Efficacy of subgingivally delivered atorvastatin and simvastatin as an adjunct to scaling and root planing.

BACKGROUND: The current understanding of the pathogenesis of periodontal disease has resulted in adjunctive use of various pharmacologic agents in periodontal therapy. The objective of this investigation was to assess the efficacy of atorvastatin and simvastatin (because of their pleiotropic properties) as an adjunct to dental scaling and root planing (SRP) by local delivery, i.e. placing them subgingivally, in the treatment of chronic periodontitis. METHODS: Local delivery systems for atorvastatin and simvastatin were prepared in sodium alginate suspension to be administered with calcium chl

Full-mouth scaling and root planing in type 2 diabetic subjects: one-year microbiological outcomes.

BACKGROUND: This study evaluated the microbiological effects of full-mouth (FM) and partial-mouth (PM) scaling and root planing (SRP) in type 2 diabetic subjects with chronic periodontitis (ChP), up to 12 months. METHODS: Thirty-four type 2 diabetic subjects with ChP received either FMSRP (n = 17), in two sessions within two consecutive days, or PMSRP (n = 17) in four sessions within 21 days. Six subgingival biofilm samples per subject were analysed by checkerboard DNA-DNA hybridization for 40 bacterial species at baseline, 3 and 12 months. RESULTS: Both therapies significantly reduced the l

Effectiveness of oral hygiene with and without root planing in treating subjects with chronic periodontitis.

The extent to which patients with chronic periodontitis could improve their condition by oral hygiene without instrumentation was investigated. Ten subjects were assessed, instructed in a subgingivally-directed oral hygiene technique (OH) twice a week until plaque was present at less than 20% of sites on two occasions and reassessed after 6 weeks when half the mouth was root planed. A final assessment took place after a further 6 weeks. At six weeks the mean number of sites with bleeding on probing (BOP) was significantly reduced (P < 0.001), the percentage of sites with BOP falling from 59% t

An imaging routine for assessing the efficacy of instruments used for scaling and root planing.

Deposits of dental plaque or calculus are typically quantified using planimetric techniques. However, error is introduced into a quantitative analysis of plaque deposits using these methods, since they require a significant amount of human intervention. The purpose of this study is to describe and validate a computerized imaging routine which has the potential to objectively identify material on dental roots and measure the area covered by these deposits. Dentiform teeth with simulated plaque were videorecorded. A computer routine was developed based on a flood-fill algorithm which analyzed im

Comparative Evaluation of Effectiveness of Oxygen-Releasing Gel With Scaling and Root Planing (SRP) With That of Scaling and Root Planing Alone in the Management of Chronic Periodontitis Patients: Study Protocol for Cross-Sectional Survey.

BACKGROUND: Gingival recession and periodontal pockets are the results of the gradual deterioration of the alveolar bone and periodontal ligament caused by periodontitis, which is caused by inflammation of the tissues supporting the tooth. The primary goal of periodontal therapy is to eradicate these aberrant traits. Despite being a popular treatment, scaling and root planing (SRP) has limitations, such as difficulty accessing deeper pockets and root concavities. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to assess the effectiveness of oxygen-releasing gel as a supplement to nonsurgical treatment fo

Efficacy of Adjunctive Er, Cr:YSGG Laser Application Following Scaling and Root Planing in Periodontally Diseased Patients.

The application of laser as a monotherapy has been shown to reduce probing pocket depths and increase clinical attachment levels after treatment of patients suffering from chronic periodontitis. Its controversial use as an adjunct to scaling and root planing (SRP) is discussed. The present study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of adjunctive Er, Cr:YSGG laser application following conventional SRP. A total of 30 patients with chronic periodontitis were enrolled in the study. The quadrants of each patient were allocated to either SRP or SRP + laser. A total of 3,654 sites with pocket depths ≥ 4 m

Adjunctive Use of PerioCream Following Scaling and Root Planing: Preliminary Findings From an Observational Clinical Study.

Background Scaling and root planing (SRP) remains the standard of care for non-surgical periodontal therapy, but its long-term effectiveness is often limited by microbial recolonization and persistent inflammation. These challenges have led to growing interest in adjunctive topical agents that can enhance healing, reduce discomfort, and improve patient adherence. PerioCream, a mucoadhesive formulation based on NitrAdine®, has shown broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity, anti-inflammatory effects, and modulation of the oral microbiota in both laboratory and early clinical studies. Objective Thi

KTP laser therapy as an adjunctive to scaling and root planing in treatment of chronic periodontitis.

OBJECTIVE: The main goal of periodontal treatment is to control infection and, thereby, curb disease progression. Recent studies have suggested that the use of a laser as an adjunct to scaling and root planing (SRP) might improve the effectiveness of conventional periodontal treatment. The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the clinical effects of potassium-titanyl-phosphate (KTP) laser therapy in the treatment of chronic periodontitis in combination with traditional SRP. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-four patients with untreated chronic periodontitis were treated using a split-mou

Evaluation of scaling and root planing effect in generalized chronic periodontitis by fractal and multifractal analysis.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Fractal and multifractal analysis are useful additional non-invasive methods for quantitative description of complex morphological features. However, the quantitative and qualitative assessment of morphologic changes within human gingival cells and tissues are still unexplored. The aim of this work is to assess the structural gingival changes in patients with generalized chronic periodontitis (GCP), before and after scaling and root planing (SRP) by using fractal and multifractal analysis. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Twelve adults with untreated chronic periodontitis were

Amoxicillin/metronidazole therapy may improve the effectiveness of scaling and root planing in patients with periodontitis.

SYSTEMATIC REVIEW CONCLUSION: Preliminary evidence suggests scaling and root planing (SRP) in combination with amoxicillin (AMX)/metronidazole (MET)(SRP + AMX/MET) therapy may be more effective in treating chronic periodontitis(CP) than is SRP alone. CRITICAL SUMMARY ASSESSMENT: Preliminary evidence from a meta-analysis of four randomized clinical trials (RCTs) seems to support the effectiveness of systemic AMX/MET therapy as an adjunct to SRP alone in treating CP, although safety data are incomplete. EVIDENCE QUALITY RATING: Limited.

Amoxicillin and metronidazole as an adjunct to full-mouth scaling and root planing of chronic periodontitis.

BACKGROUND: It has been suggested that scaling and root planing of all pockets within a few hours and chlorhexidine treatments (full-mouth disinfection) may reduce the need for supplementary therapies. The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical benefit of amoxicillin and metronidazole administered immediately after completion of full-mouth periodontal debridement in patients with chronic periodontitis. METHODS: This was a single-center, double-masked, placebo-controlled, randomized longitudinal study of 6 months' duration. Fifty-one patients received full-mouth periodontal debridement
