NtMYB78 enhances salt tolerance in tobacco by coordinating stress responsive transcription and lignin deposition.

Soil salinization is a major abiotic stress limiting plant growth and crop productivity. MYB transcription factors play central roles in plant stress responses. Here, we investigated NtMYB78 using overexpression (OE) and knockout (KO) lines. Expression analysis revealed that NtMYB78 is strongly induced by salt stress. Phenotypic evaluation revealed that OE lines exhibited enhanced germination, biomass accumulation, and survival under salinity, whereas KO lines were highly sensitive. Physiological analyses indicated that NtMYB78 mitigates membrane damage and reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumu

Seed-borne bacteria-mediated seedling microbiome assembly: genetic and metabolic mechanisms of salt tolerance.

Seed-borne bacteria (SbRB) are the initial colonizers of the seedling microbiome, yet their priority effects and community-shaping functions under salt stress have been underexplored. This review synthesizes recent advances in three interconnected areas: vertical transmission and genetic conservation of SbRB; ecological assembly mechanisms driven by priority effects, including niche preemption, environmental modification, and niche differentiation between rhizosphere and phyllosphere; and molecular pathways that confer salt tolerance, with a focus on the potential "pre‑adaptation" and "immune

ZmMYC7 negatively regulates salt tolerance in maize through ZmMAPK3-mediated phosphorylation-dependent proteasomal degradation.

Salt stress severely limits maize growth and productivity, yet the molecular mechanisms controlling transcription factor stability during salt stress remain poorly understood. Here, we identified ZmMYC7 as a negative regulator of maize salt tolerance and uncovered its post-translational regulation by ZmMAPK3. ZmMYC7 was rapidly induced by salt stress and localized to the nucleus. CRISPR/Cas9-mediated knockout of ZmMYC7 significantly enhanced salt tolerance, accompanied by reduced membrane damage, lower Na+ accumulation, higher K+ retention, and improved Na+/K+ homeostasis under saline conditio

Hydrogen sulfide and nitric oxide are involved in melatonin-induced salt tolerance in cucumber.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is a novel gaseous signaling molecule in response to adversity stress. Melatonin (MT) is a multifunctional molecule that plays an important role in regulating plant stress resistance. However, the interactions between H2S and MT are still unknown. Therefore, the role of H2S in MT-induced salt tolerance was elucidated in this study by measuring the antioxidant defense system and photosynthetic characteristics of cucumber. In addition, the crosstalk among H2S, NO, and mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) was investigated. Results showed that MT induced the production of

Temporal Transcriptomic and Metabolomic Reprogramming Unveils a Two-Phase Salt Tolerance Mechanism in Apocynum venetum.

Soil salinization poses a major constraint to global agriculture. Apocynum venetum, a salt-tolerant halophyte, provides an effective model for investigating salt-adaptive strategies; however, the temporal dynamics of its tolerance-associated genes and metabolites remain unclear. In this study, integrated transcriptomics, metabolomics (UHPLC-MS), physiological assays, and weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) were conducted to characterize early (7-day) and late (18-day) responses to 200 mM NaCl stress. NaCl stress significantly reduced chlorophyll content while increasing Na+ ac

Encapsulated ABA treatment fine-tunes hormone signalling and improves salt-stress tolerance in Arabidopsis thaliana.

Soil salinity is one of the most widespread environmental stresses affecting plant growth and agricultural productivity. Abscisic acid (ABA) is a key regulator of plant adaptation to salinity; however, the direct application of this phytohormone is constrained by its instability, rapid degradation under field conditions, and the growth-inhibitory effects associated with excessive hormone accumulation. Encapsulation technologies offer an alternative strategy to improve hormone stability and enable controlled delivery in plant systems. In this study, ABA was encapsulated in silica- and chitosan-

GSNOR mediates NO signaling to enhance salt tolerance in tobacco by regulating redox and photosynthesis.

High salt stress can hinder plant growth and development, thus reducing crop yield and quality. As an important signaling molecule, NO is involved in regulating various physiological and biochemical processes in plants. In this study, tobacco seedlings treated with 200 mmol/L NaCl exhibited leaf etiolation, sharp increases in superoxide anion (O2−) and peroxynitrite anion (ONOO−) contents, reduced activities of photosystem I (PSI) and II (PSII) reaction centers, and obstructed electron transfer. However, overexpression of the gene encoding the NO regulator nitrosoglutathione reductase (GSNOR)

Appraising diverse metrics of nitric oxide in salt stress tolerance of high yielding wheat genotypes.

Staple crop vulnerability has been escalating with significant approach due to climatic variations leading to persistent salt accumulation as inimical environmental stressors, and thus endangering food security. To address this global concern, there is a need to elucidate the growth, physiological and yield responses, entailing plant salt tolerance modifications. Recent years have been advocated with studies focusing on the integration of nitric oxide (NO), however there is a need of critical decipherment on NO synthesis is regulated under salt stress conditions. With this focus, the present i

Bacillus velezensis QA2 Potentially Induced Salt Stress Tolerance and Enhanced Phosphate Uptake in Quinoa Plants.

Plant Growth-Promoting Rhizobacteria (PGPR) have attracted much attention in agriculture biotechnology as biological inputs to sustain crop production. The present study describes a halotolerant phosphate solubilizing bacterium associated with quinoa plant roots. Based on a metabolic screening, one bacterial isolate, named QA2, was selected and screened for PGPR traits. This isolate solubilized both inorganic phosphate and zinc, produced indole-3-acetic acid, ammonia, hydrogen cyanide, cellulase, and (to be deleted) protease, and induced biofilm formation. We demonstrated that QA2 exhibited bo

Proteomic analysis on salicylic acid-induced salt tolerance in common wheat seedlings (Triticum aestivum L.).

The influence of salicylic acid (SA) on the salt tolerance mechanism in seedlings of common wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) was investigated using physiological measurements combined with global expression profiling (proteomics). In the present study, 0.5mM SA significantly reduced NaCl-induced growth inhibition in wheat seedlings, manifesting as increased fresh weights, dry weights, and photosynthetic pigments, but decreased lipid peroxidation. Two-week-old wheat seedlings treated with 0.5mM SA, 250 mM NaCl and 250 mM NaCl+0.5mM SA for 3 days were used for the proteomic analyses. In total, 39 pr

The APT1-NACsa3-GGP1 Module Enhances Salt Tolerance and Regulates Ascorbic Acid Biosynthesis in Medicago.

The unclear salt tolerance mechanism of alfalfa (Medicago sativa) is a major constraint to its molecular design breeding. Here, we identified a novel ATAF subfamily transcription factor, MtNACsa3, in the closely related diploid Medicago truncatula, and elucidated its function in salt tolerance. Phenotypic analysis of the MtNACsa3 mutants and overexpression lines showed its positive role in salt tolerance. Under salt or oxidative stress, MtNACsa3 relocates from the plasma membrane to the nucleus mediated by the de-S-acylation of Acyl-Protein Thioesterase 1 (MtAPT1). MtNACsa3 up-regulates the ex

Creation of new varieties of tetraploid willow (Salix suchowensis) and their evaluation for salt tolerance.

To break the germplasm bottleneck that constrains afforestation in coastal and inland saline alkali soils, this study focused on Salix spp., a fast growing, ecological tree genus, and aimed to establish a highly efficient, low chimera protocol for tetraploid willow induction through refined colchicine treatment. The overarching objective was to expand forest genetic diversity and provide both theoretical insights and elite plant materials for the development of salt-tolerant willow cultivars. The colchicine-based chromosome doubling procedure was systematically optimized; 0.1% (w/v) colchicine

Coordinated Dhurrin Turnover Is Associated with HCN Potential and Salt Tolerance During Sorghum Seed Germination.

Cyanogenic glycosides function as defense compounds and nitrogen reservoirs in sorghum, but their roles during seed germination under salt stress remain unclear. Here, two sorghum cultivars differing in salt tolerance were compared using physiological, biochemical, pharmacological and transcriptomic analyses to investigate the relationship between dhurrin metabolism and germination performance under salinity. Salt stress inhibited germination and early seedling growth in both cultivars, whereas the tolerant genotype SB19 maintained higher germination rates, earlier radicle emergence and strong

OsPLT1 negatively regulates salt tolerance by modulating ion homeostasis and oxidative stress responses in rice.

Soil salinity represents a major abiotic constraint that limits rice development and grain production. To investigate the role of OsPLT1 in rice salt tolerance, we analyzed mutants with disrupted gene function and overexpression lines under salt stress. Under non-stress conditions, seedling growth was largely comparable among the examined genotypes. Under salt treatment, however, the osplt1 mutants exhibited significantly enhanced tolerance, whereas OsPLT1-overexpressing lines showed increased sensitivity. Compared with wild-type Nipponbare (Nip), the mutants maintained better growth vigor, ac

ABC and MFS efflux transporters mediate antibiotic resistance and bile salt tolerance in Enterococcus faecalis.

Bacteria that reside in the gastrointestinal tract must adapt to the antibacterial properties of bile salts (BSs) and other compounds. We investigated five putative transporters of the enteric-colonizing Enterococcus faecalis for their roles in adaptation to BS and antibiotic resistance. Transcript levels of ef2593 and ef0575 increased over fivefold, and ef0420 increased 12-fold when exposed to 0.02% and 0.1% BS concentrations. No change in the expression of ef2592 or ef1814 was seen. E. faecalis wild-type MMH594 overexpressing efflux pumps by plasmid constructs (EF2592, EF2593, EF0575, EF0420

New insights into the salt tolerance of the extreme halophytic species Lycium humile (Lycieae, Solanaceae).

Knowledge about Solanaceae species naturally adapted to salinity is scarce, despite the fact that a considerable number of Solanaceae has been reported growing in saline environments. Lycium humile Phil. inhabits extreme saline soils in the Altiplano-Puna region (Central Andes, South America) and represents a promising experimental model to study salt tolerance in Solanaceae plants. Seeds, leaves and roots were collected from a saline environment (Salar del Diablo, Argentina). Seeds were scarified and 30 days after germination salt treatments were applied by adding NaCl salt pulses (up to 750

A review - Prescribing iron salts: Comparison of efficacy and tolerance of different iron complexes.

Iron is an essential element as it participates in a wide variety of metabolic processes, including oxygen transport, deoxyribonucleic acid synthesis and electron transport. However, as iron can form free radicals, its concentration in body tissues must be tightly regulated because, in excessive amounts, it can lead to tissue damage. Disorders of iron metabolism are among the most common diseases of humans with diverse clinical manifestations. Iron deficiency is the most common mineral deficiency, affecting approximately 20% of the population. Patients may present with an iron deficiency witho

Tolerability and Acceptability of an Exogenous Ketone Monoester and Ketone Monoester/Salt Formulation in Humans.

Exogenous ketone ester and ketone ester mixed with ketone free acid formulations are rapidly entering the commercial marketspace. Short-term animal and human studies using these products suggest significant potential for primary or secondary prevention of a number of chronic disease conditions. However, a number of questions need to be addressed by the field for optimal use in humans, including variable responses among available exogenous ketones at different dosages; frequency of dosing; and their tolerability, acceptability, and efficacy in long-term clinical trials. Salt-Tolerant Plants as Sources of Antiparasitic Agents for Human Use: A Comprehensive Review.

Parasitic diseases, especially those caused by protozoans and helminths, such as malaria, trypanosomiasis, leishmaniasis, Chagas disease, schistosomiasis, onchocerciasis, and lymphatic filariasis, are the cause of millions of morbidities and deaths every year, mainly in tropical regions. Nature has always provided valuable antiparasitic agents, and efforts targeting the identification of antiparasitic drugs from plants have mainly focused on glycophytes. However, salt-tolerant plants (halophytes) have lately attracted the interest of the scientific community due to their medicinal assets, whic
