An effective combined vaccine against vibriosis and typical and atypical furunculosis in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar).

This study evaluated the safety and efficacy of a novel trivalent inactivated vaccine targeting domestic strains of Vibrio anguillarum (VA), Aeromonas salmonicida subsp. salmonicida (ASS), and A. salmonicida subsp. masoucida (ASM) in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar). While furunculosis and vibriosis pose significant threats to the Korean aquaculture industry, the inclusion of local ASM strains in polyvalent vaccines remains rare. Three vaccine formulations-Mix1, Mix2, and Mix3-with decreasing antigen concentrations were evaluated. Comprehensive safety assessments showed that no adverse effects we

Effects of a temperature rise on melatonin and thyroid hormones during smoltification of Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar.

Smoltification prepares juvenile Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) for downstream migration. Dramatic changes characterize this crucial event in the salmon's life cycle, including increased gill Na+/K+-ATPase activity (NKA) and plasma hormone levels. The triggering of smoltification relies on photoperiod and is modulated by temperature. Both provide reliable information, to which fish have adapted for thousands of years, that allows deciphering daily and calendar time. Here we studied the impact of different photoperiod (natural, sustained winter solstice) and temperature (natural, ~ + 4° C) combi

The CatSper channel is present and plays a key role in sperm motility of the Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar).

Among all the Ca2+ channels, CatSper channels have been one of the most studied in sperm of different species due to their demonstrated role in the fertilization process. In fish sperm, the calcium channel plays a key role in sperm activation. However, the functionality of the CatSper channels has not been studied in any of the fish species. For the first time, we studied the relationship of the CatSper channel with sperm motility in a fish, using Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) as the model. The results of our study showed that the CatSper channel in Salmo salar has chemical-physical characteri

Sea lice levels on wild Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., returning to the coast of Ireland.

The sea lice population structure, prevalence and intensity of Lepeophtheirus salmonis have been studied over a period extending from 2004 to 2011. Infestation data were collected from the interceptor drift net fishery from 2004 until it was closed in 2006. From 2010, data were collected from the inshore draft net fishery. In all, 34 samples from the drift and draft net fisheries have been analysed to date. Prevalence of infestation with L. salmonis regularly approached 100% in samples of hosts recovered from the offshore drift net fishery. Abundance was variable both within and between years

The effect of light on the settlement of the salmon louse, Lepeophtheirus salmonis, on Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L.

The salmon louse, Lepeophtheirus salmonis, is an ectoparasitic copepod that infests both wild and farmed salmonid fish. Salmon lice are a major disease problem in the farming of Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., and the possibility of salmon lice playing a role in the decline of wild anadromous stocks has also been raised. Lepeophtheirus salmonis can detect a range of stimuli (pressure/moving water, chemicals and light) in the external environment. However, the response thresholds to various stimuli, and the spatial and temporal scales over which they operate in the context of host location, ar

A morphological study of the gross and light microscopic lesions of infectious anaemia in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar).

Infectious anaemia in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) was studied by recording gross and light microscopic changes, and the development of lesions was studied in relation to haematocrit values. Gross lesions were characterised by ascites formation, congestion and enlargement of liver and spleen, congestion of the foregut and petechiae in the peritoneum. Histologically, lesions were demonstrated in the liver, being characterised by congestion in early stages (that is, haematocrit values around 25), dilatation of the sinusoids, and in later stages (haematocrit values 25 to 15) formation of blood-f

Evaluation of sample preparation methods for NMR-based metabolomics of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) ovarian fluid.

Average embryo survival in farmed Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) has declined sharply from about 80% to below 50% in North America over the past two decades. The underlying causes remain unclear, and no effective solutions currently exist for this problem, posing a major challenge to the production of a leading aquaculture species in the USA. Traditional selective breeding programs typically assign "breeding values" to broodstock fish based on growth-related traits; however, incorporating reproductive success traits (e.g., embryo hatch rates, metabolic biomarkers) into breeding value calculatio

Elevated Water CO2 Can Prevent Dietary-Induced Osteomalacia in Post-Smolt Atlantic Salmon (Salmo salar, L.).

Expansion of land-based systems in fish farms elevate the content of metabolic carbon dioxide (CO2) in the water. High CO2 is suggested to increase the bone mineral content in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar, L.). Conversely, low dietary phosphorus (P) halts bone mineralization. This study examines if high CO2 can counteract reduced bone mineralization imposed by low dietary P intake. Atlantic salmon post-seawater transfer (initial weight 207.03 g) were fed diets containing 6.3 g/kg (0.5P), 9.0 g/kg (1P), or 26.8 g/kg (3P) total P for 13 weeks. Atlantic salmon from all dietary P groups were reare

Developmental changes in gene expression and gonad morphology during sex differentiation in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar).

The Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) is a globally important species for its value in fisheries and aquaculture, and as a research model. In order to characterise aspects of sex differentiation at the morphological and mRNA level in this species, the present study examined developmental changes in gonad morphology and gene expression in males and females between 0 and 79 days post hatch (dph). Morphological differentiation of the ovary (indicated by the formation of germ cell cysts) became apparent from 52 dph. By 79 dph, ovarian phenotype was evident in 100% of genotypic females. Testes remained

Estimating cage-level mortality distributions following different delousing treatments of Atlantic salmon (salmo salar) in Norway.

This retrospective descriptive study estimates cage-level mortality distributions after six immediate delousing methods: thermal, mechanical, hydrogen peroxide, medicinal, freshwater and combination of medicinal treatments. We investigated mortality patterns associated with 4 644 delousing treatment of 1 837 cohorts of farmed Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) stocked in sea along the Norwegian coast between 2014 and 2017. The mortality is expressed as mortality rates. We found distributions of delta mortality rate within 1, 7 and 14 days after all six delousing treatments, using mortality rate wit

Fin Erosion of Salmo salar (Linnaeus 1758) Infested with the Parasite Caligus rogercresseyi (Boxshall & Bravo 2000).

Fin condition is a simple indicator of fish welfare, which anticipates detrimental effects on fish in aquaculture systems. This study evaluated the fin condition of Salmo salar at different abundances of the parasite Caligus rogercresseyi. Fish were exposed to infestation with copepodids and the cohort was allowed to develop to the adult stage. The relative fin index was measured. Significant differences between infested and control fish for both pectoral and anal fins were observed. Moreover, there were significant negative relationships between fin condition and parasite abundances for pecto

Tolerance and dose-response assessment of subchronic dietary ethoxyquin exposure in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.).

Ethoxyquin (EQ; 6-Ethoxy-2,2,4-trimethyl-1,2-dihydroquinoline) has been used as an antioxidant in feed components for pets, livestock and aquaculture. However, possible risks of EQ used in aquafeed for fish health have not yet been characterized. The present study investigated the toxicity and dose-response of subchronic dietary EQ exposure at doses ranging from 41 to 9666 mg EQ/kg feed in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.). Feed at concentrations higher than 1173 mg EQ/kg were rejected by the fish, resulting in reduced feed intake and growth performance. No mortality was observed in fish expose

Infection dynamics and tissue tropism of Parvicapsula pseudobranchicola (Myxozoa: Myxosporea) in farmed Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar).

BACKGROUND: The myxosporean parasite Parvicapsula pseudobranchicola commonly infects farmed Atlantic salmon in northern Norway. Heavy infections are associated with pseudobranch lesions, runting and mortality in the salmon populations. The life-cycle of the parasite is unknown, preventing controlled challenge experiments. The infection dynamics, duration of sporogony, tissue tropism and ability to develop immunity to the parasite in farmed Atlantic salmon is poorly known. We conducted a field experiment, aiming at examining these aspects. METHODS: Infections in a group of Atlantic salmon were

Stress-induced expression of protein disulfide isomerase associated 3 (PDIA3) in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.).

In mammals, disulfide isomerase associated 3, PDIA3, is a member of the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress proteins, which can be induced by oxidative stress; however, its role in relation to stress regulation is still unknown in fish. Here, we report the cloning of a coding region of PDIA3 from the Atlantic salmon. PDIA3 mRNA expression was evaluated in the liver of Atlantic salmon exposed to environmental hyperoxia stress and toxic perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) exposure stress. The PDIA3 sequence contained two PDI-typical thioredoxin active sites of WCGHC and shared approximately 70% ident

Infection Dynamics and Host Responses to Two IPNV Isolates in Liver of Atlantic Salmon (Salmo salar).

The infectious pancreatic necrosis virus (IPNV) used to be one of the largest loss factors in Atlantic salmon farming. Since 2009, marker-assisted selection for resistance to IPN, targeting a single major quantitative trait locus (QTL), has led to a ten-fold decrease in the number of IPN outbreaks in Norway. However, some IPN-related problems remain, due to isolates of the virus which seem to bypass the resistance mechanism of the QTL. We comparatively characterized a classical isolate affected by the IPN-QTL (cIPNV) and an isolate that circumvents the QTL-based protection (rIPNV). Using both

Endocrine and Transcriptome Changes Associated with Testicular Growth and Differentiation in Atlantic Salmon (Salmo salar L.).

Sexual maturation of Atlantic salmon males is marked by dramatic endocrine changes and rapid growth of the testes, resulting in an increase in the gonad somatic index (GSI). We examined the association of gonadal growth with serum sex steroids, as well as pituitary and testicular gene expression levels, which were assessed with a DNA oligonucleotide microarray. The testes transcriptome was stable in males with a GSI < 0.08% despite the large difference between the smallest and the largest gonads. Fish with a GSI ≥ 0.23% had 7-17 times higher serum levels of five male steroids and a 2-fold incr

The effect of different intensities of the ectoparasitic salmon lice (Lepeophtheirus salmonis) on Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar).

The effect of different intensities of the ectoparasitic salmon lice (Lepeophtheirus salmonis) on stress, growth and the expression of immune and wound healing transcripts in the skin of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) was investigated. Lice infection success and survival were similar at the chalimus and preadult stage in the low and high dose group, but infection success and survival were significantly lower in the high than in the low dose group at the adult stage. The expression of investigated transcripts was not correlated to lice intensities, but several of them were significantly differen

Effects of ploidy and salmonid alphavirus infection on the skin and gill microbiome of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar).

The microbial communities that live in symbiosis with the mucosal surfaces of animals provide the host with defense strategies against pathogens. These microbial communities are largely shaped by the environment and the host genetics. Triploid Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) are being considered for aquaculture as they are reproductively sterile and thus cannot contaminate the natural gene pool. It has not been previously investigated how the microbiome of triploid salmon compares to that of their diploid counterparts. In this study, we compare the steady-state skin and gill microbiome of both d

The effects of Lepeophtheirus salmonis infections on the stress response and immunological status of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar).

This study was conducted to determine the effects of a high level of infection of the parasitic copepod L. salmonis on the stress response and immunological status of Atlantic salmon. An initial low-level initial infection was carried out 14d prior to a second infection in which twice as many parasites were introduced. Plasma cortisol and prostaglandin E(2) (PGE(2)) levels were monitored concurrent to the expression of six immune-related genes over five sample times (9, 21, 26, 33 and 40days post initial infection, dpii). Temperature-dependent quality evolution of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar): Mechanistic insights into physicochemical and microbial dynamics.

Although conventional refrigeration is widely used for Atlantic salmon preservation, rapid quality deterioration limits its shelf life. With increasing consumer demand for fresh-like salmon products, ice-temperature and micro-freezing preservation techniques have gained attention. In this study, Atlantic salmon was stored for 10 days under refrigeration (4.0 °C), ice-temperature storage (-0.5 °C), and micro-freezing storage (-4.0 °C) to systematically evaluate quality evolution, water migration, and microbial community dynamics. The results demonstrated that salmon stored at -0.5 °C exhibited
