We provide the first report of Acanthocephala ( Prosthenorchis elegans) in Mexican non-human primates. There has been no known treatment against this parasite except for surgical removal, and this has been relatively ineffective because of the small juveniles. We report the presence of P. elegans in a captive breeding colony of squirrel monkeys ( Saimiri sciureus) in Mexico, and we describe a successful treatment protocol. Treatment involved 2 steps: oral administration of the drugs loperamide chlorhydrate (0.5 mg/0.9 kg/3 days) and niclosamide (0.2 mg/0.9 kg/3 days) followed by surgical remov

The characterization of T cell immunodeficiencies could in part be supported by using stable cell lines in which biochemical and molecular studies of the defect could be carried out thereby omitting frequent bleeding of patients. First attempts to obtain such cell lines included HTLV-I transformation and exogenous IL-2 administration, but both models have important disadvantages. Recently, a virus isolated from the squirrel monkey, Herpes virus saimiri (HVS), has been reported to have the ability to transform T cells. A stable IL-2-dependent HVS-transformed T cell line from a CD3 gamma deficie

The cortical connections of two vestibular fields [parieto-insular vestibular cortex (PIVC) and area 3aV] were studied in the squirrel monkey (Saimiri sciureus) by means of retrograde tracer techniques. Small iontophoretic or pressure injections of horseradish peroxidase (HRP), wheat-germ-HRP, Nuclear Yellow, and Fast Blue were administered to the cytoarchitectonic areas Ri (PIVC), 3aV, the parieto-temporal association area T3, the granular insula (Ig), and the rostral part of area 7 (7ant). The injection sites were physiologically characterized by means of microelectrode recordings and vestib

Twenty Saimiri sciureus boliviensis monkeys from Bolivia were inoculated intravenously with sporozoites of the Salvador I strain of Plasmodium vivax. All animals were splenectomized 7 days after inoculation. Inoculation of 100,000 sporozoites resulted in prepatent periods averaging 16.6 days; all monkeys developed high-level parasitemias with an average maximum of 103,000 per mm3. Inoculation of 10,000 sporozoites resulted in average prepatent periods of 19.4 days; one of the resulting infections produced a transient low-level parasitemia. Of 5 monkeys inoculated with 1,000 sporozoites, 4 had

Infection of owl monkeys with Herpesvirus saimiri (HVS) results in disease courses ranging from chronic infections to fatal cancers. Malignant disease manifestations include the appearance of transformed T-cells, suppressor T-cells, and virus-carrying cells in the peripheral circulation. The reasons for the variability in disease course remain unknown. This study examined natural killer (NK) functions in relation to disease manifestations following HVS infection. The results from lymphocyte fractionation studies indicated that the owl monkey NK cell was of T-cell lineage and had receptors for

Dental calculus and associated periodontal disease are serious clinical problems in captive squirrel monkeys. Calculus begins to appear as early as 2 years of age, with subsequent development of periodontal disease, dental abscessation, tooth loss and other sequelae. When used as a feed additive, sodium hexametaphosphate (HMP) retards the growth of calculus on previously cleaned teeth in rhesus monkeys, lemurs, and other species. We wanted to determine whether HMP would reduce dental calculus in squirrel monkeys (Saimiri spp.) whose teeth had not been pre-cleaned. The study animals were divide

Squirrel monkeys display an interest in novel places, habituate to new situations, and spend most of their daily activity in the wild in large groups engaging in feeding behaviors over a broad area. Captivity limits these behaviors and consequently may disrupt normal social organizations. In captivity, squirrel monkeys may exhibit stereotypical behaviors that are believed to indicate decreased psychologic well-being. When a monkey's behavior can be made to approach that seen in the wild, and stereotypical behaviors are minimal, it is assumed that psychologic well-being is adequate. Environment

Acquired cardiovascular diseases are recognized as a major age-related cause of morbidity and mortality in captive squirrel monkeys (Saimiri spp.). An 11-year-old intact male black-capped squirrel monkey (Saimiri boliviensis boliviensis) was presented following a syncopal episode associated with respiratory distress, abdominal distension, and peripheral edema. Upon presentation, the animal appeared thin and debilitated. Physical examination revealed respiratory distress with paradoxical breathing, abdominal distension, peripheral edema of the hind limbs, and hypothermia. Thoracic auscultation

Efficiency of lymphoma induction by herpesvirus saimiri (HVS) isolates correlates with the genetically defined viral subgroups A, B, and C. To compare subgroup-specific effects, highly susceptible tamarins were infected with HVS strain A-11, B-SMHI, or C-488. All animals developed T-cell lymphomas indistinguishable with respect to clinical, pathological, and virological parameters. Ex vivo T-cell lines were established readily from the HVS C-488 animal, less efficiently in the presence of HVS A-11, and from only a single HVS B-SMHI sample. These cultivated cells revealed strain-specific bioche

Human T cells are transformed in vitro to stable growth after infection with herpesvirus saimiri subgroup C strain C488, and they retain their antigen-specific reactivity and other important functional features of mature activated T lymphocytes. The virus persists as nonintegrating episomes in human T cells under restricted viral gene expression and without production of virus particles. This study analyzes the behavior of herpesvirus-transformed autologous T cells after reinfusion into the donor under close-to-human experimental conditions. T cells of 5 macaque monkeys were transformed to sta

The female squirrel monkey, Saimiri boliviensis, a New World monkey, has 10-day estrous cycles during the annual breeding season. Measurements of serum estradiol (E) concentrations in females housed with males in breeding pens revealed markedly higher levels than previously reported. Additionally, females in breeding pens appeared to have two distinct patterns of serum E peaks relative to the LH surge. Serum estrogen peaks averaging 5-fold greater than levels on the preceding day were observed on the same day as the LH surge, whereas other females had only a small E rise on the day of the LH s

Francisella tularensis, a small Gram-negative facultative intracellular bacterium, is the causative agent of tularaemia, a severe zoonotic disease transmitted to humans mostly by vectors such as ticks, flies and mosquitoes. The disease is endemic in many parts of the northern hemisphere. Among animals, the most affected species belong to rodents and lagomorphs, in particular hares. However, in the recent years, many cases of tularaemia among small monkeys in zoos were reported. We have developed a real-time PCR that allows to quantify F. tularensis in tissue samples. Using this method, we iden

Accidental B virus (Herpesvirus simiae) infection of human beings working with macaques is frequently fatal. However, the pathogenic potential of other similar simian alphaherpesviruses, such as the squirrel monkey virus Herpesvirus saimiri (HVS1), is virtually unknown. As part of an effort to develop a murine model for infections with these agents, Balb/c mice were inoculated intramuscularly in the left hindlimb with 10 to 10(6) plaque forming units (PFU) of HVS1. After observation for clinical signs of infection for 21 days, mice were killed and specimens collected for serology and histopath

In the genetic disorder ataxia telangiectasia (AT), humoral (B) and cellular (T) immunological abnormalities are frequently observed. As a consequence, AT patients are predisposed to life-threatening sinopulmonary infections. The pathogenic mechanisms remain unknown, but a role for ATM in signal transduction from membrane receptors has been proposed. We have explored the effects of a defective ATMgene on isolated human T-lineage cells from 13 AT patients with proven T cell dysfunction by transforming their CD4(+) and CD8(+) T lymphocytes with Herpesvirus saimiri, and analyzing their signaling

Cellular and humoral immune responses were studied in squirrel monkeys after primary and challenge infection with a Khartoum strain (WR 378) of Leishmania donovani. Each of 7 squirrel monkeys, Saimiri sciureus, was inoculated intravenously with 5 X 10(7) amastigotes/kg body weight, and one other monkey (control) was inoculated with uninfected hamster spleen homogenate. Five infected monkeys recovered from visceral leishmaniasis and two infected monkeys died. Three of the five squirrel monkeys which recovered from the primary infection demonstrated acquired resistance when challenged with an in

Non-human primates are potential hosts for helminths of various phyla, and the presence of these parasites can cause changes in organ morphology and functionality. In this study, we present the alterations induced by the presence of acanthocephalan parasites in the small intestine of a snub-nosed monkey that died in the Bosque Rodrigues Alves, municipality of Belém, Pará state, Brazil. Ten specimens of Saimiri sciureus had their intestines analyzed and the parasites recovered were cleaned, quantified, fixed and observed using light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy, and fragments of

Toxoplasmosis is commonly asymptomatic; however, it can be a fatal multisystemic disease in some animal species, such as New World monkeys. An outbreak of acute fatal toxoplasmosis was reported in a colony of black-capped squirrel monkeys (Saimiri boliviensis) from the zoo of La Plata, Argentina. Post-mortem examination of two monkeys revealed macroscopical and microscopical lesions compatible with acute toxoplasmosis. The presence of Toxoplasma gondii was confirmed by immunohistochemistry on monkey tissues, bioassay in mice and PCR using the specific primers B22-B23. By PCR-RFLP analysis, T.
