Massive colonic haematoma following blunt trauma sustained playing rugby.

A case is presented of a 24-year-old man who sustained a forceful blow to the right side of the abdomen during a tackle while playing rugby union. The patient was thought to be "winded" and could not play on. He sought medical attention several hours later at the local hospital where initial evaluation revealed mild right iliac fossa tenderness with no signs of peritonism and clinical parameters showed haemodynamic stability. Subsequent ultrasound and CT evaluation revealed a large haematoma involving the caecum and ascending colon. Emergency right haemicolectomy with primary anastomosis was p

Infectious diseases in rugby players: incidence, treatment and prevention.

Participation in rugby football can expose individuals to a variety of infectious diseases both on and off the field of play. The close physical contact and trauma inherent in playing rugby facilitates the transmission of viral, bacterial and fungal pathogens between players and may also lead to the acquisition of potentially lethal infections from the environment, such as tetanus. In the past few years there have been a number of reported outbreaks of infection amongst rugby players in the medical literature. The appearance of HIV infection has focused attention on the potential for transmiss

Occurrence of cervical spine injuries during the rugby scrum.

A retrospective study of cervical spine injuries that occurred during the rugby scrum in the United States was undertaken. In the U.S., from 1970 to 1996, 36 (58%) of the 62 documented injured players injured their cervical spines during the scrum. Thirty-five men (97%) and one woman (3%) were injured. Twenty-three of the injuries (64%) occurred when the opposing packs came together (engagement), and 13 (36%) occurred when the scrum collapsed. Twenty-eight (78%) hookers, seven (19%) props, and one (3%) second-row player were injured. Twenty (56%) hookers and three (8%) props were hurt during e

Rugby injuries of the upper cervical spine. Case reports.

Fractures and dislocations of the upper cervical spine (atlas and axis) differ markedly from those of the lower cervical spine (C3 - C7) because of the unique anatomy and function of these two vertebrae. Case reports of 4 rugby players who sustained serious injuries of the upper cervical spine are presented. The role of the high tackle in causing these injuries is described and the association of head and upper cervical spinal trauma is emphasized. The radiological management of the player with suspected injury is outlined.

Mechanical load monitoring in rugby: limitations and future perspectives.

PURPOSE: Quantifying mechanical work in rugby is essential for improving performance, managing fatigue, and informing load monitoring practices. Traditional metrics that assess acceleration and speed separately fail to capture the interaction between these parameters during gameplay. This study presents an external power approach based on individual acceleration-speed profiles (ASP) to provide an integrated description of players' external work. METHODS: Data were collected from 51 professional rugby matches across two seasons. Traditional metrics and external power indicators derived from AS

Recurrent Pericarditis in a Rugby Player: Imaging-Guided Therapy.

BACKGROUND: Recurrent pericarditis in young athletes is challenging, as relapse risk, treatment duration, and return to play must be balanced. CASE SUMMARY: A 26-year-old rugby player developed recurrent pericarditis after atrial septal defect repair. At initial presentation, she had moderate pericardial late gadolinium enhancement on cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) and a high pericarditis risk score, and she achieved clinical remission on rilonacept. At taper initiation, she was asymptomatic with normal inflammatory biomarkers yet showed mild residual late gadolinium enhancement on CMR. Aft

Neurodegenerative disease risk among former international rugby union players.

BACKGROUND: Autopsy studies of former contact sports athletes, including soccer and rugby players, frequently report chronic traumatic encephalopathy, a neurodegenerative pathology associated with traumatic brain injury. Nevertheless, little is known about the risk of neurodegenerative disease in these populations. We hypothesised that neurodegenerative disease risk would be higher among former elite rugby union players than the general population. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study accessing national electronic records on death certification, hospital admissions and dispensed

White matter abnormalities in active elite adult rugby players.

The recognition, diagnosis and management of mild traumatic brain injuries are difficult and confusing. It is unclear how the severity and number of injuries sustained relate to brain injuries, such as diffuse axonal injury, diffuse vascular injury and progressive neurodegeneration. Advances in neuroimaging techniques enable the investigation of neuropathologies associated with acute and long-term effects of injury. Head injuries are the most commonly reported injury seen during professional rugby. There is increased vigilance for the immediate effects of these injuries in matches, but there h

Attitudes towards protective headgear in UK rugby union players.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Concussions in rugby union pose a major threat to player welfare. Research has found protective headgear offers no significant protection against concussions but suggests a large proportion of players perceive headgear to be effective in preventing concussions. This study aimed to explore UK rugby union players' attitudes towards wearing protective headgear. METHODS: 545 rugby union players (85% male) from a range of playing standards completed an online survey. Quantitative and qualitative data were collected on player attitudes towards protective headgear use. Descriptive st

Irish rugby injury survey: Dungannon Football Club (1986-87).

The injuries sustained during one season by players at an Ulster Senior Rugby Club were documented with reference to time of injury, phase of play, team position, and nature of injury. The overall injury pattern in Irish rugby as found in this study is broadly comparable with that in similar studies in England and Scotland. Eighty-four players were injured in total. Three of these had fractures of which one required hospital admission for open reduction of a fractured wrist. The remaining eighty-one players had various types and grades of soft-tissue damage. The tackle accounted for approximat

Disordered eating within elite male adolescent rugby: a cross-sectional study of the eating habits and attitudes in male academy rugby union players.

BACKGROUND: Due to a range of pressures associated with high-performance environments, elite athletes are at increased risk of eating disorders and disordered eating. Most prevalence studies focus on female athletes in lean or esthetic sports, with males, particularly those competing in power sports, seldom considered. This study addresses this gap by exploring disordered eating in elite male adolescent rugby union players. METHODS: We distributed an online survey to male rugby players aged 16-18 through RFU-affiliated academies. The survey contained three sections: general demographics; the
