This article describes a successful direct pulp capping of a mature symptomatic mandibular second molar in a 14-year-old girl. The patient was referred with sensitivity to cold beverages and pain on chewing on the second left mandibular molar. Clinical examinations revealed extensive coronal caries and sensitivity to percussion. Radiographically, the tooth was mature and had a widened apical periodontal ligament (PDL) and a narrow periapical lesion. The concluding diagnosis was symptomatic irreversible pulpitis with symptomatic apical periodontitis. Treatment included caries removal under rubb

After investigating the literature, we suggest these guidelines for tooth bleaching: If bleaching solutions of high concentration are used, prevent accidental exposure of gingival tissues to the solutions by use of a rubber dam. If using lower concentrations of bleaching solutions, avoid long-term exposures to gingival tissues. To maintain pulp vitality, keep bleaching time and temperatures to a minimum. Check teeth for exposed dentin and enamel fractures. Advise patients that thermal sensitivity may occur after the bleaching procedure and may persist for several days. Prescribe premedication

Angioedema is the diffuse edematous swelling of the soft tissues that most commonly involves the submucosal and subcutaneous connective tissues. It can also affect the connective tissues of the respiratory and gastrointestinal tract. The most common pathogenesis is the degranulation of mast cells, leading to histamine release and increased vascular permeability. The immunoglobulin E (IgE)-mediated hypersensitivity reactions are triggered by foods, preservatives such as sodium benzoate used in peanut butter, dust, drugs like angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACE) like captopril, enalapr

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this report is to present a rare case of allergic chelitis secondary to latex in an elderly diabetic patient. There are very few reported cases of allergic cheilitis in literature. Most of the reported cases of allergic chelitis were secondary to cosmetics, tooth pastes or impression materials. Few cases of rubber dam induced allergic cheilitis and stomatitis reported.
METHODS: Since the patient was diabetic on insulin therapy and belonged to the elderly age group, utmost caution was observed while performing diagnostic tests and treatment procedures. The use test w

Background: Cross-infection control is a dynamic field that requires frequent updates due to emerging diseases, advancement in technology, and scientific knowledge. Despite wide publication of guidelines, a laxity in compliance to the standard precautions for infection control by dental health-care personnel (DHCP) has been reported globally. Therefore, there is need to review previous shortcomings in order to adequately secure dental practices during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. The aim of the study was to determine knowledge and infection control practices by dentists in

The removal of tissues affected by caries lesions is one of the most frequent procedures in daily dental practice. The aim of this study was to collect information about the habits of members of the academic and non-academic dental community in Argentina regarding the use and conditioning of burs employed in the removal of dentin during the treatment of carious lesions. A 14- item questionnaire was prepared, and once validated in small groups, it was sent to three lists of dental subscribers through the computer services area of the School of Dentistry, University of Buenos Aires, Argentina (F

Dental caries is often referred to as an infectious disease, which means different things to different people. Pediatric dentists may be tempted to liken caries to other childhood diseases they encounter yet treat caries from mostly a mechanical or surgical approach. On the other end of the spectrum are clinicians who view the oral cavity as a site teaming with bacteria and think that reducing the overall microbial mass using antimicrobial agents will somehow affect this infectious disease. Here, we argue for another view, that is, to combine the most effective portion of each therapy to yield

Bacteremia resulting from dental extraction is regarded as an important cause of bacterial endocarditis, and it is therefore recommended that patients undergoing tooth extraction be given prophylactic antibiotics. As dental procedures other than extractions may also cause bacteremias, we studied a variety of dental procedures routinely used in pediatric dentistry. Blood samples for cultures were obtained 30 s after each of 13 dental operative procedures in 735 anesthetized children aged 2-16 years. Four procedures used for conservative dentistry caused bacteremias significantly more often than

Ethylenethiourea (ETU) is a specific neuroteratogen that induces communicating hydrocephalus ex vacuo at oral doses far lower than those that cause any observable toxic sign or 50% death (LD50) in the rat dam. The teratogenic activity appears to be related to ETU itself and not to its metabolites. It is dependent upon the presence of an imidazolidine ring with a specific molecular location of sulfur atom. It is unlikely that ETU-induced alterations in thyroid function or thyroxine levels in the maternal rat are involved in teratogenic activity. The initial target following maternal dosing with

BACKGROUND: Full pulpotomy has gained increasing attention as a conservative treatment option for managing complicated crown fractures and pulp exposures in mature permanent teeth. However, little is known about how undergraduate dental students perceive this treatment approach and which factors influence their willingness to adopt it in clinical practice.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate undergraduate dental students' knowledge, attitudes, and preferences regarding full pulpotomy and to identify factors associated with willingness to use full pulpotomy as a definitive treatment option

STUDY DESIGN: A randomised parallel controlled clinical trial was conducted between 2013 and 2015 at the University of Sao Paulo, Brazil, to assess the impact of pulpectomy or extraction on the oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) of children with pulp necrosis in primary molars.
STUDY SELECTION: Children between the ages of 3 and 5 who were in good health but had extensive caries in at least one primary molar with signs of pulpal necrosis (also as seen radiographically, caries reaching the pulp with no signs of internal or external resorption) were considered for inclusion. Additiona

BACKGROUND: External cervical root resorption (ECRR) is an uncommon and often asymptomatic condition whose early diagnosis is challenging. When located on the buccal aspect of posterior teeth, treatment should address both lesion control and long-term periodontal stability.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 67-year-old healthy, nonsmoking female presented with RT1 gingival recessions in the mandibular right sextant and a cervical defect on Tooth #28. Clinical and radiographic evaluation confirmed ECRR with a favorable prognosis. Treatment included a partial-thickness flap for surgical access, complete deb

OBJECTIVES: Addressing a single-tooth gap in the anterior region, resulting from aplasia or trauma, poses both esthetic and functional challenges. This case report presents the restoration of a young adult with a cleft, exhibiting anterior hypoplasia and aplasia in the canine and incisor regions, using all-ceramic cantilever resin-bonded fixed dental prostheses.
METHOD AND MATERIALS: After verification of esthetic and functional considerations through a diagnostic wax-up and an intraoral mock-up, three anterior all-ceramic cantilever resin-bonded fixed dental prostheses made of veneered zirco

Morphologic anterior tooth alterations and diastemata between the anterior teeth are often considered a major esthetic problem. In most cases, the treatment of these conditions involves a multidisciplinary approach. Orthodontic treatment together with direct composite resin veneers are a viable option to close diastemata and alter tooth shape. The extent and etiology of the diastemata must be considered and properly evaluated for the treatment. The present article is a case report of a patient with multiple diastemata in the maxillary anterior teeth, dental crowding, and peg-shaped lateral inc

Tooth fusion, the union of 2 developing dental germs, can affect the primary and permanent dentitions as well as supernumerary teeth. The anatomy of fused teeth represents a challenge when endodontic treatment is needed. This case report describes the endodontic treatment performed in a permanent maxillary incisor fused to a supernumerary tooth. A 10-year-old girl was referred for endodontic treatment in her maxillary left central incisor, which displayed a wide and bifid crown. Periapical radiographs showed that the tooth had 2 crowns with fused roots; the pulp chambers of the crowns communic

Cracked tooth syndrome is known to occur most frequently in heavily restored teeth. Nevertheless, when the symptoms occur in intact teeth, there is difficulty in obtaining a correct diagnosis because it is difficult for the dentist to find where the crack is located. This clinical report describes the diagnostic procedures and the direct bonded composite restoration used to restore an incompletely fractured unrestored maxillary premolar in a 22-year-old female patient. To achieve a correct diagnosis, the following were performed: periapical and bitewing radiographs, percussion and thermal vita

A survey of 100 patients referred to a specialist endodontic practice was undertaken to determine the frequency of various factors associated with continuing pain after endodontic treatment had been commenced by the patient's general dental practitioner. Information was obtained by questioning the patient, examining the tooth, reviewing information supplied by the referring dentist and by observation during subsequent treatment. There were 23 different factors associated with continuing pain--all patients had more than one factor; most (78 per cent) had four, five or six factors; the highest w

Preserving pulp vitality in developing permanent teeth is paramount. This approach facilitates continued root formation, ultimately leading to apical closure, enhanced root strength, and improved overall tooth integrity. This case report details the management of a 17-year-old female patient presenting with dental caries on the right permanent maxillary molar. Clinical and radiographic examinations revealed reversible pulpitis in the tooth with an immature apex. The case highlights the use of a novel bioceramic cement, Bio-C Repair (Angelus, Londrina, Brazil), for apexogenesis. Treatment was p

The restorative management of deep carious lesions and the preservation of pulp vitality of immature teeth present real challenges for dental practitioners. New tricalcium silicate cements are of interest in the treatment of such cases. This case describes the immediate management and the follow-up of an extensive carious lesion on an immature second right mandibular premolar. Following anesthesia and rubber dam isolation, the carious lesion was removed and a partial pulpotomy was performed. After obtaining hemostasis, the exposed pulp was covered with a tricalcium silicate cement (Biodentine,

Maintaining and preserving the remaining pulp vitality is the latest minimally invasive and conservative treatment option. In-depth knowledge of pulp inflammation and its reparative process has enhanced the adaptation of full pulpotomy as a vital pulp therapy. The growing research in dental biomaterials over the last 30-50 years has led to increased interest in such therapy. In this series of three case presentations, the clinical and radiographic outcomes at 12 to 24 months following a mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) full pulpotomy in permanent molars with symptoms of irreversible pulpitis w
