Non-typhoidal Salmonella (NTS), a major public health problem worldwide, frequently causes gastrointestinal infections and can develop asymptomatic carriage. Isolation of NTS in urine and urinary carriage, are extremely rare and their frequency increases in the presence of predisposing factors. In today’s world where the rates of quinolone-resistant Salmonella spp. are rapidly increasing, the implementation of the correct treatment protocol, especially in patients in the risk group, is the most fundamental step to prevent the development of carriage. In this case report, an human immunodeficie

Salmonella Enteritidis, the most prevalent serovar-causing human gastroenteritis, has been traditionally linked to poultry sources. Although antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is not common in this serovar, increasing levels of resistance to fluoroquinolones and ampicillin have been reported in the last few years. Here, 298 isolates retrieved from different sources (human, livestock, wildlife, food, and environment) and years (2002-2021) in Spain were analyzed to evaluate their diversity, the distribution of AMR-conferring genes (ARGs), and mutations and reconstruct the epidemiology of infection d

BACKGROUND: Salmonella, a bacterial genus of more than 2500 serotypes is considered as the most significant foodborne pathogen causing infections in humans and animals. Increased antimicrobial resistance and persistence of antimicrobial residues in food matrices warrants the need for alternative infection management strategies.
AIMS: The present study aimed to isolate and evaluate the lytic activity of bacteriophage against Salmonella.
METHODS: Twenty-eight Salmonella isolates obtained from the poultry sources were screened for antibiotic sensitivity. Poultry slaughterhouse wastewater was us

Salmonella enterica serovar Enteritidis (SE) is a public health concern and infected chickens serve as a reservoir that potentially transmits to humans through food. Although SE seldom causes systemic disease in chickens, virulent SE strains can colonize in intestines and lead a persistent infection of the liver. The liver is the primary organ for lipid metabolism in chickens and the site for production and assembly of main components in yolk. We performed a time-course experiment using LMH-2A cells that were infected with SE and co-incubated with β-oestradiol to evaluate if SE infection affec

Although bacteremia caused by non-typhoidal salmonella is frequently observed in immunocompromised hosts, it is rare to find this condition in healthy subjects. In this report, we present a case of bacteremia due to Salmonella enteritidis detected in a healthy man. A 59-year-old man was admitted to our hospital with a fifty-day history of fever on May 18, 1985. On admission, he showed no symptoms except high body temperature (38.8 degrees C). In the laboratory data, C-reactive protein was 3+, white- cell count was 9600, and erythrocyte sedimentation rate was 12 mm/h. Culture in blood and stool

Salmonella enterica serovar Enteritidis (SE) can colonise chicken ovaries and contaminate eggs, posing a global risk of human gastroenteritis, often linked to raw or undercooked eggs. Control options for SE outbreaks in Australia are limited; autogenous SE vaccines are commonly used, while live attenuated Salmonella Typhimurium (ST) vaccines are available. One such vaccine, has been registered in Australia since 1996. This study evaluated three vaccination programmes in laying hens: a live ST vaccine, an autogenous SE vaccine and a combination of both against challenge with an Australian SE is

Chickens were immunized orally with 10(9)cfu of the temperature-sensitive (T(s)) mutant E/1/3 of Salmonella enteritidis at 1, 2, 3 and 7 days of age. The animals were challenged with wild-type strains of Salmonella of different serotypes 7 or 14 days following immunization. Chickens receiving multiple oral doses of the vaccine strain showed no signs of disease. Immunized animals shed the vaccine strain for at least 2 weeks after the last inoculation; on the other hand, colonization by the attenuated mutant of internal organs such as spleen and liver was limited. Early exposure of the immunized

Salmonella enterica ssp. enterica serovars Enteritidis (SE) and Gallinarum (SG) cause different diseases in chickens. However, both are able to reach the blood stream where heterophils and monocytes are potentially able to phagocytose and kill the pathogens. Using an ex vivo chicken whole blood infection model, we compared the complex interactions of the differentially host-adapted SE and SG with immune cells in blood samples of two White Leghorn chicken lines showing different laying performance (WLA: high producer; R11: low producer). In order to examine the dynamic interaction between perip

Periprosthetic joint infections (PJIs) are severe complications following joint arthroplasty, commonly caused by Gram-positive bacteria, such as Staphylococcus aureus. Infections due to Gram-negative organisms like Salmonella enteritidis are exceedingly rare. In this study, we report a case of a 68-year-old male who developed a late-onset PJI caused by Salmonella enteritidis 10 years after primary total hip arthroplasty (THA). A two-stage revision arthroplasty with an interim antibiotic spacer was performed, followed by 6 weeks of intravenous antibiotic therapy. Three months postoperatively, t

Cardiovascular implantable electronic device (CIED) infections have high mortality and morbidity. CIED infections secondary to gram-negative pathogens are rare, and there are few data regarding their treatment. We report a case of a 60-year-old male who developed recurrent Salmonella enteritidis bacteremia leading to CIED infection and nonsusceptibility to ciprofloxacin.

BACKGROUND: Salmonella enterica serovar Enteritidis is among the most reported serotypes of Salmonella species worldwide, but is rarely reported as the causative agent of a liver abscess.
CASE REPORT: We present a patient with an abdominal blunt trauma. An initial abdominal computed tomography scan revealed a rupture of the right kidney and of the liver. Two days later, his physical state deteriorated and a new computed tomography scan was obtained. An extremely large 8-centimetre liver abscess was verified. Due to the unsatisfying response to antibiotic therapy and percutaneous drainage, we

This study compared the pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE), enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus-PCR (ERIC-PCR), multilocus variable-number of tanden-repeat analysis (MLVA), and multilocus sequence typing (MLST) methods for typing 188 Salmonella Enteritidis strains from different sources isolated over a 24-year period in Brazil. PFGE and ERIC-PCR were more efficient than MLVA for subtyping the strains. However, MLVA provided additional epidemiological information for those strains. In addition, MLST showed the Brazilian strains as belonging to the main clonal complex of S. Ente

We describe the further occurrence of Salmonella enteritidis producing an extended spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) and transferring cefotaxime, ceftazidime and aztreonam resistance. In a previous communication we describe the isolation of a strain of S. enteritidis (No. 35) from a septic neonate with high-level resistance to cefuroxime, cefotaxime, ceftazidime and aztreonam. Six weeks later, a second neonate was found, in the same Pediatric University Hospital, to be infected with apparently the same strain of S. enteritidis (No. 100) which was isolated from blood with similar properties as the

The first synthetic carbohydrate based potential anti-Salmonella Enteritidis vaccine has been developed by conjugating a synthetic tetrasaccharide antigen with bacteriophage Qβ. High levels of specific and long lasting anti-glycan IgG antibodies were induced by the conjugate, which completely protected mice from lethal bacterial challenges in a passive transfer model.

Salmonella Enteritidis is a major cause of foodborne gastroenteritis and is thus a persistent threat to global public health. The acid adaptation response helps Salmonella survive exposure to gastric environment during ingestion. In a previous study we highlighted the damage caused to cell membrane and the regulation of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) in S. Enteritidis. In this study, we applied both physiologic and iTRAQ analyses to explore the regulatory mechanism of acid resistance in Salmonella. It was found that after S. Enteritidis was subject to a 1 h period of acid adaptati

The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is responsible for more than 2 million new infections per year and opportunistic infections such as Salmonella spp. Gastroenteritis is an important cause of mortality and morbidity in developing countries. Monocytes and macrophages play a critical role in the innate immune response against bacterial infections. However during HIV infection the virus can infect these cells and although they are more resistant to the cytopathic effects, they represent an important viral reservoir in these patients. Our aim was to evaluate the monocyte functions from HIV-1 i

Myocarditis typically presents with non-specific clinical symptoms, and can easily be missed in the absence of a high index of clinical suspicion. Myocarditis caused by bacterial pathogens is rare in immunocompetent individuals, more commonly seen following viral infection. Although more classically associated with typhoid fever and gastroenteritis, Salmonella species are a rare cause of myocarditis. We report a case of Salmonella enteritidis-induced myocarditis after gastrointestinal infection in a 16 year-old girl, and discuss the diagnostic tools currently utilised to ascertain the diagnosi

This is a presentation of a case of mono microbial necrotising fasciitis due to the unusual organism Salmonella enteritidis. The patient presented with swelling and blistering of the right calf. There are only five other such cases reported in the literature. This was the only case that had positive blood cultures for the organism. Prompt and appropriate treatment was intuited but the patient died because of multi-organ failure.

Salmonella intracranial infections are unusual in adults, and particularly after neurosurgical procedures. We report a case of post-operative meningitis owing to Salmonella enteritidis. A 72-year-old man with type 2 diabetes was admitted to our unit for postoperative evaluation and management after neoplasic intracranial surgery. On the third day of admission, the patient developed infectious signs and diagnosis of postoperative meningitis was evoked. The cultivation of cerebrospinal fluid revealed Salmonella enteritidis which was also identified in several blood cultures. The treatment consis
