[Leptospirosis at the Clinic for Infectious Diseases in Novi Sad 1984-1993].

We examined the clinical picture and course of leptospiral infections in 50 patients treated at the Clinic during the period 1984-1993. Most patients were 11-20 years of age (9 years the youngest and 77 years the oldest, mean age being 25.16). The disease more often occurred in male patients, 44 (88%). There were 30 (60%) patients with gastrointestinal symptoms, while 21 (42%) had liver and kidney infections. Meningeal syndrome was established in 25 (50%) and serous meningitis in 13 (26%). Leptospiral infections represented average and serious infections with complications in 8 (16%) patients,

Perceptual asymmetry for happy-sad chimeric faces: effects of mood.

Happy-sad chimeric face drawings were viewed in free vision by normal subjects. A significant and reliable perceiver bias toward the left hemiface when judging facial expression was found in right-handers whereas no consistent bias was found in non-right handers. This bias tended to be more pronounced in females. Subjects' current mood influenced their choice of facial affect but not their perceptual bias. In a further experiment, subjects were tested during induced elation and once more during induced depression. Again, though these moods increased the number of happy and sad choices respecti

Emotion Modulation through Music after Sadness Induction-The Iso Principle in a Controlled Experimental Study.

Music therapy intervention manuals suggest that individuals who suffer from affective disorders benefit from listening to music according to the iso principle. The iso principle comprises listening to music that matches the current mood of patients at first, and then to gradually shift to music that represents a desired mood. Within the current study, we investigate whether the sequence of music with different emotional valence can modulate the emotional state. All participants were healthy adults who underwent a sadness induction via a movie clip. They were subsequently divided into four expe

Loneliness, sadness, and feelings of social disconnection in older adults during the COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: Public health measures to control the COVID-19 pandemic have led to feelings of loneliness among older adults, which, prior to COVID, has been associated with subsequent morbidity and mortality. We sought to identify differences in feelings of loneliness, sadness, and social disconnection early in the pandemic across racial groups, and possible mitigating factors. METHODS: We performed a cross-sectional analysis using the weighted nationally-representative Medicare Current Beneficiaries Survey COVID-19 supplement, collected summer 2020. We included all Medicare beneficiaries aged

Sadness, suicide, and drug misuse in Arkansas: results from the Youth Risk Behavior Survey 2011.

Exposure to drugs is unfortunately common among high school students and its use has been linked to depression and suicide risk. We used the 2011 Arkansas Youth Risk Behavior Survey to estimate the prevalence of drug abuse and to measure its association with teen suicidality. Three types of substance misuse were reported by more than 10% of Arkansas high school students: cannabis (33.3% ever use). inhalants (18.7% ever use). and prescription drugs without a prescription (13.2% ever use). We found in all suicide outcomes a stronger association with prescription drug abuse, followed by inhalant

Sadness regulation in daily life in remitted depression: Regulatory repertoire composition and affect-dependent effectiveness.

BACKGROUND: Emotion regulation (ER) vulnerabilities that confer risk for depression and persist into remission remain poorly understood. Prior work in depression has primarily examined ER strategies independently, leaving unclear how much each strategy is used within an individual's regulatory repertoire (relative strategy use). We examined whether individuals with remitted depression (rMDD) differ from never-depressed healthy comparisons (HC) in relative strategy use and whether sadness mediates these differences. We also explored whether strategy effectiveness is attenuated in rMDD, particul

Heart Rate Variability, Autonomic Reactivity, and Emotion Regulation during Sadness Induction in Somatic Symptom Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Preliminary evidence suggests altered heart rate variability (HRV) and impaired emotion regulation (ER) in somatic symptom disorder (SSD). Moreover, HRV can be considered an index of ER. Yet, to date, research on HRV and emotional reactivity in SSD is scarce and findings are inconsistent. Thus, this study aimed to examine ER differences, HRV at rest, and in response to emotion induction in persons with SSD compared to controls. METHODS: The sample comprised 44 persons with SSD (DSM-5; 79.5% female, Mage = 45.7, SD = 14.7) and 41 persons without SSD (non-SSD; 78% female, Mage = 44.

School-aged children's depressive rumination is associated with their reactivity to sadness but not fear.

It is well documented that a ruminative response style is associated with greater risk for depression in children and adults. Less is known about the association between rumination and stress reactivity, particularly among children. Similarly, the extent to which depressive rumination is associated with general reactivity to negative emotion, or more specifically to sadness, has not received sufficient attention. The current study examines the association between depressive rumination and stress reactivity in response to a mild laboratory stressor in school-aged children. A diverse sample of 9

SADS-CoV nsp5 Inhibits Interferon Production by Targeting Kinase IKKε.

Swine acute diarrhea syndrome coronavirus (SADS-CoV), initially identified in China in February 2017, severely impacts the swine industry by causing lethal watery diarrhea in neonatal piglets. Understanding the molecular mechanism employed by SADS-CoV to evade the host's immune defenses is of utmost importance. In this study, using the porcine ileum epithelial cell line IPI-FX as an in vitro model, we investigated the highly pathogenic SADS-CoV GDS04 strain and its nonstructural protein 5 (nsp5) for their roles in inhibiting interferon-beta (IFN-β) production. Our findings indicated that GDS04

Recombinant SADS-CoV as a vector for porcine epidemic diarrhea vaccine development.

INTRODUCTION: Swine acute diarrhea syndrome coronavirus (SADS-CoV) is an emerging porcine enteric coronavirus that can cause diarrhea in piglets younger than 5 days of age. However, infection of pigs older than 5 days of age does not usually result in obvious clinical symptoms. This relative intrinsic safety in older animals prompted us to investigate the potential of SADS-CoV as a viral vector for porcine diarrhea virus vaccines. METHODS: We utilized Gibson assembly to clone the SADS-CoV sequence into an artificial bacterial chromosome (BAC) vector. Further manipulation was carried out by re

White matter correlates of hemi-face dominance in happy and sad expression.

The neural underpinnings of human emotional expression are thought to be unevenly distributed among the two brain hemispheres. However, little is known on the anatomy supporting this claim, particularly in the cerebral white matter. Here, we explored the relationship between hemi-face dominance in emotional expression and cerebral white matter asymmetries in 33 healthy participants. Measures of emotional expression were derived from pictures of the participant's faces in a 'happy smiling' and a 'sad frowning' conditions. Chimeric faces were constructed by mirroring right and left hemi-faces, a

BACKGROUND: Most of the studies on peripheral artery disease (PAD) focused on above-the-ankle artery disease, while less is known about foot artery disease. We hypothesize a scenario were two different diseases can be present in PAD patients, big artery disease (BAD) and small artery disease (SAD), overlapping at the foot level; the aim of this study is to evaluate their prevalence and their correlation with risk factors and critical limb ischemia (CLI) in a large cohort of patients with symptomatic PAD. Social anxiety across ethnicity: a confirmatory factor analysis of the FNE and SAD.

Previous research has established that social anxiety occurs at different rates in African American and European American populations (Grant et al., 2005), while psychometric investigations of widely used measures of psychopathology show differences in factor structure based on ethnic background (Carter, Miller, Sbrocco, Suchday, & Lewis, 1999; Chapman, Williams, Mast, & Woodruff-Borden, 2009). The current study examined response characteristics of 1276 African American and European American undergraduates completing the Fear of Negative Evaluation and Social Avoidance and Distress Scales (Wat

What is this thing called "SAD"? A critique of the concept of Seasonal Affective Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is supposed to be caused by lack of daylight in winter. Yet the population of Northern Norway, living without sun for two winter months, does not spontaneously complain about depression during the dark period. AIMS: To summarize research bearing upon the validity of the concept of SAD. METHOD: Review of relevant literature concerning the epidemiology of SAD and the questionnaire developed to measure it in general populations, the Seasonal Pattern Assessment Questionnaire (SPAQ). RESULTS: Large population studies from northern Norway do not point

Mercury-induced crystallization and SAD phasing of the human Fe65-PTB1 domain.

Fe65 is a three-domain neuronal adaptor protein involved in brain development and amyloid precursor protein (APP) signalling. The phosphotyrosine-binding domain 1 (PTB1) of human Fe65 has been cloned, overexpressed, purified and crystallized using the hanging-drop vapour-diffusion method. Native crystals belong to the space group R3 and diffract to 2.6 A resolution. This crystal form suffered from high thermal B factors and pseudo-symmetry, resulting in a bisection of the c axis. Co-crystallization with a mercury compound under similar conditions induced an orthorhombic crystal form in the spa

Towards a transgenic mouse model of sickle cell disease: hemoglobin SAD.

In order to obtain a transgenic mouse model of sickle cell disease, we have synthesized a novel human beta-globin gene, beta SAD, designed to increase the polymerization of the transgenic human hemoglobin S (Hb S) in vivo. beta SAD (beta S-Antilles-D Punjab) includes the beta 6Val substitution of the beta S chain, as well as two other mutations, Antilles (beta 23Ile) and D Punjab (beta 121Gln) each of which promotes the polymerization of Hb S in human. The beta SAD gene and the human alpha 2-globin gene, each linked to the beta-globin locus control region (LCR) were co-introduced into the mous

Phototherapy in subsyndromal seasonal affective disorder (S-SAD) and "diagnosed" controls.

Antidepressant and energizing effects of bright light exposure have been widely reported to occur in patients with seasonal affective disorder (SAD). In order to evaluate whether other segments of the population might also benefit from this treatment, we studied 20 normal individuals with mild SAD-like symptoms (subsyndromal SAD, S-SAD) and 20 with no reported seasonal difficulties (non-S-SAD). Whereas S-SAD individuals benefited from phototherapy, non-S-SAD normals did not. This finding raises the questions of whether a history of seasonal problems might be a marker of vulnerability to affect

Facial emotion recognition of sadness relates to superior parietal gray matter volume in mild cognitive impairment.

Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is associated with early, regionally selective neurodegenerative changes that may affect socioemotional functioning before atrophy becomes widespread. This study examined whether structural brain alterations in MCI relate to facial emotion recognition performance. Sixty adults (30 MCI, 30 healthy controls), aged 50-86 years, completed neuropsychological testing, the Facial emotion composite Task, and structural MRI. Whole-brain voxel-based morphometry revealed no significant gray matter volume differences between groups. However, targeted region-of-interest ROI

Mother- and Father-Child Reminiscing About Past Events Involving Pain, Fear, and Sadness: Observational Cohort Study.

OBJECTIVE: Pain in childhood is prevalent and is associated with fear, particularly in the context of injuries or procedural pain, and negative emotions (e.g., sadness). Pain and fear share a bidirectional relationship, wherein fear exacerbates the experience of pain and pain increases subsequent anticipatory fear. The existing research has focused primarily on children's immediate experience of pain and fear. Research on how children remember or talk about past painful, fearful, or sad events is lacking. Parent-child reminiscing about past pain has been demonstrated to differ from reminiscing
