Peptic ulcer disease is considered a global health concern, commonly caused by Helicobacter pylori infection, chronic NSAID use, and ethanol-induced gastric mucosal injury. Although proton pump inhibitors and anti-secretory drugs are effective, their prolonged use increases risks of fractures, infections, and nutrient deficiencies, highlighting the urgent need for safer alternatives. The Rumex genus, particularly R. pictus Forssk. aerial parts, has long been employed in Middle Eastern traditional medicine to alleviate gastric inflammation and ulcers. The antiulcer bioassays of the 70% aqueous

Abdominal adhesions following surgical procedures are a significant cause of postoperative complications, including chronic pain, infertility, and intestinal obstruction. Preventing adhesion formation remains a critical focus of preclinical and clinical research. In this study, we evaluated the fibrinolytic and antiadhesive potential of extracts from four plant species: Asphodeline lutea (L.) Rchb., Rheum ribes L., Rubia tinctorum L., and Rumex nepalensis Spreng. Among these, R. nepalensis exhibited the highest fibrinolytic activity in vitro, and bioactivity-guided fractionation led to the iso

The continuous increase in cancer rates, failure of conventional chemotherapies to control the disease, and excessive toxicity of chemotherapies clearly demand alternative approaches. Natural products contain many constituents that can act on various bodily targets to induce pharmacodynamic responses. This study aimed to explore the combined anticancer effects of Rumex obtusifolius (RO) extract and the chemotherapeutic agent 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) on specific molecular targets involved in cancer progression. By focusing on the PI3K/Akt signaling pathway and its related components, such as cytok

Rumex japonicus Houtt. (RJ) is traditionally used in folk medicines to treat patients suffering from skin disease in Korea and other parts of East Asia. However, the beneficial effect of RJ extract on atopic dermatitis (AD) has not been thoroughly examined. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the anti-inflammatory effects of RJ on AD in vitro and in vivo. Treatment with RJ inhibited the phosphorylation of mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) as well as the activation of nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) in tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) stimulated in HaCaT cells. The five-week-old Balb

Hot water extracts of Rheum plamatum and Rheum dentatus (from China) showed molluscicidal activity against the snails Oncomelania hupensis, Biomphalaria glabrata and Bulinus globosus, which are vectors of Schistosoma japonicum, S. mansoni and S. haematobium, respectively. Activity was correlated with antraquinones which were identified by HPLC: rhein and chrysophanol-anthron were most active (> 50% dead snails after 2 days in a 0.03% solution). Molluscicidal activity was intermediate with Rheum-emodin and physcion and was not detectable with cinnamic acid or Aloe-emodin. The snail O. hupensis

Edible and medicinal plants provide a treasure trove of natural phytochemicals for mining the next generation of green food preservatives. Herein, we evaluated antibacterial activities of 55-95% ethanol extracts from the edible rhizome of Rumex madaio (RmEEs). The 75% ethanol extract displayed the strongest antibacterial activity, and its purified fraction 2 (RmEE-F2) blocked the proliferation of common pathogens Staphylococcus aureus and Vibrio cholerae, with minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of 391 μg/mL. RmEE-F2 (1 × MIC) altered the bacterial cell surface biophysical parameters and

Candida albicans is an opportunistic pathogenic yeast and is responsible for candidiasis. It readily colonizes host tissues and implant devices, and forms biofilms, which play an important role in pathogenesis and drug resistance. In this study, the antibiofilm, antihyphal, and antivirulence activities of nepodin, isolated from Rumex japonicus roots, were investigated against a fluconazole-resistant C. albicans strain and against polymicrobial-microorganism-biofilm formation. Nepodin effectively inhibited C. albicans biofilm formation without affecting its planktonic cell growth. Also, Rumex-r
