Diagnosing and recording root caries: A survey among Swiss dentists.

OBJECTIVES: Despite the increase in the root caries prevalence, little is still known about how dentists manage this condition. The present study aimed to evaluate the knowledge of dentists on diagnosing and recording root caries lesions (RCL). METHODS: The survey consisted of three domains: (1) dentists' knowledge on diagnosing, recording and managing RCL; (2) information about their current general clinical routines; and (3) their demographics. The four Swiss Universities distributed the survey via e-mail lists for alumni or professionals participating in continuing education. The data was

National Study of Adult Oral Health 2017-18: root caries.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of root caries in Australia is expected to increase due to an ageing population and increase in tooth retention. This report presents findings from the Australian National Study of Adult Oral Health 2017-18. METHODS: A stratified random sample of 15 731 Australians aged ≥15 years participated in a telephone or online survey. Of those, 5022 dentate people underwent an oral assessment. Carious root surfaces were defined as ≥1 mm of affected dentine/cementum. Prevalence was defined as the percentage with ≥one natural tooth with untreated caries on root surfaces. Severi

Automatic pH-cycling caries model applied on root hard tissue.

The development of a caries lesion is a dynamic process that includes frequently alternating periods of de- and remineralization, a process for which no in vitro models currently exists. The aim of this study was to develop a model which could repeatedly generate identical pH versus time curves over extended periods of time. To test the model demineralization studies on cementum/dentin were performed. Cementum/dentin blocks were repeatedly subjected to de- and remineralizing solutions delivered by a computerized pump system connected to a pH-meter and a recorder. pH versus time curves similar

Root caries on a Paranthropus robustus third molar from Drimolen.

OBJECTIVES: Dental caries is often perceived as a modern human disease. However, their presence is documented in many early human groups, various nonhuman primates and, increasingly, our hominin ancestors and relatives. In this study, we describe an antemortem lesion on the root of a Paranthropus robustus third molar from Drimolen, South Africa, which likely represents another example of caries in fossil hominins. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The molar, DNH 40, is dated to 2.0-1.5 Ma and displays a lesion on the mesial root surface, extending from the cementoenamel junction 3 mm down toward the ape

Root-surface caries formation: effect of in vitro APF treatment.

To determine the effect of one and four-minute acidulated phosphate fluoride, or APF (Oral-B Minute Gel, Oral-B Laboratories) treatments on artificial caries development in root surfaces, an in vitro study was conducted. The authors created a window of exposed root surface on extracted teeth by applying acid-resistant varnish to the remaining surface. APF treatment was administered and followed by a 24-hour deionized-distilled water rinse. A window of sound root surface that had been protected from the APF treatment was exposed and served as a control. Acidified gel was then applied to the exp

The prevalence and severity of root surface caries across Australian generations.

BACKGROUND: The "failure of success" theory predicts that as subsequent generations of older adults retain more teeth, those additional teeth will experience more oral disease like root surface caries. The theory in relation to root surface caries has never been tested in a cross-generational study. This study aims to compare root surface caries across generations of South Australian older adults to test the theory and explore risk indicators for root surface caries. METHODS: Data were from the baseline of two South Australian studies separated by 22 years. In both studies, stratified random

Prevalence and distribution of root caries in Pomerania, North-East Germany.

While biological and lifestyle determinants of reproductive health are well documented globally, comprehensive data integrating socio-demographic, lifestyle, and health correlates within a contemporary Polish context remain limited. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence and identify correlates of self-reported fertility problems among adults completing a 2024 online survey in Poland (the National Fertility Test). Of the 8,000 respondents surveyed, the analytical sample comprised 5,532 (3,316 women, 2,216 men) who had attempted to conceive. Sex-specific, age-adjusted, Holm-Bonferroni-corr

The distribution of root caries in community-dwelling elders in New England.

An in-home examination of a probability sample of elders aged 70 and older living in the six New England states was conducted to estimate the prevalence and extent of root caries. Oral examinations were conducted by the visual-tactile method using a portable lamp, explorer, and a mouth mirror. Fifty-two percent of the study participants showed root caries experience and 22 percent had untreated root caries. In contrast to previous studies, this analysis showed that buccal root surfaces were no more likely than proximal surfaces to be affected by root caries. Logistic regression analysis showed

The prevalence and pattern of distribution of root caries in a Scottish medieval population.

The prevalence and pattern of distribution of root caries were determined in a Scottish Medieval population. The principal finding was a lower root caries prevalence, compared with that of modern times, with respect to surfaces at risk; this was particularly marked with respect to buccal root caries. A lower intake of refined sugars and the presence of heavy deposits of supragingival calculus are suggested as factors that may be responsible for the observed differences. The common site for the early root caries lesion was just apical to the enamel-cementum junction. Initially, it extended late

Amelogenin-Derived Peptide-Modified Poly(amidoamine) Dendrimers for Root Caries Prevention.

Root caries present a significant challenge in dentistry. The unsatisfactory prognosis of restorative treatments requires novel, noninvasive preventive strategies. Here, we developed an amelogenin-derived peptide-modified poly(amidoamine), PAMAM-C11, to prevent demineralization in caries lesions and control periodontal destruction. PAMAM can induce dentin remineralization, whereas the C11 peptide strongly binds hydroxyapatite. When C11 is modified on the surface groups of PAMAM, it anchors the entire molecule on demineralized dentin surfaces, thereby resisting washout and enhancing the mineral

Dynamics of root caries in older adults using high-fluoride toothpaste.

OBJECTIVE: To assess changes in the activity pattern of root caries lesions (RCLs) treated with fluoridated dentifrices (1450 vs 5000 ppm F) in community-dwelling older adults. METHODS: We used data from a previous randomized controlled clinical trial that evaluated the effectiveness of high-fluoride dentifrices for treating RCLs. A total of 2071 active and inactive RCLs initially detected were followed-up for 2 years. Modified Nyvad's criteria were used to determine activity status and each lesion was categorized into one of eight possible patterns of activity or inactivity at baseline, one

AI-based prediction and classification of root caries using radiographic images.

BACKGROUND: Root surface caries, commonly known as root decay, is a common dental disorder that affects tooth roots. Like enamel-based tooth decay, root caries attack exposed root surfaces caused by gum recession or periodontal disease. Older persons with gum recession, tooth loss, or poor oral hygiene may be more likely to develop this disorder. Dental root caries must be diagnosed early to improve treatment and prevention. This research will examine radiographic image-based AI-based root caries prediction algorithms. METHODS: Saveetha Dental College supplied 200 root surface radiographs. An

Long-term evaluation of root surface caries in periodontally treated patients.

Caries development on exposed root surfaces was evaluated in 31 patients who had been subjected to surgical and/or nonsurgical periodontal treatment 8 years earlier due to advanced chronic periodontitis. Besides assessments for evaluation of the periodontal treatment, a number of examinations and tests were carried out in order to assess variables presumed to influence the root surface caries development. Both statistical and graphical analyses were carried out to test differences between groups of subjects and to evaluate the variables studied as possible risk factors for root surface caries.

The burden of root caries: Updated perspectives and advances on management strategies.

BACKGROUND: Root caries has gained much attention in the last few years. As the world's population is ageing and people currently tend to retain more teeth compared with older generations, there is an increased prevalence of periodontal disease and gingival recession, which may accelerate the onset of root caries. OBJECTIVE: This review aims to summarise recent findings related to the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of root caries. MATERIALS AND METHODS: MEDLINE (OVID) and Scopus (Elsevier) searches were performed to identify and discuss articles that address the pathogenicity and clinic
