We hypothesized that Tourette's syndrome (TS) patients would display abnormal control of saccades because of overlap between brain areas suspected in TS pathophysiology and those involved saccade control. Subjects were required to look toward (pro-saccade) or away from (anti-saccade) a visual target. Saccadic reaction times were elevated among TS subjects in all tasks. The occurrence of reflexive pro-saccades in the immediate anti-saccade task was normal, suggesting that the ability to inhibit reflexive saccades was not impaired in TS. However, timing errors (eye movements made prior to GO sig

Humans saccade to faces in their periphery faster than to other types of objects. Previous research has highlighted the potential importance of the upper face region in this phenomenon, but it remains unclear whether this is driven by the eye region. Similarly, it remains unclear whether such rapid saccades are exclusive to faces or generalize to other semantically salient stimuli. Furthermore, it is unknown whether individuals differ in their face-specific saccadic reaction times and, if so, whether such differences could be linked to differences in face fixations during free viewing. Saccadic eye movements are central to primate behavior and serve to move the eyes to visual objects of interest. Express saccades, unlike regular saccades, occur with very short reaction times, a behavior necessary for speeded reactions in goal-directed behavior. Previous studies have shown that introduction of a blank interval (gap) between the fixation point offset and the saccadic target onset leads to an increase in the number of express saccades and that the superior colliculus plays a crucial role in the generation of express saccades. A longstanding hypothesis asserted that express sacc

In order to further our understanding of action-blindsight, four hemianopic patients suffering from visual field loss contralateral to a unilateral occipital lesion were compared to six healthy controls during a double task of verbally reported target detection and saccadic responses toward the target. Three oculomotor tasks were used: a fixation task (i.e., without saccade) and two saccade tasks (eliciting reflexive and voluntary saccades, using step and overlap 600 ms paradigms, respectively), in separate sessions. The visual target was briefly presented at two different eccentricities (5° a

The objective of the present study was to investigate cerebellar influences on cortical components of saccadic eye movement programming in human subjects. In 24 patients with a localized cerebellar lesion, saccadic eye movements were recorded in different reflexive (step, gap, overlap) and intentional (anti, memory, short memory sequences) tasks and compared to 23 healthy controls. The cerebellar lesions led to impairments in different saccade parameters. Cerebellar patients tended to show hypermetria and increased latencies compared to the control group. In particular, they executed significa

Saccades normally place the eye on target with one smooth movement. In late-onset Tay-Sachs (LOTS), intrasaccadic transient decelerations occur that may result from (1) premature omnipause neuron (OPN) re-activation due to malfunction of the latch circuit that inhibits OPNs for the duration of the saccade or (2) premature inhibitory burst neuron (IBN) activation due to fastigial nucleus (FN) dysregulation by the dorsal cerebellar vermis. Neuroanatomic analysis of a LOTS brain was performed. Purkinje cells were absent and gliosis of the granular cell layer was present in the dorsal cerebellar v

The goal of this study was to evaluate the ability of binocular phase planes to detect disconjugacy of horizontal saccades. We recorded horizontal saccades in 22 patients with disease affecting the brainstem reticular formation, medial longitudinal fasciculus (INO), abducens nerve, neuromuscular junction and extraocular muscles, and in 10 age-matched controls. We found that patients with disorders of the brainstem, including INO, or the cranial nerves, showed significant velocity disconjugacy in the first 10% of the displacement. Patients with myasthenia gravis did not show early disconjugacy,

Electrophysiological studies in monkeys have identified effector-related regions in the posterior parietal cortex (PPC). The lateral intraparietal area, for example, responds preferentially for saccades, whereas the parietal reach region responds preferentially for arm movements. However, the degree of effector selectivity actually observed is limited; each area contains neurons selective for the nonpreferred effector, and many neurons in both areas respond for both effectors. We used functional magnetic resonance imaging to assess the degree of effector preference at the population level, foc

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate quantitative measures of eye movements as possible biomarkers in prediagnostic and early stages of Huntington disease (HD).
METHODS: The study sample (n = 215) included individuals both at risk and recently diagnosed with HD. All participants completed a uniform clinical evaluation which included administration of the Unified Huntington's Disease Rating Scale (UHDRS) by a movement disorder neurologist and molecular testing to determine HD gene status. A high resolution, video-based eye tracking system was employed to quantify measures of eye movement (error rates, laten

Tourette's syndrome is characterized by involuntary tics and, although the underlying pathogenesis and pathophysiology of Tourette's syndrome remains unclear, it is suspected that basal ganglia structures are involved. The basal ganglia also play an important role in the control of saccadic eye movements and we therefore hypothesize that Tourette's syndrome patients have abnormal control of saccadic eye movements. In this study, 10 subjects with Tourette's syndrome and 10 age- and sex-matched controls performed four different oculomotor paradigms requiring the execution and/or suppression of r

To examine the link between binocular vision and binocular coordination of saccades we studied subjects with convergent strabismus since childhood with mild or no amblyopia: three subjects had small squint (< 10 prism D) and preserved peripheral binocular visual function with gross stereopsis; four subjects had larger squint (18-35 prism D) and no detectable stereopsis. A standard paradigm was used to elicit horizontal saccades; binocular recordings were made with the IRIS device. For subjects with small strabismus, saccades were disconjugate (unequal between the two eyes) typically by 1 deg.

PURPOSE: Infantile strabismus syndrome is a common disorder characterized by a chronic misalignment of the eyes that is present in infancy. The disorder is associated with a wide range of abnormalities including severe impairments of binocular vision, impaired depth perception, impaired motion perception, amblyopia, nystagmus, a loss of disparity vergence, asymmetrical smooth pursuit gain, and saccade disconjugacy. The chronic inability to direct both eyes to the same visual target forces the brain to decide which eye to bring to any given object of interest in the visual field. We wondered if

Humans actively sample their environment with saccadic eye movements to bring relevant information into high-acuity foveal vision. Despite being lower in resolution, peripheral information is also available before each saccade. How the pre-saccadic extrafoveal preview of a visual object influences its post-saccadic processing is still an unanswered question. The current study investigated this question by simultaneously recording behavior and fixation-related brain potentials while human subjects made saccades to face stimuli. We manipulated the relationship between pre-saccadic "previews" and

In response to passive high-acceleration head impulses, patients with low vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) gains often produce covert (executed while the head is still moving) corrective saccades in the direction of deficient slow phases. Here we examined 23 patients using passive, and 9 also active, head impulses with acute (< 10 days from onset) unilateral vestibular neuritis and low VOR gains. We found that when corrective saccades are larger than 10°, the slow-phase component of the VOR is inhibited, even though inhibition increases further the time to reacquire the fixation target. We also f

A slowing of saccadic eye movements is one of the key symptoms of progressive supranuclear palsy and therefore represents a core functional domain of the current diagnostic criteria. However, there is considerable overlap between the saccade velocities of healthy people and patients in early stages. Therefore, a highly specific discrimination between patients and controls based on eye velocity often results in a considerable loss of sensitivity. Another symptom of progressive supranuclear palsy is a high frequency of square wave jerks formed by small involuntary fixational saccades. Using ROC

Patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) exhibit delayed saccades and saccadic hypometria; Still, the diagnostic yield of saccadic parameters is limited in clinical settings. We hypothesized that, as motor fluctuations, fluctuations would also be documented on saccadic parameters, and these could serve as a feasible interpretative measure for clinical application. This cross-sectional study evaluated a prospectively recruited de novo cohort of 114 patients with PD in South Korea, collected from February 2022 to August 2024. All participants performed horizontal and vertical saccades following a

Some studies have highlighted the impact of age on the saccade properties. This study aimed to investigate whether prosaccade and antisaccade metrics vary with age. The participant groups included 49 young adults, 25 middle-aged adults, and 31 older adults. Participants were instructed to look at the stimulus in the prosaccade task and to look in the opposite direction for 1000 milliseconds (ms) in the antisaccade task. Both prosaccade and antisaccade latencies were prolonged in older and middle-aged adults compared to younger adults. The rates of correct antisaccades were lower in older and m

Eye movements and spatial attention are both crucial to visual perception. Orienting gaze to objects of interest is achieved by voluntary saccades (VSs) driven by internal goals or reactive saccades (RSs) triggered automatically by sudden environmental changes. Both VSs and RSs are known to undergo plastic adjustments to maintain their accuracy throughout life, driven by saccadic adaptation processes. Spatial attention enhances visual processing within a restricted zone, and it can be shifted voluntarily following our internal goals (endogenous) or automatically in response to unexpected chang

Introduction: For decades, the saccadic system has been a favorite target of neurophysiologists seeking to elucidate the neural control of eye movements, partly because saccades are characterized by a set of highly stereotyped relationships between amplitude, duration, and peak velocity. There is a large literature describing the dynamics and trajectories of these movements in normal primates, but there are no similarly detailed analyses for subjects with infantile strabismus syndrome. Previous studies have shown the amplitudes and directions of saccades often differ for the two eyes in this d
