Comparison of the protoscolocidal effectiveness of hypertonic saline, povidone-iodine and albendazole solutions in an experimental lung hydatid cyst model.

Secondary hydatidosis is an important problem encountered during the surgical treatment of hydatid cysts. This study describes an experimental model of secondary hydatidosis by cyst inoculation, used to explore whether simultaneous inoculation of protoscolocidal agents could prevent secondary hydatidosis. Fertile cyst fluid was injected into the pleural space of rabbits alone (group 1, n = 8), and in combination with 2% albendazole solution (group 2, n = 8), 20% hypertonic saline (group 3, n = 8) or 10% povidone-iodine (group 4, n = 8). Effects of a combination hemoglobin based oxygen carrier-hypertonic saline solution on oxygen transport in the treatment of traumatic shock.

BACKGROUND: Logistics complicate fluid resuscitation of traumatic shock on the battlefield. Traumatic shock can result in oxygen debt (O(2)D) accumulation that is fatal. However, the ability of fluid strategies to repay O(2)D are not commonly reported. This pilot study examined various resuscitation fluids, including a combination of PEGylated bovine hemoglobin and hypertonic saline (AfterShock™) on their ability to repay O(2)D in traumatic shock. METHODS: 41 anesthetized swine underwent hemorrhage to an O(2)D of 80 mL/kg. Animals received one of the following: 500 mL whole blood, 500 mL Afte

High-dose furosemide and small-volume hypertonic saline solution infusion for the treatment of leg edema in advanced cancer patients.

Peripheral edema is a common feature in populations with advanced cancer, although it is seldom recognized. Diuretics are commonly employed and may show some benefit, but there are insufficient clinical trial data to draw useful conclusions about their clinical use. The aim of this prospective study was to evaluate the efficacy and tolerability of high-dose furosemide and small-volume hypertonic saline solution infusion in reducing leg edema in patients with advanced cancer treated unsuccessfully with diuretics. A prospective study was performed in a consecutive sample of 24 patients admitted

Effect of continuous infusion of hypertonic saline solution on survival of patients with brain injury: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: The objective was to determine the effects of continuous infusion of hypertonic saline solutions on outcomes of patients with brain injury. METHODS: Preferred Reported Items for Systemic Reviews and Meta-Analysis guidelines were followed. We searched the MEDLINE and COCHRANE clinical trials register (through December 2021) and reference lists of articles. We included all clinical trials conducted in brain-injured patients hospitalized in intensive care units evaluating continuous infusion of hypertonic saline solution (osmolarity above 308 mOsm/L). Two reviewers extracted data tha

Comparison of equivolume, equiosmolar solutions of mannitol and hypertonic saline with or without furosemide on brain water content in normal rats.

BACKGROUND: Mannitol and hypertonic saline (HS) are used by clinicians to reduce brain water and intracranial pressure and have been evaluated in a variety of experimental and clinical protocols. Administering equivolume, equiosmolar solutions in healthy animals could help produce fundamental data on water translocation in uninjured tissue. Furthermore, the role of furosemide as an adjunct to osmotherapy remains unclear. METHODS: Two hundred twenty isoflurane-anesthetized rats were assigned randomly to receive equivolume normal saline, 4.2% HS (1,368 mOsm/L 25% mannitol (1,375 mOsm/L), normal

Tissue oxygen monitoring during hemorrhagic shock and resuscitation: a comparison of lactated Ringer's solution, hypertonic saline dextran, and HBOC-201.

BACKGROUND: The ideal resuscitation fluid for the trauma patient would be readily available to prehospital personnel, universally compatible, effective when given in small volumes, and capable of reversing tissue hypoxia in critical organ beds. Recently developed hemoglobin-based oxygen-carrying solutions possess many of these properties, but their ability to restore tissue oxygen after hemorrhagic shock has not been established. We postulated that a small-volume resuscitation with HBOC-201 (Biopure) would be more effective than either lactated Ringer's (LR) solution or hypertonic saline dextr

Hypertonic saline solution evokes cardiovascular recovery in hemorrhagic rats dependent on GABA A and β-adrenergic transmission in the subfornical organ.

BACKGROUND: Studies have reported the use of a hypertonic saline solution (HSS) for the treatment of hypotensive hemorrhage (HH). Despite the established role of central mechanisms in the cardiovascular recovery induced by HSS during HH, the involvement of the Subfornical Organ (SFO) in these responses remains to be elucidated. The present study evaluated the role of SFO and adrenergic neurotransmission in the nucleus in the cardiovascular responses to HSS infusion in hemorrhagic rats. METHODS: Mean arterial pressure (MAP), heart rate (HR), and aortic vascular resistance (AVR) were recorded i

Troponin I release after intravenous treatment with high furosemide doses plus hypertonic saline solution in decompensated heart failure trial (Tra-HSS-Fur).

BACKGROUND: High values of cardiac troponin in acute decompensated congestive heart failure (ADHF) identify patients at higher risk and worsened prognosis. A cardiac troponin increase during therapy indicates the need for more appropriate intervention, aimed at compensating cardiac disease and effectively minimizing myocardial wall stress and subsequent cytolysis. This study evaluated the effects of an intravenous high dose of furosemide with (group A) or without small volume hypertonic saline solution (HSS) (group B) on myocardial cytolysis in patients with ADHF. METHODS: A total of 248 cons

Comparison of mannitol and hypertonic saline solution for the treatment of suspected brain herniation during prehospital management of traumatic brain injury patients.

BACKGROUND AND IMPORTANCE: Occurrence of mydriasis during the prehospital management of traumatic brain injury (TBI) may suggest severe intracranial hypertension (ICH) subsequent to brain herniation. The initiation of hyperosmolar therapy to reduce ICH and brain herniation is recommended. Whether mannitol or hypertonic saline solution (HSS) should be preferred is unknown. OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study is to assess whether HSS, compared with mannitol, is associated with improved survival in adult trauma patients with TBI and mydriasis. DESIGN/SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: A retrospectiv

Efficacy and Safety of Hypertonic Saline Solution With Loop Diuretics in Patients With Acute Heart Failure: A Protocol for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Intravenous loop diuretics are the cornerstone of acute heart failure treatment. Diuretic resistance limits the efficacy and reduces the effectiveness of decongestion, which is associated with increased mortality in AHF patients. We aim to investigate the effect of adding hypertonic saline solution (HSS) to intravenous loop diuretics in treating AHF. METHOD: This protocol for a systematic review is conducted with guidance from the Cochrane Handbook and the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis Protocols. We will systematically review randomised clinica

Effect of blood transfusion in combination with Dextran-40 and hypertonic saline solution on cardiopulmonary haemodynamics of endotoxin (lipopolysaccharide) shock in buffalo calves.

The intravenous (i.v.) infusion of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) of E. coli endotoxin in buffalo calves (n = 15) at 5 microg/kg bw per h for 3 h caused a significant (p<0.05) fall in plasma volume, blood volume, haematocrit haemoglobin, and systolic, diastolic and pulse pressure, mean arterial pressure and central venous pressure (CVP), with a marked rise in respiration. Treatment with a combination of i.v. infusion of 7.2% hypertonic saline solution, Plasmex-D-40 (Dextran-40) and blood successfully alleviated hypovolaemia, and raised systolic, diastolic and pulse pressure, mean arterial pressure a
