimed to identify Leishmania species in small non-flying mammals captured in semi-deciduous forest fragments of the Atlantic Forest and pastures in the Southwest region of Bahia state, Northeast Brazil. A total of 445 animals belonging to 11 different species were captured, the majority being rodents (75.7%; 337), followed by marsupials (24.2%; 108), and the most prevalent species were Cerradomys vivoi, Calomys expulsus, Necromys Lasiurus, and Marmosops incanus. Liver, spleen, kidney, heart, and lung fragments were collected for subsequent molecular diagnosis. Leishmania spp. kDNA a

Parasites are integral members of the global biodiversity. They are useful indicators of environmental stress, food web structure and diversity. Ectoparasites have the potential to transmit vector-borne diseases of public health and veterinary importance and to play an important role in the regulation and evolution of host populations. The interlinkages between hosts, parasites and the environment are complex and challenging to study, leading to controversial results. Most previous studies have been focused on one or two parasite groups, while hosts are often co-infected by different taxa. The

Species of South American subterranean rodents belonging to the genus Ctenomys (commonly called tuco-tucos) are widely distributed across the southern Neotropical region. Despite their relatively well-studied biology and reproductive physiology, current knowledge of their ectoparasite fauna is limited to a few ambiguous studies, based on scattered samples from a small number of host individuals. Ctenomys talarum is the most widely distributed species in the genus. Lice (Phthiraptera) were collected from these tuco-tucos throughout their entire coastal range. Two species, one chewing louse (Gyr

Syphacia (Syphacia) rifaii sp. n. (Nematoda: Oxyuridae) is described from endemic Bunomys chrysocomus and Bunomys prolatus (Rodentia: Muridae) on Sulawesi Island, Indonesia. The new species is closest morphologically to Syphacia (Syphacia) sulawesiensis , parasitic in Rattus xanthurus from Sulawesi Island, by having large vesicular lateral alae in males, but is readily distinguished by having a smaller body, a round cephalic plate in both sexes, the absence of lateral alae in females, a longer relative distance between excretory pore and vulva, and smaller eggs. Syphacia (S.) rifaii is surmise

A new African species of hystricognathous rodent, Gaudeamus lavocati sp. nov., is described herein from the early Oligocene deposits of Zallah locality (Sirt basin, Central Libya). The dental morphology of this species is very close to that of some earliest South American caviomorphs. It allows a reinterpretation of molar crest homologies among earliest caviomorphs, pentalophodonty being confirmed as the plesiomorphic molar condition in Caviomorpha. This morphological resemblance argues for close affinities between Gaudeamus and earliest South American hystricognaths. Cladistic analysis suppor

Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is an increasing public-health problem in the countries of the Mediterranean region. In southern Iran, for example, the incidence of CL has more than doubled over the last decade. As part of an investigation of this worrying trend, the leishmanial infections of the wild rodents that may act as reservoir hosts were investigated in the Iranian province of Fars. Overall, 82 rodents, 56 of them Libyan jirds (Meriones libycus), were collected, in live traps, from a new, hypo-endemic focus of zoonotic CL. When Giemsa-stained smears of ear tissue or any lesions on the rod

The M'sila region has been recently the theatre of an important outbreak of cutaneous leishmaniasis. The search for the animal reservoir resulted in the discovery of 3 rodents, Psammomys obesus, naturally infected with Leishmania. This is of importance as far as prophylactic measures are concerned.

Environmental temperature is a key determinant of animal welfare, and rising global temperatures increase the risk of heat stress. While thermal tolerance is critical for predicting wildlife vulnerability to climate change, physiological responses in South American wild rodents remain understudied. Here, we assessed heat stress responses in the plains vizcacha (Lagostomus maximus), a semi-fossorial rodent with key ecological functions, to establish upper critical Temperature-Humidity Index (THI) thresholds. Within an observed THI range of 18.5 to 30.7, non-invasive longitudinal monitoring and
