OBJECTIVES: This study integrated the framework of the behavioral affective associations model with dual process theories to investigate whether feelings about condoms operate at both implicit and explicit levels to influence condom use. We then tested whether 2 factors related to the perceived controllability of condom use (perceived behavioral control and past experience losing control in the heat of the moment) moderated the reliance on implicit versus explicit affect.
METHOD: Sexually active young adults (N = 54) completed measures of implicit and explicit affect surrounding condoms, perc

Behavioral processes underlying sexual behavior are important for understanding normal human functioning and risk behavior leading to sexually transmitted infections (STIs). This systematic review examines delay and probability discounting in human sexual behavior through synthesis of 50 peer-reviewed, original research articles. Sixteen studies focusing exclusively on monetary delay discounting found small effect size positive correlations with sexual risk behaviors. Eleven studies examined delay or probability discounting of sexual behavior itself using tasks that varied duration, frequency,

BACKGROUND: Methamphetamine use is a known predictor of riskier sexual behaviors, which can have important public health implications (e.g., HIV-transmission risk). Loneliness also is associated with riskier sexual behaviors, though the relationship between loneliness and beliefs and/or intentions to practice safer sex has not been examined among people dependent on methamphetamine.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Individuals who met DSM-IV criteria for lifetime methamphetamine dependence and current (≤ 18-months) methamphetamine abuse or dependence (METH+ n = 56) were compared to those without severi

BACKGROUND: In response to the high burden of disease among sex workers and their position as a population heavily affected by the HIV epidemic, there has been a growing body of literature investigating the prevalence and risk factors associated with HIV risk among sex workers. To contextualize and summarize the existing research evidence base, a systematic review was conducted to synthesize the epidemiological literature on sex workers in Uganda.
METHODS: Database selection and search strategy development followed the Cochrane Collaboration's standards for conducting systematic review search

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: Structural interventions have the capacity to improve the outcomes of HIV/AIDS interventions by changing the social, economic, political or environmental factors that determine risk and vulnerability. Marginalized groups face disproportionate barriers to health, and sex workers are among those at highest risk of HIV in India. Evidence in India and globally has shown that sex workers face violence in many forms ranging from verbal, psychological and emotional abuse to economic extortion, physical and sexual violence and this is directly linked to lower levels of condom

BACKGROUND: The role of business employees and community members in the HIV risk environment of female sex workers (FSW) is underexplored, despite sex work often located in commercial and residential urban areas. We explored the effect of negative interactions between business employees and community members on inconsistent condom use with clients of female sex workers.
METHODS: This study uses baseline data from the EMERALD study, a community empowerment intervention with FSW. We recruited a sample of 361 FSW in Baltimore, Maryland using targeted sampling techniques in ten zones characterize

Female sex workers (FSWs) often engage in concurrent partnerships, meaning they have multiple sexual relationships at the same time. The objective of this study was to investigate sexual concurrency and its associations with condom use and syphilitic infections among FSWs over age 35. Respondent-driven sampling was used to recruit 1,245 FSWs in Nanning, Hefei, and Qingdao, China. FSWs were asked to report whether they had concurrent partners in the past six months. Concurrency was defined as engagement in sex with commercial clients and (1) husbands and boyfriends (n = 167); (2) husbands only

In many European and other high-income, Western countries, condom use has been decreasing among youth. A variety of promotional strategies to increase condom use exists. Our systematic review aimed to identify effective elements in interventions aimed at increasing condom use in youth. We searched databases (2010-2021) for intervention studies promoting condom use among youth in Western, high-income countries. The primary outcome was condom use; the secondary outcome was sexually transmitted infection (STI) diagnoses. Effectiveness per intervention was defined based on the percentage of compar

The visual archive of AIDS and fetish activism is a rich resource for studying interlinkages between art and science, activism and public health, politics and medicine, pleasure and sexual health prevention. This article explores AIDS and fetish activism imagery from the first two decades of the Norwegian AIDS crisis. Interrogating the materiality and visual context of images - photographs, posters, flyers, and safer sex instructions - it maps out visualization practices in leather, BDSM and AIDS activism. AIDS and fetish imagery made some bodies, pleasures, and political goals visible - and r

Women's ability to negotiate for safer sex has been found to be dependent on their household decision making power. However, there is paucity of studies investigating the association between women's household decision making power and safer sex negotiation in Ghana. Thus, we examined the association between women's household decision making autonomy and safer sex negotiation among Ghanaian women in sexual unions using the 2014 Ghana's Demographic and Health Survey. Descriptive statistics, Chi-square test, and multivariable logistic regression models were performed. Statistical significance was

For the first time in 10 years, there has been a fall in the number of diagnoses of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in England; new diagnoses fell by 1%. Infection rates continue to grow among gay men and other men who have sex with men. Men who have sex with men are at more risk of developing an STI than other men in the population. This article considers the overall trends and diagnoses of STIs in England. A focus in particular on men who have sex with men is provided with an emphasis on lymphogranuloma venereum. Data is presented in order to provide the nurse with an overview of tren

This investigation examined sexual behaviors among heterosexual persons living with HIV (PLHIV) in India. Study participants (mostly married) were interviewed during August to November 2006 in five Indian states using a quantitative survey (n = 100 men and 100 women), eight focus groups (n = 58 participants), and in-depth interviews (n = 31). One third of men and one fourth of women reported inconsistent condom use with regular sexual partners. Facilitators of condom use with regular partners included a feeling of personal responsibility to protect the health of the partner, desire to prevent

BACKGROUND: The role of partner types in modifying HIV seroconversion risk among men who have sex with men (MSM) is complex. We sought to understand the role of regular sexual partners and risky sexual behavior in contributing to incident HIV infection among MSM.
METHODS: From July 2011 to August 2017, we recruited HIV-negative men who reported having anal or oral homosexual encounters in the past 6 months and they were followed up every 3 months for 2 visits. We collected sociodemographic and behavioral characteristics by a self-administrated questionnaire. HIV status was confirmed by a sequ

Although considerable progress in the treatment of patients with AIDS has been achieved over the recent years, AIDS remains a non-curative disease. Therefore the prevention of new infections with HIV is an important goal for medicine and public health. However, during recent years the number of new HIV-infections in young gay men increased. New empirical data from the U.S. and the U.K. suggest that the traditional prevention methods fail to reach young gay men in Western countries who become HIV-infected by unsafe sex within intimate relationships. The paper discusses these problems from the p

BACKGROUND: Prostate-specific antigen (PSA), a biomarker of vaginal semen exposure, is less susceptible to bias than self-reported condom use behaviors. We examined the agreement of self-reported recent condomless sex (RCS) within couples and how these reports related to PSA detection.
METHODS: We analyzed data from a study conducted in Vietnam, 2017 to 2020, of 500 different-sex couples using condoms and no other contraceptive method to prevent pregnancy for 6 months. We assessed enrollment and 6-month data from vaginal swabs and questionnaires from both partners. We calculated Prevalence-Ad

Youth sex and relationship education programs aim to improve adolescent well-being by changing their knowledge, beliefs, and attitudes regarding sex and their health. However, there is a gap in existing research linking these cognitive targets to relevant behaviors, and a particular dearth of data on links with sexual behaviors. The current study tested longitudinal links between cognitive factors related to sex (attitudes about sex, normative beliefs, risk-avoidant intentions, and confidence in refusal skills) and outcomes of sexual behaviors (recent sexual encounters, number of sexual partne
