Health Education Programs Challenges in Rural Communities: Experiences of Health Educators and Healthcare Authorities.

BACKGROUND: Health education is one of the main areas of primary health care and it is improbable that health promotion will succeed without it. However, studies show that there are some problems when implementing health education programs in rural communities. This study was carried out to illuminate the barriers to health education using Ardabil's health center manager's and health educators' experiences. METHODS: This was a qualitative study using the content analysis approach. Twenty-seven health educators and managers were selected to participate in the study considering the maximum vari

Differences in the health, mental health and health-promoting behaviours of rural versus urban cancer survivors in Australia.

PURPOSE: People affected by cancer who live in rural Australia experience inferior survival compared to their urban counterparts. This study determines whether self-reported physical and mental health, as well as health-promoting behaviours, also differ between rural and urban Australian adults with a history of cancer. METHODS: Weighted, representative population data were collected via the South Australian Monitoring and Surveillance System between 1 January 2010 and 1 June 2015. Data for participants with a history of cancer (n = 4295) were analysed with adjustment for survey year, gender,

Toward Sustainable and Equitable Rural Health - Recommendations for Multisector Action.

Rural communities face widening mortality gaps driven less by geography than by policy choices shaping care delivery, workforce distribution, and investment. Informed by the 2025 Dartmouth Rural Health Symposium, this article synthesizes evidence and field experience to outline a practical reform agenda. The authors propose redefining rural hospitals around essential, financially viable services; scaling team-based and artificial intelligence-supported care; modernizing payment models; and rebuilding trust through community partnership. A phased implementation plan proposes near- and long-term

Impact of Rural School-Based Health Centers on Asthma Management.

OBJECTIVE: To test the hypothesis that students with asthma who have access to school-based health centers (SBHCs) receive more recommended preventive care and use less emergency care, we compared patterns of health care utilization among rural students with asthma by SBHC access. STUDY DESIGN: Using a cross-sectional design, we analyzed encounters for all patients ages 4 through 19 living in 4 counties covered by a health care system that sponsors a network of SBHCs in rural upstate New York. Patient addresses for each encounter were geocoded to school districts, allowing us to determine whe

Oral Health Care Strategies in Rural Communities: A Case Study.

Dental caries affect 97% of the world's population during their lifetime. Early childhood caries are the number one chronic disease affecting young children, and it disproportionately affects children of low-income families. American Academy of Pediatrics recommends fluoridated toothpaste to all children starting at tooth eruption, regardless of caries risk. In addition, fluoride varnish is recommended in all children every 3 to 6 months from tooth emergence until they have an established dental home. The health disparities that are most apparent in the rural communities are inadequate prenata

Opioid Use Disorder Community Education Events: Rural Public Health Implications.

The opioid overdose epidemic continues to disproportionately impact underserved rural areas throughout the nation, with many of these rural areas experiencing greater opioid-related mortality rates than their urban counterparts. With limited treatment infrastructure and resources, two rural communities in Southeast Utah utilized community-based participatory research collaboration principles to develop, implement, and evaluate a series of evidence-based community opioid education events. This practical and quantitative study surveying 123 participants describes the collaborative efforts of two

Proposed Solutions for Improving Maternal Health Care in Rural America.

Increasing hospital and labor & delivery (L&D) closures have led to declining access to hospital obstetric care in rural areas across the country. These closures increase the burden on women and families living in rural communities, who often must drive long distances for prenatal visits and delivery. The lack of maternal health care in rural America can also result in several adverse maternal and infant outcomes including premature birth, low birth weight, out of hospital births, maternal and infant morbidity and mortality, and increased risk of postpartum depression. The reasons for these cl

Women's groups' perceptions of maternal health issues in rural Malawi.

BACKGROUND: Improvements in preventive and care-seeking behaviours to reduce maternal mortality in rural Africa depend on the knowledge and attitudes of women and communities. Surveys have indicated a poor awareness of maternal health problems by individual women. We report the perceptions of women's groups to such issues in the rural Mchinji district of Malawi. METHODS: Participatory women's groups in the Mchinji district identified maternal health problems (172 groups, 3171 women) and prioritised problems they considered most important (171 groups, 2833 women). In-depth qualitative data was

Rural health care workforce retention measures: A rapid scoping review.

PURPOSE: Rural Veterans face persistent barriers to care, often exacerbated by health care workforce shortages. Although recruitment initiatives are important, retaining providers in rural areas is equally critical to sustaining access and continuity of care. This rapid scoping review examined how "rural workforce retention" is defined and measured in the peer-reviewed literature and synthesized recommended reporting elements to improve clarity and comparability. METHODS: Six bibliographic databases were searched (2014-2025) for English-language studies of rural health care in the United Stat
