Neonatal rotavirus infection and its relation to cord blood antibodies.

Among 274 neonates born at the maternity services of an urban hospital in India, 36.1% of the infants shed rotavirus in feces (as detected by ELISA) by 72 h of life. The excretion rate increased to 70.3% among the 120 infants who stayed for 5 days or more at the hospital. Diarrhoeal symptoms of mild and self-limited nature were observed only in 19.2% of the rotavirus excretors, the remaining being asymptomatic. Among the 98 infants who received supplement feeds, 49% acquired rotavirus infection as against 24.7% of the 150 exclusively breast fed infants (p less than 0.001). Viral RNA in the fec

Rotavirus-specific-IgA and cytokines responses in Ascaris lumbricoides-infected preschool-aged Nigerian children following rotavirus vaccination.

Rotavirus diarrhea and Ascaris lumbricoides (Al) infection increase intestinal morbidity and were associated with altered immune responses that compromise the vaccine efficacy in children. The serum level of rotavirus specific IgA (RV-IgA) and cytokine profiles in A. lumbricoides (AI) infected preschool-aged Nigerian children were estimated following oral rotavirus vaccination. Nineteen of the 149 preschool-aged children (aged 6 to 60 months) with Ascaris lumbricoides infection paired with age and sex-matched helminth - free children were administered with oral rotavirus vaccine after intestin

Detailed analysis of BALB/c mice challenged with wild type rotavirus EDIM provide an alternative for infection model of rotavirus.

Mouse is one of the infection animal models for rotavirus. Since the optimal age of mouse sensitive to rotavirus infection thus far has not been unified, we elucidated clinical symptoms, immune responses and pathological changes of mice in different ages after challenged by murine rotavirus wild strain EDIM (Epidemic Diarrhea of Infant Mice) to provide data for the estimation. One-week-old, two-week-old, and three-week-old BALB/c mice were inoculated with EDIM in the challenge dose of 235 ID50, 470 ID50 and 705 ID50 respectively and were compared to mock-infected controls. Rotavirus vaccines: new drug. Rotavirus infection: one case of severe diarrhoea prevented per 100 vaccinated infants.

(1) Each year in France, diarrhoea caused by rotavirus kills about 10 infants under three years of age and leads to about 210 hospitalisations per 100 000 children under 5 years of age. (2) Two new oral rotavirus vaccines designed for immunisation during infancy are marketed or shortly to be marketed in France for the first time; one is based on a human strain and the other on both bovine and human strains. (3) The vaccine based on a human strain has been tested in a double-blind placebo-controlled trial involving about 63 000 infants. It had no statistically significant impact on mortality bu

Amlodipine and Diltiazem Significantly Repress Human Rotavirus Infection In Vitro.

BACKGROUND: Considering the role of calcium in the replication and morphogenesis of rotaviruses, it is hypothesized that decreased cytosolic calcium levels by using calcium channel blockers can subsequently interfere with rotavirus replication. OBJECTIVE: The present study investigated the effects of two calcium ion channel blockers, amlodipine and diltiazem, against human rotavirus infection. METHODS: Cytotoxic effects of the drugs on MA-104 cells were evaluated using the neutral red assay. The effects of amlodipine and diltiazem at non-toxic concentrations on human rotavirus were examined

Viral metagenomics of the gut virome of diarrheal children with Rotavirus A infection.

Diarrhea is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in children worldwide and represents a major dysbiosis event. Rotavirus has been recognized as a global leading pathogen of diarrhea. This study is aimed at investigating differences in the gut virome between diarrheal children and healthy controls. In 2018, 76 diarrheal fecal samples and 27 healthy fecal samples in Shanghai and 40 diarrheal fecal samples and 19 healthy fecal samples in Taizhou were collected to investigate the composition of the gut virome. Viral metagenomic analyses revealed that the alpha diversity of the diarrheal viro

Transient lesion in the splenium of the corpus callosum due to rotavirus infection.

Transient signal changes in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the splenium of the corpus callosum (SCC) can result from many different reasons, including encephalitis and encephalopathy caused by infection, seizures, metabolic disorders and asphyxia. We report a case of a 6-year-old Polish girl with rotavirus infection demonstrating a reversible SCC lesion on diffusion-weighted MRI images. She presented six episodes of generalized tonic seizures with mild acute gastroenteritis. Stool test for rotavirus antigen was positive. At the time of admission imaging showed the hyperintense region in T

In silico study of potential autoimmune threats from rotavirus infection.

Rotavirus, the major cause of infantile nonbacterial diarrhea, was found to be associated with development of diabetes-associated auto-antibodies. In our study we tried to find out further potential autoimmune threats of this virus using bioinformatics approach. We took rotaviral proteins to study similarity with Homo sapiens proteome and found most conserved structural protein VP6 matches at two regions with ryanodine receptor, an autoimmune target associated with myasthenia gravis. Myasthenia gravis, a chronic neurodegenerative autoimmune disorder with no typical known reason, is characteriz

Rotavirus infection enhances lipopolysaccharide-induced intussusception in a mouse model.

Unexpected reports of intussusception after vaccination with the live tetravalent rotavirus vaccine RotaShield resulted in voluntary withdrawal of the vaccine. Intussusception, a condition in which the intestine acutely invaginates upon itself, is the most common cause of intestinal obstruction in children. We report here the development of a mouse model to study rotavirus-induced intussusception. In this model, both homologous murine and heterologous simian rotavirus strains significantly enhanced the rate of lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced intussusception, and this enhancement was replicati

Detection and molecular characterisation of rotavirus and norovirus infections in Jordanian children with acute gastroenteritis.

Rotavirus and norovirus are globally important causes of paediatric gastroenteritis, but no studies of viral genotypes have been reported from Jordan. We undertook a molecular epidemiological study in children hospitalised with acute gastroenteritis in Jordan between January 2006 and December 2007. Among 368 children, rotavirus and norovirus infections were detected in 49.5% and 11.4% of children, respectively. Rotavirus genotypes P[8],G1 (56%), P[4],G2 (14%) and P[8],G9 (13%) were most commonly identified, consistent with results of global rotavirus surveillance studies. Norovirus GII.3 was t
