Developing a nurse-led reproductive health mobile health unit in rural Illinois: Opportunity to promote faculty practice and student training.

Mobile health units (MHUs) in the United States have grown to over 3,000 nationwide, increasing health care access and equity to underserved communities. Although MHUs have demonstrated improved patient outcomes, there is a lack of literature on partnering with nursing colleges and their faculty. This report will share how a college of nursing and their office of faculty practice and partnerships in a large midwestern state university implemented a nurse-led MHU to deliver reproductive health care to rural communities in central Illinois, incorporating advanced practice registered nurses (APRN

Short report: Limited effectiveness of screening mammography in addition to clinical breast examination by trained nurse midwives in rural Jakarta, Indonesia.

Low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) are undergoing an increase in incidence of breast cancer, but have inadequate resources to implement mammographic screening. Clinical breast examination (CBE) has been suggested as an alternative to mammography in these settings. We compared the results of CBE screening by 47 midwives and 15 trained lay health workers to results of independently performed mammographic screening in an unscreened population of 1,179 women in Jakarta, Indonesia. Two hundred and eight-nine (24.5%) of the screened women had a suspicious finding on CBE and/or mammography. Six

Nurse mentor perceptions in the delivery of a home-based cardiac rehabilitation program to support patients living in rural areas: An interpretive study.

Home-based cardiac rehabilitation (CR) programs improve health outcomes for people diagnosed with heart disease. Mentoring of patients by nurses trained in CR has been proposed as an innovative model of cardiac care. Little is known however, about the experience of mentors facilitating such programs and adapting to this new role. The aim of this qualitative study was to explore nurse mentor perceptions of their role in the delivery of a home-based CR program for rural patients unable to attend a hospital or outpatient CR program. Seven nurses mentored patients by telephone providing patients w

'Staying strong': A constructivist grounded theory of how registered nurses deal with the impact of trauma-related events in rural acute care practice.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: This study explored how Registered Nurses (RNs) in rural practice deal with psychologically traumatic events when living and working in the same rural community over time. BACKGROUND: Rural RNs who are exposed to trauma may be at high risk for psychological distress (e.g. secondary traumatic stress, vicarious trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder), in the context of isolated practice and slower emergency response times. DESIGN AND METHODS: Charmaz's constructivist grounded theory methodology was chosen for this qualitative study. Purposeful sampling was used to recru

"An HIV Free Generation": A Qualitative Inquiry Into Mapping Intersectional Discourses of Preexposure Prophylaxis for Women Among Female Nurses in Rural South Africa.

South Africa has one of the highest HIV prevalence rates in the world, with women and girls bearing the greatest burden. Although HIV preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is effective, data on its implementation in rural South Africa remain limited. Our study explores how female nurses in Msinga, South Africa, navigate communal hopes and anxieties regarding PrEP for women. Using an intersectional framework, we conducted semistructured interviews with health care providers and engaged in thematic analysis with a sample of female nurses employed in Msinga, South Africa, to understand their perspective

The mediating role of cardiac patients' perception of nursing care on the relationship between kinesiophobia, anxiety and depression in rural hospitals: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Kinesiophobia could act as a significant barrier against physical activity following cardiac procedures worsening cardiovascular health problems and potentially leading to conditions like hospital-acquired anxiety and depression among patients with cardiovascular disease (CVD). Nurses are the vanguard health care team who can aid patients in taking proactive steps to overcome fear of movement following cardiac procedures. AIM: The overarching aim is to investigate the relationship between kinesiophobia, anxiety and depression, and patients' perception of nursing care. METHOD: A d

Predictors of work engagement among rural and remote nurses who provide hospice, palliative, and end of life care: Results from a national study.

BACKGROUND: The availability of palliative health care professionals is considered a global concern, especially within rural/remote practice settings. Nurses across all domains of practice are expected to advocate for high-quality hospice, palliative, and end of life (H/P/EOL) care. However, within many rural/remote geographical areas, formal palliative care services are non-existent, leaving generalist nurses to take on this complex responsibility. METHODS: Examining results from a Pan-Canadian cross-sectional survey of rural and remote nurses (N = 3,822), this paper explores a subset (n = 2

Banging My Head Against a Brick Wall! Enablers and Barriers to Nurse Practitioners Delivering Opioid Agonist Treatments in Regional/Rural Victoria, Australia.

The Victorian government's Alcohol and other drugs (AOD) workforce policy calls for greater recruitment of alcohol and other drugs nurse practitioners (AODNPs). However, frontline organisations in Victoria report several systemic barriers to their recruitment and retention. Additionally, there is scant Australian literature that examines the experiences of AODNP in opioid agonist treatment (OAT) provision in regional/rural areas. This research aims to address this gap by examining the AODNP workforce issues in delivering pharmacotherapy treatments in regional/rural areas of Victoria. Using an

Setting up a nurse-led model of care for management of hypertension and diabetes mellitus in a high HIV prevalence context in rural Zimbabwe: a descriptive study.

BACKGROUND: In the light of the increasing burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) on health systems in low- and middle-income countries, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa, context-adapted, cost-effective service delivery models are now required as a matter of urgency. We describe the experience of setting up and organising a nurse-led Diabetes Mellitus (DM) and Hypertension (HTN) model of care in rural Zimbabwe, a low-income country with unique socio-economic challenges and a dual disease burden of HIV and NCDs. METHODS: Mirroring the HIV experience, we designed a conceptual framework wi

Knowledge, Culture, and Communication in HIV Prevention: A Mixed-Methods Study of Nurse Practitioners' Roles in Pre-exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) Uptake in Rural and Underserved Areas.

HIV remains a critical global public health concern. While no cure exists, treatments like antiretroviral therapy (ART) and pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) effectively reduce transmission rates. However, PrEP uptake is low, especially in areas facing stigma and misinformation, such as the southern United States, where high HIV stigma further hinders compliance. This study examined PrEP-related knowledge, attitudes, and prescribing behaviors among 179 nurse practitioners (NPs) in one southeastern state. Results indicated significant gaps in PrEP knowledge. Qualitative interviews highlighted sti

Our AIDS Walks Are Only Beginning: A Commentary and Call to Increase HIV Advocacy Efforts in the Rural Upper Midwestern United States From Nurses With Lived Experience.

In the rural Upper Midwest, persistent HIV-related stigma and limited services continue to impede care for people living with HIV, despite advances in treatment that have reduced morbidity and mortality. Community-based advocacy initiatives, such as the Black Hills AIDS Walk, can decrease stigma, increase HIV education, and expand access to comprehensive care. Targeted strategies, such as contact-based stigma reduction, provider and public education, and expansion of local and telehealth services, address barriers unique to rural settings. Nurses are well positioned to lead these efforts throu
